To be peeved off I've discovered CMs DH smokes in the home

DS1 has been going for 2 years and DS2 just started. I smelt something this morning, that smelt like stale smoke and asked her if anyone in house smokes.

She said her DH does, but not in front of kids , evenings and weekends.

To be honest, I have always just dropped DSs off at door. My DH said he has sometimes smelt it, but I always thought he was imagining it.

I'm looking for another CM. I feel peeved off, at myself mostly, for not asking. I guess if someone smokes in a home and uses it for childminding, that they would tell prospective parents?

Is this allowed? Is her home not considered a type of workplace as she is earning money whilst childminding? I may be talking shit clutching at straws but I would be surprised if the smoking ban doesn't cover this type of scenario. Before I get flamed by smokers, I didn't support the smoking ban despite being a non-smoker.

So long as he doesn't smoke while there are any children there then I don't see the problem?

Does "not in front of the kids" mean "outside" or "in another room"?

If he's only smoking in their own time outside of CMing hours then really, what is the issue?

I hate smoking but it wouldnt occur to me to be bothered about this as long as he's not smoking in the house with the dc there.

Thanks all for posting. She told me that her DH smokes in evenings / weekends in the house, but not when the mindees are there. I wish I'd asked at the beginning. Thankfully she does spend most of the time in the garden with the kids, but hate the thought of third hand smoke. Anyway, I need to find another CM sharpish, as I'm not happy about it. Guess everyone has different attitudes towards it.

Thanks all for posting. My last post wasn't flippant. DS2 just waking up, so wanted to quickly post. Personally I don't feel comfortable with DS2 crawling around in a smokers home. Dread the hassle now of finding a new one.

You're going to move your children from childcare they've been in for two years because of the occasional smell of smoke from someone smoking before they got there?

My ds's keyworker smokes Maybe I should see if I can get her fired.

Well if you´ve never smelt it on your child, that´s a good thing.

But maybe that´s because they are outside!

If he smokes every evening & weekend in the house, I can´t see how it doesn´t smell tbh.

How did you not notice when you looked around?

It would also put me off using them.

I've smelt joss sticks and air freshener, but not smoke.

Rita - it wouldn't bother me if DS1 nursery key worker smoked at all. But this is actually smoking in the home that they spend all day in. It leaves residue and carcinogens on fabrics, carpets etc etc. Granted it's probably minimal, but it does bother me.

Moving your child is going to cause psychologial trauma. I guess the smoking is more important to you than your childs mental wellbeing.

Fabby - DS1 has actually just started at nursery and stopping at CMs next week anyway.

DS2 has been going since February this year.

I question that switching DS2 to another CM is going to cause 'psychological trauma' (you do not know enough about DS2 relationship with CM to make that judgement, he isn't yet particularly close and tbh gets on with all adults he meets). And yes, I do take my kids health quite seriously. And their mental wellbeing is fine, thank you very much.

I would be annoyed too OP. Surely, he should be smoking outside and not in the house.

I must say it would be better if he only smoked outside, and I say this as a smoker! but I think you are silly to move them TBH, think harm will be greater from transtion TBH

Im surprised it isnt illegal to smoke in the home considering its a workplace. Taxi drivers arent allowed to smoke in their cars, even when alone or out with the family.

There is absolutely no conclusive proof whatsoever that "third hand smoke" poses any danger, and you will not find a single study that can prove any evidence either. THere are plenty of "perhaps" and "maybe", but thats about it. If someone was offered a funding to do a study on "fourth hand smoke" they could probably come up with something for people to get in a panic about too.

There is more danger from air fresheners, chemical fumes from cleaning products, and plenty of other aromas that are in the air.

Are you going to stop your child going to school in the future, in case the teachers are smokers who have a cigarette on their way to school or in their lunch hour?

Id actually have misgivings about anyone who stilled smoked indoors at all in this day and age. Most people tend to go outside dont they?

I would move them too - but I have a nose like a bloodhound and would have smelt it long ago if it had been happening!
