To be fed up to the back teeth with CUPCAKES

Stupid, pathetic, too-sweet, overrated, overpriced fucking CUPCAKES.

They're everywhere. Apparently "whoopee pies" were supposed to overtake them, but that hasn't happened.

Why is a "cupcake business" the activity of choice for women these days? And why do said businesses always have such twee names?

Jenny Colgan's new book is even devoted to the blighters.

Probably been done to death already, but I needed to vent.

I like them, the price makes me sick though!

working9while5 · 06/05/2011 22:27

Oooh, if you used nice crusty bread with an airy texture that might just be a winner! Not one for the shivering-dog-in-handbag brigade, mind

Goofymum · 06/05/2011 22:47

I find it funny and that a) so many people get worked up over a little cupcake and b) quite a few people were discussing it before 7am this morning.

Suncottage · 06/05/2011 22:53

working9

Consider it done. You are welcome at mine anytime.

Thumps working on the arm and hands her a cup of 'builders tea'

YANBU.

I effing hate cupcakes. Pretentious. I see so many blogs with cupcakes on a vintage cake stand; on a Cath Kidston oilcloth with bunting in the background. TWEE. Grow up FFS.

sumum · 07/05/2011 09:15

YABU - I love making cupcakes and celebration cakes for friends and family, it is my hobby and very enjoyable.

IWantAnotherBaby · 07/05/2011 10:02

YABU. What on earth is wrong with them? Decently made ones with good quality ingredients etc are just like a slice of any number of delicious 'big' cakes.

I don't run any kind of business, but I do make 100s of cupcakes for my son's school fairs etc through the year (I've just been asked to make 100 owl-themed ones for the summer fayre next weekend); they are a bit of fun for the children, I only use the best quality stuff, and they go down very well. Also when he has a school topic that lends itself, I sometimes send in a tray of themed cakes for his classmates (Fire of London, ocean theme, Greeks...)

As far as I'm concerned they're great for children's parties, and more practical (and fun) for fetes etc than large cakes which need cutting up.

MUMoo7 · 07/05/2011 12:21

We quite like making cupcakes every now and then - the children can get involved since they are easy to make plus they realise how much butter and sugar goes into cakes!

pickyourbrain · 07/05/2011 13:01

Whats this 'bun' business? Doesnt that mean bread?

chillistars · 07/05/2011 16:04

Where is a bun a bread roll? I've heard bread rolls called tea cakes in some parts "up north" but in other northern parts a tea cake has currants in it and isn't a bread roll at all

pickyourbrain · 07/05/2011 16:20

A tea cake is a choclate cover biscuit with marshmallow! A bun is a bread roll. In Leeds anyway. Though I'm somerset born and its the same there Confused

chillistars · 07/05/2011 16:37

how odd, only 15 miles from Leeds and a bun is, well, a cup cake.

chillistars · 07/05/2011 16:38

here a bread roll is a bread roll and a bun is a cake.

Greige · 07/05/2011 16:43

Up North (the real north just below Scotland) buns are bread rolls, tea cakes are large, sweet, bread rolls with dried fruit that are split and toasted and slathered in butter. Yum.

Cupcakes are sickly monstrosities, my dd eats the icing and leaves the cake, then moans about feeling sick for the rest of the day but she'll happily eat a whole batch of fairy cakes.

FellatioNelson · 07/05/2011 19:42

Home made cupcakes OR FAIRY CAKES AS WE LIKE TO CALL THEM IN THIS COUNTRY can be delicious, but shop bought cupcakes are crapola. Dry synthetic tasting sponge and sickly sweet yet flavourless, artificial tasting buttercream and gaudy colours. Yuk.

SoFluffyImGonnaDie · 07/05/2011 19:49

I am halfway between Leeds and Manchester and a bun is cupcake to me too. I would call a bread roll a teacake and the currant variety a currant teacake. Either way none of them should be piled 6 inches high with buttercream

Jossiejump · 07/05/2011 20:00

I admit it - I make cupcakes for a living, having given up a "professional" job! It means I can look after my 3 DSs, then bake when they are in bed, rather than having to put them in childcare.
I'm not twee, rather more tomboyish!
I make them with different icings.
I charge what I charge because people are happy with the price.
My cakes are nice!
And I'm fed up with people decrying me and others like me who are setting up a business that they can do around their family.

Jossiejump · 07/05/2011 20:02

Oh and by the way, I'm not middle class with hedge funds etc, just working class trying to make ends meet without relying on others/the state to support me!

FellatioNelson · 07/05/2011 20:03

They are not the same thing though SoFluffy. Aren't teacakes and buns made with a dough containing yeast? Whereas cupcakes (or any kind of cakes) are made with a yeast-free egg batter.

GoingLoopyLou · 07/05/2011 20:14

Good for you JossieJump. I have a business similar to yours and most of Mumsnet have made me feel embarrassed and inferior to admit to it!

weimy · 07/05/2011 20:18

yep, teacakes have currents in them, buns are like bread rolls/baps (but you can get sweet buns that have icing on them too), and both are totally different to cupcakes.

cosmicdiva · 07/05/2011 20:34

The difference I can between cupcakes and good old fashioned cake is the shape. And a wedge shape is so much easier to eat, isn't it?

Jossiejump · 07/05/2011 20:38

But they're a good idea for people like me that have a few friends over for my boys for their birthdays, then the grandparents, uncles etc later. Birthday boy blows out the candles on big cake, the friends each take home a cupcake decorated in a similar style, the "main" cake is still there for the whole candle blowing again and then eating with the family.

SoFluffyImGonnaDie · 07/05/2011 21:52

I love those bready fingers with the the white icing on the top they are much nicer than cupcakes.

foxybrownlove · 07/05/2011 22:05

Facebook is the worse for people displaying their 'creations', I dread logging on at the weekend to see the latest sugary batch...although I must admit they do taste yummy so I'm not yet a hater!
