To be Disturbed by this woman in a Burka? ......

I saw a very strange event in Debenhams make-up counter this week-end which on reflection, I found very disturbing.
A woman in a full burka (including her eyes covered in thin veil) came up to the make-up counter with a man (presumably DH). The man then proceeded to ask about foundation for the woman and had a conversation with the sales assistant which rarely included the woman at all (apart from trying on a sample colour on her hand).
I felt so sorry for the poor woman - not only to be forced to wear this ridiculous veil but she wasn't allowed even to chose her own make-up!
I did give the man my best evil looks but he didn't seem to notice - perhaps because I was a woman!! I was too cowardly to say anything.

On the day that France bans the burka I wonder whether you would have said anything?

and showing their faces :) most banks have female staff and private rooms - job done :)

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 21:05

Mama- Good for you. I for one would fight for the right for you to wear what you like, as I would for any woman. I'm sure you're probably aware but ignorance is playing a large part on this thread.

If I'm in a "Muslimmy" part of the city near to me I tend to speak in Arabic (without a hijab) merely because it throws people's presumptions off.

goodbyemrschips · 11/04/2011 21:05

They don't work either, are they allowed too?

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 21:06

It's interesting because most of you who say the niqab makes you feel that these women are unapproachable probably wouldn't go out of your way to greet them if they were just wearing a hijab. The burka ban has become a rather effective masquerade for islamaphobia.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 21:07

Wearing a veil is a choice I can understand and see this as a woman who is not a muslim, same as a woman who is catholic may be come a nun or not...it's about choice...amazing how choice is fine in western religions but is completely about oppression in others

nailak · 11/04/2011 21:08

mama2plusbump, we could open a paltalk room or somethin if people wanted i would join you,

these days with telephone and internet bankin how often do you actually need to o into a bank?

is that how they do it in passport control? i didnt know, but anyway most niqaabis would tell you they wouldnt mind showin their face for security purposes as most dont believe it is somethin which is compulsory in islam.

i dont work but my husband does and he dont have a bank account but i do, so i et all his money, is he oppressed? lol

goodbyemrschips · 11/04/2011 21:08

I find them very aggressive in their speech.

So you are right I would not approach.

nijinsky · 11/04/2011 21:08

Mumcentreplus how can you choose effectively when your education is restricted and your social interaction limited?

mama2plusbump · 11/04/2011 21:08

Lol at nor doing baking! Between me and my daughters we have 6 bank accounts, my mum
Has her own as well as joint, all my female famiy do! Seriously where do you get your wonderfully stupid facts from?!
Yes some women areforced to wear it and id be the first to kick off about that but i dont know forced to wear it,i do however know women who are forced not to wear the veil.

wubblybubbly · 11/04/2011 21:09

goodbye are you seriously asking if muslim women are allowed to work?

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 21:10

Calling people stupid is moronic in itself.

goodbyemrschips · 11/04/2011 21:10

Live in the western world, abide by the western way.

Live elsewhere abide by their ways.

simples.

Mumcentreplus · 11/04/2011 21:10

I have seen and talked to women who wear the niqab ...they don't seem less effectual in their speech...they are not afraid..they are confident and full on as any woman..yes it's unusual to see a woman just eyes only but that does not make me judge her...or respect her less

scottishmummy · 11/04/2011 21:10

i work with muslim women.of course they work.oh and go to clydesdale bank at lunch too.

nailak · 11/04/2011 21:11

i dont work because i choose to dedicate my time to raisin my kids, increasin my knowlede throuh studyin, servin the community throuh voluntary oranisations and actin as school overnor, and talkin on mnet,

i am allowed to work, i dont actually know who you think would stop me if i wanted to or who would allow or disallow me? but becuase as a muslim it is the responsibility of the man to support the family and even if a women works the man has no riht over her money and she doesnt have to use it to support the family, if she chooses to it is considered as charity.
does that make the man oppressed?

MikeOxstiff · 11/04/2011 21:11

LadyOfTheManor
My local bank has plenty of muslims in it. I think they do a special halal bank account for muslims

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 21:12

I have also not met a Muslim person whom does not belive they are superior to everybody else. Frightening really how wonderfully deluded they are.

HHLimbo · 11/04/2011 21:12

I would say Vive la France!

Freedom! Equality! Community!

(exactly the 3 things a burka makes impossible)

chickchickchicken · 11/04/2011 21:13

mama2plusbump - have you ever worked in a womens refuge? would you consider doing anything to help muslim women who are oppressed to escape?

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 21:13

How many male friends are you allowed to have nailak?

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 21:13

Youaretoo- You are so broad in your reasoning you are bordering on being rather insulting and full of hate toward a religion. It's not surprising you want the burka banned.

squeakytoy · 11/04/2011 21:13

Where on earth do people get the idea that muslim women are not allowed to work?

If you go to Bolton, which has a very high population of muslim women, you will even see them wearing the burkha as they serve on the tills in some shops. They speak with a broad Bolton accent, and they are human beings, just like everyone else.

My mother worked in the cotton mills most of her life, and worked alongside many muslim women.

wubblybubbly · 11/04/2011 21:13

"Live in the western world, abide by the western way.

Live elsewhere abide by their ways.

And the 'western way' is what, according to you? Freedom to express yourself in anyway you wish, unless you're a muslim?

YouaretooniceNOT · 11/04/2011 21:14

I want to wear a bikini in Cairo..

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 21:14

Do the posters who want the burka banned feel enlightened that they can wear make up? Wear high heels? Show their breasts? Do this make you feel empowered? Do you realise you are a victim of the same sort that you are patronising?
