to be pissed off at school revelations?

Have name changed for this as the route in which I found out this info makes me very identifiable.

I always have my friend's DD on Teacher training days as she has to work at the school the DC attend.

My 2DC are off school today and tomorrow as the school decided to manipulate TT days so that the school broke up on 8th April(1.30pm) and return 3rd May. It means the school will be open on Polling Day (with extra safeguarding in place Hmm) and we will not finish one day early in July as we normally do.

That's fine, but obviously 3 weeks and a day and a half makes life very difficult for WOHPs.

After speaking to my friend last night, it was revealed that the staff are not going into school on these 2 days as have worked/will work extra hours after school to make up the time.

Shock

Apparently, attendance at afterschool events will count towards this time, rather than actual training. Is this acceptable standrd practice?

AIBU to be pissed off about this?

It's 1265 directed hours plus whatever it takes to actually get the job done. If you tot up all the hours a teacher actually does it would come to a darn site more than 32 hours a week.

tethers you were right, this is amusing.

katz · 28/04/2011 15:17

because pickyourbrain children only need to be in school for 190 days of the year - so regardless of what the teacher is doing for 175 days children aren't at school.

NinkyNonker · 28/04/2011 15:18

You and I have very different interpretations of on a roll I think MoreBeta, you haven't yet won a point, let alone proved one!

GetOutMyPub · 28/04/2011 15:18

The school where I work did a similar thing a few years ago, so that we broke up for the summer earlier. We had to do a minimum of 16 hrs twilight training to make up for the two days closure.

However, the part of your post that concerns me is that your children's school is going to open on polling day!

In addition to the directed time teachers have to complete, every school is also given an "Occasional Day" Which legally is to be used to close the school for polling in the first instance, then it can be used for any reason deemed appropriate by the school. Some church schools might close on their "saints day" or a school might close for some other religious festival - like Ramadam depending on the school community, most just lump it on to another break.

So it is obvious to me, that they have used the optional day to remain closed this week.

No, I certainly don't pay my own wages taxes.

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:19

pickyourbrain I was referring to parents who are tax payers

and unfortunately I can't have a cuppa and a sandwich at my desk ...

pickyourbrain · 28/04/2011 15:20

Of course they pay tax frosty, that wasnt my point.

mrz - whwere do you teach that you do 5 evening every week and no days off? I have 3 teacher friends and their always bugging me to leave work early to have fun with them.

OK I admit sometimes I have a bottle of water while teaching [shame}

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:21

and sometime i even pee during school hours

TeamLemon · 28/04/2011 15:21

mrz! Shock!
Water! Really?!?

NinkyNonker · 28/04/2011 15:22

Me too. Even the odd glucose tablet when sugar levels dipped during late pregnancy. I was even 2 minutes late to a class once as I needed a wee for the millionth time that day. I am so, so sorry.

How I missed my cushy office back then.

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:23

I work in a bog standard primary school and work with children 3 nights after school and 3 mornings before school and attend 2 staff meetings

MoreBeta · 28/04/2011 15:23

I still want to know why teachers are on this thread and not working?

TeamLemon · 28/04/2011 15:23

I never get the chance to pee during schools hours. Far to busy to urinate, plus the fact there are 15 women in our school and only one toilet. There is one male member of staff and he gets a bog all to himself...

pickyourbrain · 28/04/2011 15:24

mrz, seriously i am intrigued about your job. I have been in to my dds school on many occassions at the end of the school day and the teachers are sat in the staff room with tea and biscuits.. fair enough. But they couldnt say they don't get a break for a sandwich and a cuppa...?

frosty it all needs to go up. 195 days takes the piss.

TeamLemon · 28/04/2011 15:24

Ah! You went to a boarding school. I think we are coming to the crux of the issue...

TeamLemon · 28/04/2011 15:26

pickyourbrain, the staff probably retreat to the staff room for a cuppa at the end of the day to take 10mins R&R before plodding on with the marking, assessment and planning that will ensure they don't get home before 6.30pm

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:26

We could ask you the same question MoreBeta. In my case I'm shirking my responsibilities because it is the holidays and I've just got home from hospital.

katz · 28/04/2011 15:27

i'm not a teacher but have been married to one for 12 years and can see how bloody hard he and his colleagues work.

I'm amazed at the attitudes of some on this thread, these people you are deriding, who you seem to hold in total disregard and have zero respect for as professionals are responsible for educating and guiding your children. If you have such a low opinion of them then why don't you a. home educate or b. go into teaching yourself.

pickyourbrain · 28/04/2011 15:27

And I speak as someone who's mum was a teacher and aunt, and my sister is training and my best friend as well and 2 close friends.
Its a running joke that they facebook me at 4pm about how nice the weather is. I actually couldnt bear teaching so don't envy them and it's all in good humour but the fact is, 170 days off a year means you are only at work 25 days more than you are not...

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:27

I should add I'm sat at my desk drinking a cuppa and eating a sandwich just to see how it feels.

Feenie · 28/04/2011 15:28

Hope you are okay, mrz, and enjoying your holidays Smile

mrz · 28/04/2011 15:28

170 days we don't get paid for too Sad

pickyourbrain · 28/04/2011 15:28

6.30pm isnt late though is it?

It's not disrespect for the teachers, it's disrespect for the system. I'm not expecting them to argue!
