To want smoking banned in public playgrounds

onadietcokebreak · 28/04/2011 19:04

why should I remove my child because a smoker ( two in my case today) thinks it's okay to smoke in a small enclosed playground.

Can't they wait til their children have finished? Bloody selfish in my opinion ( as a ex smoker)

Thank you sir scientist for coming here to address the trash that people are actively discussing as part of a lively debate on a forum created for conversation, targetted at a wide range of people with different perspectives on many different topics.

I'm sure everyone has woken up now and decided they are no longer entitled to their rubbish opinions as the Speaker of All Things True has spoken.

I understand what you are saying worra, but I actually think that in itself is part of the 'dying out' process?

For instance, when I was a kid, nearly everyone smoked. Indoors. And the ones that didn't kept an ashtray under the sink for visitors. I don't think there's one photo of me as a child that doesn't contain at least one adult with a cig, one ashtray balanced on an armchair, or a fug of smoke under the ceiling (I'm including the school ones!)

Now people are freaking about the smell,or vapours. A good thing on the whole

amberleaf · 29/04/2011 08:49

Second hand smoking is more damaging than smoking.

HA HA HA! really ?

All you non smokers had better start smoking then eh?

Thats utter shite.......any facts to back that claim up LDNmummy

LadyWithNoManors · 29/04/2011 09:20

Right here's what we could do, bad smoking in all public places ie parks, outside buildings. People would then only be able to smoke in their own houses, or if they have children in their own gardens or on their own doorsteps. The weak willed feckers would have to give up then wouldn't they.Either that or never go out again. And then no one else would have to put up with their smelly toxic fumes wafting everywhere.

microfight · 29/04/2011 09:42

YABU
It's an open space FGS! I don't smoke but really get a grip!

onagar · 29/04/2011 10:36

MmaIvvy, you were trying to look at it sensibly, but I was pointing out that this is not what an anti-smoker wants. The whole point is about putting down and controlling other people.

You get the same thing with bf/ff, with the anti-nestle bunch and so on. This is what MN is known for. It's why there are so many sites with links to MN and quotes like "ha! look what their are saying today!" MN brings entertainment to many thousands.

I said that your reasonable sounding point about not parking in the playground was meaningless since drivers do that on the roads and crossings without seeing anything wrong with it. Really I don't blame you for driving, but was using the whole driving thing to illustrate how anti-smokers latch onto one point and ignore all others. An anti-smoker will dismiss the car fumes danger because they are out to hate smokers and that's what they are going to do!.

I mean look at "Second hand smoking is more damaging than smoking.". How could any adult say that without seeing the obvious flaw? The answer is sometimes a lack of education. The kind of person who thinks TV works by having little people inside. Mostly though it's self delusion by people who have picked a target to hate and will damn will find an excuse to do so.

ConfessionsOfAnAchingFanjo · 29/04/2011 10:44

YANBU. It's f*cking revolting and even in a large area the smoke carries in the breeze so kids (and me) 10 metres away, still cop it.

I also think it should be banned at the bus station/stops and in the local predestian area in the town where I live. My DC should not have to dodge lit fags at his face level because dickheads smokers hold them down around their waist so the smoke doesn't waft in their own face.

For those saying the smell (regardless of health concerns) is reasons to hate smokers I have a question. Do you own a dog?

There's nothing quite like the smell of wet dog shit in the morning!.

LadyWithNoManors · 29/04/2011 11:13

No I haven't got a dog, they stink too I agree.

amberleaf · 29/04/2011 11:37

Christ, theres little worse than getting a breath of second hand cigarette smoke in a public place. If you're a smoker, you have no idea how bad it is. Its far worse than a bad smell. I was hospitalised with pneumonia this winter and took a long time to recover and I'm also asthmatic. When I was recovering, I used to go for a very short walk and if I'd got a few breaths of cigarette smoke it would probably have ended me back in hospital.

Its the way smokers stand just outside a doorway, so everyone has to go past them, because the lazy fekkers can't be bothered to walk a bit further away where they won't be in the way posoning everyone's air intake with their poision sticks. I'm sure they wouldn't have liked it if I'd coughed pneumonia bugs all over them.

BitOfFunPipPip · 29/04/2011 13:50

What are the teenagers hogging the swings meant to do instead? Confused

For those who are saying my point is a load of shite, there has been research into it. The problem is that the research is fairly new. Did you know there is even such a thing as 'Third Hand Smoke'? And yes, there is new research going on into that too.

This is a quote from one of the scientists researching Third Hand Smoking that I think is relevant considering the talk about car fumes. "The level of toxicity in cigarette smoke is just astronomical when compared to other environmental toxins [such as particles found in automobile exhaust],"

You can read the whole article in Scientific American here: www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=what-is-third-hand-smoke

And besides, even if it is not more harmful than smoking, it is equally as bad. People just want to live in an ignorance is bliss state so they can justify their selfish habit to others who feel it is unfair to have their health damaged.

I will come back to this later. There is more on Third Hand Smoke and the true debtremental impact of Second Hand Smoke all over the internet from reputable sites including the NHS and American websites listing the findings of the Surgeon Generals reports.

LDNmummy · 29/04/2011 15:32

Oh and I have smoked before, and I eat McDonalds, I am not a holier than thou type person.

SilveryMoon · 29/04/2011 15:36

I think smoking by the swings or whilst standing at the bottom of the slide is out of order.
Sitting on a bench is fine. Unless there is a baby in a buggy very close, at which point I would move.
I tend to go and stand by the gate/fence, but still inside the park.
Really can't see a problem with it tbh

LDNmummy · 29/04/2011 15:37

Oh and I don't own a dog and agree that wet dog shit smell is pretty foul and owners should clean up the mess.

However... wet dog shit smell is not going to harm my health.

And if you check out the Third Hand Smoking research, you will see that that lingering scent of cigarette is actually a load of toxins that is harmful to a certain degree.

LDNmummy · 29/04/2011 15:45

Sorry to keep posting in parts BTW, getting ready to go somewhere but kinda got sucked into this Blush

"Secondhand smoke is also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or passive smoke. It is a mixture of 2 forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco: sidestream smoke (smoke that comes from the end of a lighted cigarette, pipe, or cigar) and mainstream smoke (smoke that is exhaled by a smoker). Even though we think of these as the same, they aren't. The sidestream smoke has higher concentrations of cancer-causing agents (carcinogens) than the mainstream smoke. And, it contains smaller particles than mainstream smoke, which make their way into the body's cells more easily."

This is a passage taken from www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/tobaccocancer/secondhand-smoke

It explains why second hand smoke is more toxic than direct smoke from a cigarette.

TheVisitor · 29/04/2011 15:49

I was a hardened smoker for 26 years till last year, and I've always hated smoking in CHILDREN'S play areas. Smoking fucking stinks. It mings. It's actually rude and inconsiderate to smoke in the CHILDREN'S area. Go and smoke a little way away, you can still see your child, or better still, wait until you've left. It's no biggie for you to do this. I don't understand why people are getting so defensive about others not wanting cigarettes in a play area. You will survive an hour without a fag.

what complete and load of rubbish you lot get so wound up about...I only joined this site to address such trash...this is a typical example as a scientist I can tell you that the most toxic things in the atmosphere are dioxins and every year you get your kids to surround the bonfire which is the biggest output of dioxins ...time you all woke up

Haven't you got better things to do with your life than trawl a site you despise looking for inaccuracies to get your knickers in a twist about?

ragged · 29/04/2011 16:13

yabu, because I'm fed up with everything having to be legislated.

The reasonable people will stop or move away if you ask.

The unreasonable people will ignore the so called local signed rules, anyway AND there won't ever be anybody around from the Council/Police to tell them not to.

LDNmummy · 29/04/2011 16:21

But Kungfu that is ONCE a year, and personally I wouldn't crowd my kids around a bonfire. I was in primary school with a boy who accidentally got set alight on bonfire night and was scarred head to toe (very sad).

And, that is someones choice to expose themself to those toxins, many smokers take that choice away from the individual everyday, which is a pivotal point.

onagar · 29/04/2011 16:31

Its the way smokers stand just outside a doorway Anti-smokers demanded a law that we had to go and stand outside and now whine that we are outside.

Poetic justice - Be careful what you wish for. :)

LDNmummy, I'm not going to explain why being near a smoker can't be worse than being the smoker. You just carry right on saying it.

However... wet dog shit smell is not going to harm my health. Toxocariasis is picked up from dog shit (often by children) and can make them go blind.

The emissions from car exhausts are responsible for more deaths than road accidents, according to World Health Organisation (WHO) research. That was the first google hit from a car fumes search and is a bit old, but for balance includes a GP saying "yeah, but smoking kills too"

That's not to say that you can't be concerned about two or even three dangers. Just that if someone is going to be join a mob of smoker-haters they probably want to be sure they are not guilty of worse (or guilty of ignoring worse) or it might make them seem hypocritical.

LookToWindward · 29/04/2011 16:35

"And if you check out the Third Hand Smoking research, you will see that that lingering scent of cigarette is actually a load of toxins that is harmful to a certain degree."

Absolute complete horseshit.

Regards so called "third hand smoke" there is a single study (referenced in the SciAm link) that that author himself admits has conclusions that aren't supported and are little more than speculation.

There is zero credible evidence that "third hand smoke" presents any kind of credible risk to anyone.

I say this as a non smoker.
