To wonder why MN's so concerned with class

Is it envy, is that what it boils down to pure envy of someone else and they might be doing better.

Even the cycling threads end up with class being brought into the mix.

Why is class brought into so many thread - even this one!

But she had the legs of a lurcher or summat. You don't need to read if you have the legs of a lurcher.

AlpinePony · 17/04/2011 20:42

Dappled and hairy? Confused

alistron1 · 17/04/2011 20:51

Hang on, she quivered like a lurcher and had the legs of some other animal. And a cloud of hair.

I want all of the above, and an RCB. And to eat chips and gravy.

Watertight · 17/04/2011 21:20

"I want all of the above, and an RCB. And to eat chips and gravy."

alistron1, actually this sums things up quite poetically!

We're all a jumbled-up mixture, aren't we. How many of us can say they are 100% WC or MC? We're all a fusion of where our parents came from, how things were in our childhood, how our own lives have developed, the aspirations we have for ourselves and our children.

I'm quite comfortable to be neither one nor the other really but to have elements of both. I'm not political about it - I've got working class roots but these days have many of the trappings of middle-class life. I'm quite happy to have a foot in both camps. Isn't this most people, now? Some, I am sure, can say they are wholly one thing or the other but I think most people inhabit a grey area in between.

I'm definitely happy not to be solidly MC... Radio Four and gardening bore me to tears.

alistron1 · 17/04/2011 21:24

Watertight, I agree with you apart from the R4 and gardening thing!!

MarshaBrady · 17/04/2011 21:28

I can't listen to Radio 4 plays or the archers but I also can't bear dropped ts, adverts or shouty djs so have to go with R4.

Gardening is just planting a few things every now and again, not sure am doing enough. Love the look of it anyway.

alistron1 · 17/04/2011 21:32

Gardening, planting a few things now and again??! You have to incubate stuff and talk to it and care for it!!! As well as engaging in obsessive hedge trimming. It's like having a dog

MarshaBrady · 17/04/2011 21:35

Oh I love it, my garden knows this.

I admire it, a sometimes get the secaturs out, but no incubation.

Dh on lawn duty.

sausagesandmarmelade · 17/04/2011 21:39

LOL...just tested myself on this.

weedle · 17/04/2011 21:43

So have we come up with a definitive list as to what makes someone WC or MC?

To me the list that alistron1 posted contains a lot of 'grown up' past times. Does that mean that if you're in your 20's and away from the parental home, you can not be 'classed'?

I must be WC as I don't know what I am... (if you have to ask the price you can't afford it Wink)

alistron1 · 17/04/2011 21:50

I have been an Archers addict since I was a kid. 'Free the Ambridge 1' and all that.

And being erudite, articulate etc is not the preserve of the over 30's.

But I am working class. Cut me and I bleed coal Grin

NoseyMoo · 17/04/2011 21:52

What is the definition of Working, Middle and Upper class? We all have our own ideas of what it is to be Upper/Middle/Working class.
Is it the way we present ourselves? Our income? Our Morals? Our Values? The Societies we live in?
You are who you are and to put a label on it is rubbish and blooming well snooty!
Only idiots who believe they are Upper Class concern themselves with "Class".

weedle · 17/04/2011 21:59

No of course not, I just meant I met my first Archers listener at baby group last year. (She's 38)

Most people I know in their 20's are articulate but listen to Radio 1. Less than half have gardens but almost all are on a yearly salary rather than an hourly wage.

In terms of past times my social group are vehr vehr common. Blush

But most have reasonable jobs - police, teacher, engineer, solicitor etc so have either degrees or job related qualifications.

Cut me and I bleed pinot (clearly not posh)

alistron1 · 17/04/2011 22:04

Pinot is dead posh - I prefer frascati or a really chilled bottle of stella!!!

I listened to R4 in my 20's and had a garden. I did get knocked up at a v. young age though which (along with the brummy accent) locks me out of the middle classes Wink

weedle · 17/04/2011 22:12

Ahhh that lesser spotted MC Brummie.... I'm pretty sure they're endangered Wink

I had no idea you were privately educated. I don't believe you've ever mentioned it before. Next, you'll be telling us how you live in a crumbling Georgion house, surrounded by books.

I am a brummy (have I mentioned that?!!) like beer, chips in gravy but I've read The Odessey and The Illiad for fun despite going to a comprehensive school!! My main interest though (literature wise) is russian stuff (mainly tolstoy) vs condition of england novels. Fascinating.

My academic discipline though is maths.

My dad was a factory worker (now a delivery driver) and my mum ran pubs. I'm the third generation of my family who can write (my mums genealogical research threw up that I am descended from 'feeble minded idiots' and 'peasants'!!)

I like R4, gardening, neighbours, loud rock music and have nowt in common with the MC yummy mummies who I know.

What class am I?!!
