I think I might be. Tis DHs 40th and just realised I want to take him to see the tattoo on his birthday. But short of a second mortgage think I may be doomed. If anyone knows of any reasonably priced, special enough for a birthday and within a walk of Edinburgh Castle accomodation let me know. Don't like giving up easily! or should I just buy an ipad

look on laterooms.com

ratspeaker · 10/04/2011 20:31

oo it'll still be festival/fringe time, so busy
Within a walk of the castle is in the centre so again busy and expensive
Maybe if you look a wee bit otside the centre it'll be cheaper

keep googling is al I can suggest

You do know its Festival in Edinburgh in August? Fab time to go, but best get accomodation (and tickets if you want to see big names) sorted very soon!

Try Hotel Du Vin for something a bit special.

All depends on your budget - prices really go through the roof in the festival esp as that is the bank holiday weekend (I think?). I've just checked a few reliable places which are nice but not £££ and they are all £200/night minimum for that weekend.

How about this place? It's owned by Edinburgh University and is still available, £109 per night that weekend. Not a swish hotel but good location and is new so will be in good nick.

loflo · 10/04/2011 20:47

I know its festival time Grin I used to moan like feck all August live in town.

Looks like it might have to be somewhere like Dunfermline and travel in. But parking will be an effing nightmare and DS will moan cos he is tired looking more and more like an ipad

Thanks all. Off to check out some more links!

A few years ago I bought tickets in about May to go to a gig in Edinburgh during the festival. I didn't book a B&B until about the week before and got a lovely place. Don't worry - I'm sure you'll be fine!

I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the B&B though!

theborrower · 10/04/2011 20:52

You'll be lucky - I'd get booking up asap, you know how it is!
If you can't find somewhere close to the castle, what about a really nice guest house a bit further out in the suburbs but make sure it's on a really good bus route? Look at Lothian Buses website for details of routes etc if you need the info.

AgentProvocateur · 10/04/2011 20:54

The Tattoo is sold out on the Saturday already, so you'd be best buying tattoo tickets first and then look for accomm.

Do you want my playhouse to sleep in???

I have a suspicion that the tattoo tickets are sold out though as they went on sale in Jan/Feb. My mum looks after the performers and I see the first full run through at the barracks

Northernlurker · 10/04/2011 20:58

Errr - have you run this plan past dh? Personally I would raher have all my teeth extracted by Margaret Thatcher than spend my 40th in Edinburgh over the Bank Holiday Festival weekend.

loflo · 10/04/2011 21:06

Ta for offer Groovee Smile. Have a possible source of tattoo tickets but did wonder about coming to Edinburgh the weekend after for the fireworks concert but would mean DS skipping a days school. Lol @ Northernlurker - it's his spirtual home and he is always happy to be there. I think. off to find link for apple store

We stayed at the Raddisson Blu last August - it was far from cheap, but the location is so perfect - it's on the Mile. Edinburgh was INSANE though.

Northernlurker · 10/04/2011 21:14

I love Edinburgh too loflo - dh's home town but not in Festival time. Hope you get sorted and have a lovely time though.

Folicacid · 10/04/2011 21:15

Whoa whoa whoa, I don't think you have to schlep all the way to Dunfermline!

You will find something, it just won't be as quick and simple as it would be normally. Also, if you do have to go further afield and have lived in Edinburgh you'll know the buses are pretty good, comprehensive and regular so you could look further out, The Shore, Southside, Morningside, Out west to Corstorphine. Or lothians, Musselburgh etc.

loflo · 10/04/2011 21:18

See if I made it the weekend after would get far more for our money. Oh decisions! I know Folic but its finding somewhere that has room at the inn thats not an arm and a leg. Oh to be organised personalisation for ipad?

Folicacid · 10/04/2011 21:25

Loflo do you have a budget per night in mind?

Folicacid · 10/04/2011 21:26

or do you want luxury?....just thinking there's novotel, travelodges, holiday inns etc.

latermater · 10/04/2011 21:26

That weekend is always the international television jamboree/conference when the entire tv industry decamps to Edinburgh, filling any available hotel rooms (especially the nice ones) not already occupied by festival goers - does it really have to be that weekend?

loflo · 10/04/2011 21:30

I was reckoning on about £150 per night. But even for that theres not much. Starting to think the following weekend might be better and go and enjoy the fireworks in the gardens (starting to wonder why we never did these things when we lived there!)

fairylights · 10/04/2011 21:31

I have an attic room you could stay in.. but its not at all romantic or special or relaxing especially with my kids around! Grin But only a 20 min walk to castle.. Smile

Folicacid · 10/04/2011 21:34

Ach who ever does things that are on their doorstep Grin

loflo · 10/04/2011 21:37

Aw thanks for the offer fairylights Smile

I am really starting to think I could go down the ipad route and come down the following weekend for the fireworks rather than blowing the budget for tattoo. Watcha think?

OP posts:
Groovee · 10/04/2011 21:37

Try the novotel at hermiston gait as it's right next to the station and 10 mins on the train into town.

Folicacid · 10/04/2011 21:39

I'd x a million prefer an ipad to the tattoo...so that gets my vote. It will probably piss it down and you'll have to wear one of those yellow ponchos and sit in the rain.

loflo · 10/04/2011 21:41

I aint wearing no yellow poncho sucker!
