To be fed up to the back teeth with CUPCAKES

Stupid, pathetic, too-sweet, overrated, overpriced fucking CUPCAKES.

They're everywhere. Apparently "whoopee pies" were supposed to overtake them, but that hasn't happened.

Why is a "cupcake business" the activity of choice for women these days? And why do said businesses always have such twee names?

Jenny Colgan's new book is even devoted to the blighters.

Probably been done to death already, but I needed to vent.

YANBU I have a massive sweet tooth, but cannot stand the sickly taste of cupcakes. I'd much rather have a homemade victoria sponge any day. Hope this fad is over soon, it's parallel in my opinion to pointless cardmaking.

theghostofposhlymanor · 06/05/2011 10:22

YANBU I hate cupcakes and everything they symbolise.

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 06/05/2011 10:23

I have a very sweet tooth but they are not only tasteless they are hard to eat - sparkly frosting on the nose is not a good look!

ebb - don't get me started on buying pre cut, pre drawn pictures and words and buying blank cards and sticking them altogether Hmm What is the point? Only your friends will buy them....and only because they feel forced to.

Buffoonery · 06/05/2011 10:23

"And now every other person i know is making cupcakes or is starting a business selling "shabby chic" decor for the home. If they aren't doing one of those ther are crocheting or decorating wooden bloody letters. Its starting to get right on my tits."

Glad it's not just me, my friends have all started doing this, I keep getting told to 'like' their pages on FB, all ridiculously named, all pretty much identical to each other, tis dull.

electra · 06/05/2011 10:24

It's a fad though isn't it - I'm sure it will be replaced! But no, yanbu - we have a cup cake shop even in my backwater town.

jeckadeck · 06/05/2011 10:26

I actually like cupcakes but what I find highly irritating is the kind of people who start their own cupcake businesses. Its usually the wives of hedge fund types or people with family money who, having dabbled at working in the meeja or something for a bit, decide to try at being an ersatz kept woman once they've had kids. Its an exercise in proving how you can do a good imitation of being a 50s housewife and still have your tongue in your cheek. Nauseating.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 06/05/2011 10:30

All dem haters would be singing a different tune if you'd tried the chocolate jack daniels one that I had at roller derby a few months ago. It was amazing. Plus it came with a little fizzy cola bottle on the top.
Grin

ZillahWhoDrankTooMuchGin · 06/05/2011 10:35

these are also everywhere at the mo - i've been offered a set with my name on by three different friends (for money obv)...

Asinine · 06/05/2011 10:36

I've just made chocolate chip fairy cakes for my son's birthday party

They are not cupcakes Grin honestly

But I've just tested the largest one and they're delicious

I agree that people who ponce about with cupcakes businesses are a touch irritating, but making them in your own home is OK

Must go, the scones are about to burn

Hullygully · 06/05/2011 10:36

Thought you meant Buppy.

Isn't cupcake American for fairy cake?

A bun is bready not cakey. An iced bun is bready with icing on top.

AttillaTheMum · 06/05/2011 10:45

I ate three Hmm on the day of the royal wedding. I started to feel a bit ill and threw up. It was blue... and had sparkles

mamalovebird · 06/05/2011 10:46

I really hope they're not past it as I'm getting married four weeks TODAY and am having them as the dessert for the buffet.
I have been charged the very reasonable price (imo) of £1.60 per cake. Much cheaper than even a shop bought 'wedding' cake from the research I've done.

Chulita · 06/05/2011 10:46

Yabu, I love making cupcakes/fairy cakes/mini sponge cakes with icing on top. I don't buy them but I really enjoy making and icing them, people don't complain about eating them either.
I agree that the cupcake naffery that comes with this trend is a bit ott. It's a cake to be eaten, I don't want to buy DD a t-shirt with 'mummy's little cupcake' on it Hmm
zillah we used to make those in school for each other and we didn't charge for them.

ScousyFogarty · 06/05/2011 10:48

I keep reading about cupckes. How come they are thought to be special?
I liked ECCLES but I have to watch my weight now.

I got a twinge this morning. I need a pretty nurse or a pretty doctor. pretty soon. ....I took a shot and should be ok. Post right on til the end of the road. ( I know a song about that.)

CUPCAKES? do give over. Is it american?

WhenWillISeeYouAgain · 06/05/2011 10:50

YABU. I love cupcakes and, luckily, we have two very good outlets near me.

The prettier and sparklier, the better Grin

instantfamily · 06/05/2011 10:55

what is the difference between a cup cake and a fairy cake? they both look like they are made more for the eye than the palate.

bupcakesandcunting · 06/05/2011 10:56

"Thought you meant Buppy."

Ha ha, so did I. I was ready to come on this thread, sleeves virtually rolled-up, jacket handed to one of you lot, ready for a bitch fight.

Imagine the disappointment.

Hullygully · 06/05/2011 10:58

Cunt

LittleMissFluffBrain · 06/05/2011 11:07

What the bleedin hell is a whoopie pie?! Oh and cupcakes, don't get me started on them. They're BUNS. Or fairy cakes. Calling them cupcakes isn't going to make you suddenly trendy/posh Grin

BibiBelle · 06/05/2011 11:11

I'm a home baker but all everyone wants at the minute is cupcakes. I, however, do not have a business with a twee name AND making cupcakes doesn't say that much about me Angry

I am a mother of 3, hold down a permanent job, run my own business AND make cupcakes.

good grief.

and SpringHeeledJack many of my repeat customers are coeliac.

BibiBelle · 06/05/2011 11:12

oh and I refuse to call mine cupcakes. They're called Mavis Cakes as they're fat fairy cakes Grin

KvetaBarry · 06/05/2011 11:15

I like making cupcakes, they're fun. Great to experiment with flavours too. so YABU. Buying the buggers though - not for me.

BibiBelle · 06/05/2011 11:16

however it was my birthday 2 days ago and EVERYTHING was sodding cupcake themed - desperately trying not to be ungrateful Grin
