To hate the Grand National

Well, I do anyway. To quote a discussion on another forum, here's why:
"A total of 35 horses have died at the Grand National since 1999. That means an average of 2.5 horses per year/race. This does not compare to any other equine event held in this country."
There is no other sinlge competetive equine event in the whole of the UK where the horses entered have such a statistically high chance of meeting their death, on the same day every year.
The stats for the whole of racing are bad enough, and there are arguably some callous practises in the industry, where the animals are largely treated as disposable commodities. But, leaving that aside for now - this race - not worth it.

(Don't tell me the owners love their horses, maybe some do, but in my experience working as a groom on a racing yard for a year, the majority think they have some great investment. If the horse is lame they are more worried about when it will race again than the welfare of the horse. They'd be lucky to be able to pick their horse out if it was in a field with 10 others and not wearing their colours).

Disgusting woeful practice which has to be done away with IMO.
Wrong. So very wrong. :(

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2011 20:38

Yanbu. Hate it. Have a dh who is a sports journalist and therefore we have the radio tuned to 5Live all the time. Every single fucking year they wheel out the people trying to justify this equine carnage. Can't stand it, will never bet, will never watch it, will never participate in any way.

expatinscotland · 09/04/2011 20:44

That's the first time and the last time I'll be watching that. I had no idea what it was Blush.

SmethwickBelle · 09/04/2011 20:44

Just read that two horses died in today's National - am really shocked, I didn't realise this is considered an "average", I don't think I will bet again, had always just seen it as a bit of fun.

fascicle · 09/04/2011 20:52

Lucyinthepie - completely agree. Had a very similar conversation about the GN in this house today. I don't understand how this race is so celebrated, and why people think it's acceptable.

Cattleprod · 09/04/2011 20:54

Even looking at it from a purely financial viewpoint, what is the benefit of entering a very expensive, highly-trained horse into a race which has such a high mortality rate? It's a bit like putting a formula 1 car into a demolition derby at the local banger racing circuit.

Is the prize money significantly higher in the Grand National than other, safer races? Because to put it bluntly, a dead horse isn't going to provide an income from future race winnings, sponsorship deals, sirings etc.

I'm not a fan of horse racing and have never watched the Grand National - please could someone explain why this particular race is responsible for so many deaths?

Lucyinthepie · 09/04/2011 20:57

Cattleprod, it's a gamble. They gamble with the horses' lives.
The race is responsible for so many deaths because of the challenging nature of the course, the high numbers of horses running, and the fact that some of them shouldn't be in it in the first place. (In my humble opinion!).

YANBU. Given the chance I'd horsewhip every bugger who was involved, from the breeders, trainers and riders to the idiots who bet on it.

It's yet another example of how backwards this country is when it comes to animal welfare.

anonacfr · 09/04/2011 20:59

Basically it's very long, with difficult jumps and 40 horses running all over the place.
When riders fall some horses carry on following the pack and get in the way which causes additional hazards.

Horses are entered for the prestige- whoever wins it will always be know as a Grand National winner. It brings prestige to the horse and its owner/stable.

But they all come out every year: "Yes, its awful, yes, its tragic, no one wants to see a horse die, yes, we have made the course easier" - absolute fucking fucking fucking bollocks. I cannot like or admire Clare Balding as a female journalist in a man's world because of her involvement in this carnage.

forwantofabetter1 · 09/04/2011 21:07

afraid we love the National in our house. DH is an avid fan of the Nags both from a gambling and watching point of view. We all had bets today even the kids.

From what I saw the jockey was still holding Ballabrig when the trainer ran up to congratulate him and the decision not to lead him into the parade ring was done in the horses best interest as it was more important to rehydrate him and get him somewhere calmer.

Yes it is a hard race and inevitably sometimes there are dreadful accidents where horses and jockeys can be hurt and in the case of the horses die but its a high risk sport and unfortunatley sometimes accidents can happen.

yes, we have made the course easier" - absolute fucking fucking fucking bollocks.

They have made the course considerably easier over the past 20 years, and tightened up the entry conditions.

ilovesooty · 09/04/2011 21:09

They say once a horse has run in the GN it is never the same again

Who says?

forwantofabetter1 · 09/04/2011 21:11

Horses often run the National more than once

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2011 21:14

Yes, they have made the course easier - and still horses die every year. My fucking fucking fucking bollocks comment means: so what if you have made the course easier, you have obviously not made it easy enough.

Hope you understand my pov now ilovesooty.

What is your take on the GN?

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2011 21:16

Infact, as far as I am concerned, the Grand National is indefensible in the same way that child abuse is indefenisbile. So, please, someone, come and argue the case FOR for me, am all ears ...

flyinstar · 09/04/2011 21:16

tragic ,and should have been banned long agoAngry
WHAT A WASTE OF SUCH A BEAUTIFUL,MAJESTIC ANIMAL...

ilovesooty · 09/04/2011 21:18

still horses die every year

Actually there were no fatalities in the 2010 race.

I understand your POV: I don't really agree with it though.

forwantofabetter1 · 09/04/2011 21:20

hmm think u are BU to liken GN to Child abuse but I would even try to persude you to like it as your mind is so obviously made up

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2011 21:21

Nit-picking.

How many races have been without fatalities in the past 50 years?

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/04/2011 21:23

Don't anybody try to persuade me to like the Grand National. Am just warning you now.

Usually I know I am wrong about everything.

Not on this issue, though, am quite confident I am entirely 100% and absolutely totally right Grin.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 09/04/2011 21:24

I agree with you, and I don't even like horses, I am scared to death of them, but I just do not understand why this still goes on.

ohnoudidnt · 09/04/2011 21:26

YANBU It is very cruel.
