I actually am at home at the moment with my baby. But i will be reaturning to work soon its soooo sad that i have had to go for a cleaning job instead of returing to my job in a nursery which i have done for 6 years and loved every min of it. Fully trainned and adore every second of nursery work but the sad fact is my wage is the lowest it could be and and being alone means i cannot afford to do it. I have had to take a cleaning job which pays double so that i can provide for my baby but i think it is sooo unfair :(

£30 a week!!

I don't really understand what a 'church creche' is, but clearly you are paying nowhere near the going rate for childcare, so it is being funded by some other source (the church I assume).

Most nurseries would be significantly more than this per day (which was why I couldnt afford nursery for my boys).

I think nursery staff are great, and would love them to earn a higher wage, but realistically, I cant see how it will happen, because parents can barely afford what they pay now. If nursery costs increase any more, surely parents would vote with their feet and more would use a nanny or cm, or even just cut their losses and stop working , all of which means less jobs for nursery workers in the first place. This would mean even more people willing to work in those jobs for low wages so would make the situation worse. Supply and demand.

Yes it is church funded like i said im very lucky there..
I know it will never change but i just wanted to hear what others thought that was all :)

Ishani maybe you would like to help with some of the IEPs I have spent the afternoon writing? Yes, that's right, writing in my own time despite the fact that when my time is paid for I don't earn that much more than the minimum wage?

If you spent a week doing my job I hope think you would stop spouting so much rubbish.

Ishani · 08/05/2011 17:36

Jemima I am sure you've been very busy, but it is requested by the parents, do we value it probably not tbh.

Bottleofbeer - do you really think that the managers are called in to cover for all loo breaks?

What happens when a staff member goes to sort out snack? lunch? tea?

What happens when a member of staff leaves the room to help change a child who has an accident, or if some one has been seen sick and you need to get the mop and bucket?

What if some one has to take a phone call?

i have had ofsted visit my nursery many times over the years and we have never been pulled up for these reasons, granted not all of them have happened over the years in front of ofsted but ones like snack and tea, and accidents, and lunch breaks have all happened, the manager or some free to cover hasn't always been around seeing as there are 5 rooms to attend to.

Well I rather that hope that the parents plus other professionals (SALT etc) that I work as part of a team with do actually value it.

If I didn't think that I was having a positive effect on people's lives then I wouldn't do the job. Thankfully, most parents that I deal with are less cynical than Ishani Grin

Cookie, somebody SHOULD be called in to cover, yes.

Ishani · 08/05/2011 19:34

I walked in and found the manager stood in the middle of the baby room, with a child in each arm and no less than 7 crawling around at her feet.
I'm sure the other staff members were around but at that moment the numbers were illegal and my faith in the nursery went out of the window.
Sadly in 10 years of using them on and off in 4 different county's I have concluded there are a handful of good ones with a handful of good staff.

Ishani

That is a shame to hear ive NEVER known anything like that to happen and if it did i would be one of the first to report it as its insane..
But in any job their are places and staff that are rubbish and brake the rules its not nice to polish all nursery staff like it though because i know it is not the case in my old one ..
:)
