To want smoking banned in public playgrounds

onadietcokebreak · 28/04/2011 19:04

why should I remove my child because a smoker ( two in my case today) thinks it's okay to smoke in a small enclosed playground.

Can't they wait til their children have finished? Bloody selfish in my opinion ( as a ex smoker)

wow Surbophobe, the tobacco companies' marketing machines have really worked on you. It's all there in your post; - the idea that smoking is a slightly risque, rebellious, naughty thing to do, the completely absurd concept that boredom can be relieved by stuffing a burning stick of poison into your mouth. It's really fascinating to read. You're addicted to a drug that will impoverish and more likely than not will kill you. It's depressing to think our children will get sucked into it all too.

zookeeper · 28/04/2011 20:08

oo count you in on that too Moondog Grin

worraliberty · 28/04/2011 20:08

On a still day like today my child was exposed. It didn't blow away. The daft bint was blowing it away from her children into my child

See now I said YANBU because of the risk of being burnt.

The whole 'my child was exposed' thing briefly in the open air, makes you sound like just another hysterical anti smoker.

Your child was also 'exposed' to pollen, germs, carbon etc.....

catnao · 28/04/2011 20:13

Am I OK, zookeeper? Only, I don't smoke actually IN the class room, or offer "my" kids a fag (they're very expensive, you see Wink) But I live in the village where I work, and if I choose to smoke on my property, and the kids at school see me - that's life - they don't call me "catnao" at school and neither do I try and teach them when they're round my house for play dates.

Luckily. most people, and I love living here, and have a lovely social life, have the ability to separate work from social life. The parent who complained about me tried to start a petition! Ha!

catnao · 28/04/2011 20:15

3 signatures, including her husband and mum don't a convincing protest make. Smile

Francagoestohollywood · 28/04/2011 20:16

catnao, that's Shock

ilovepancakes · 28/04/2011 20:16

I think we can tell which ones are smokers and which ones are not Grin

catnao · 28/04/2011 20:17

Yeah - the smokers have horns, and want to kill innocent babies Wink

PiousPrat · 28/04/2011 20:19

That is perfectly reasonable though Catnao. Think of all the money we pay in taxes to support those babies throughout their lives. Now think of all the lovely Lamberts we could buy for that... Wink

olibeansmummy · 28/04/2011 20:22

YANBU I hate smoking around my ds!

catnao · 28/04/2011 20:23

Oh good point - let's all go and smoke "all over them in the otherwise fresh and lovely air", and continue to purposely lean over prams in enclosed spaces to make sure the job's a good 'un!

topsi · 28/04/2011 20:23

YANBU I think it should be banned in all public areas. Keep it in your own home with the doors and windows shut where it belongs.

usualsuspect · 28/04/2011 20:31

[fag]

Salmotrutta · 28/04/2011 20:32

Salmotrutta · 28/04/2011 20:35

squeakytoy · 28/04/2011 20:40

eeeeeh I remember the days when the staff room at school had a fog of smoke coming out of it, and the teacher on duty in the playground would be having a ciggie....

I remember the days when my dad took us all to the park, in his van (we sat on tires in the back), and pufed away on his untipped cigs.. we all survived and grew up...

I remember the days when people just go on with their own lives and didnt spend half their day trying to think of things to be offended by and complain about too...

Salmotrutta · 28/04/2011 20:40

[puffs on a Marlboro Light]

Sassybeast · 28/04/2011 20:44

Blimey - we got to 4 pages before someone played the 'NHS will collapse if all the fag heads give up' line.

YANBU OP - counting the days til fags are banned full stop in public.

cricketballs · 28/04/2011 20:46

Sassy - are yo uclaiming that the line is untrue?

MmaIvvy · 28/04/2011 20:49

People doing things in the past is not an excuse for doing it now - we have more knowledge about the dangers of smoking than people did then and people HAVE died from regular exposure to second hand smoke. And NO, I'm not saying that op's incident is the same as that BUT it doesn't make sense to defend smoking in front of kids as ok just beacuse SOME people grew up with it and are ok.

Salmotrutta · 28/04/2011 20:49

What do you deem to be "public" then?

And for what it's worth I don't often smoke out and about except maybe outside in a pub garden or street cafe and I stay away from others, especially children, but I reckon we smokers have been marginalised enough. But we had the ban up here before it happened in England so we've gotten used to being lepers.
