I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

They're trying to back out of the ban, smartypants. Some other EU countries don't want to comply.

MrsBananaGrabber · 08/04/2011 21:24

...and as for the poster who called the OP petty...having concern for other living beings is hardly petty, what a sad reflection on you!

That would be me.

Getting angry because someone chooses to not to buy free range eggs, not knowing their circumstances is very very petty and horrible, unless you have had your head in the sand you will know that people are losing their jobs left and right, not to mention all the other major issues to be angry about at the moment.

Now excuse me while I go and kick my dog.

millie30 · 08/04/2011 21:25

Marianne, so what if TV isn't a necessity? Isn't it up to individuals how they prioritise their spending?

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 21:27

Oh for goodness sake, I have lived before on a shopping budget of £25 a week, it is perfectly possible to not buy crappy value eggs if you care enough. Which you should.

I, unlike many other people, do NOT have my head in the sand about what I am feeding my family and its provenance, which I think is pretty important.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 21:27

Bogeyface "FFS, why is that so hard for some people to understand. It really IS that close to the bone for some!"

Don't patronise me, I do know this. I appreciate this, and I realise that there are people who have no choice but to buy the 2 for £5 chickens in Tesco, or buy battery.

MY point, however, was that my sister is a cheapskate and doesn't give a shit (and she can more than afford extra)

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 21:27

Of course Millie, just commenting on those posters who say they stay up at night worrying about money and cannot cut out anything else from their expenditure.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:28

'I wouldn't say that TV was a necessity either.'

Our phone is a necessity as we have PAYG mobiles and sometimes, we don't have credit on them. Also, the ILs have no mobiles and live 90 miles away, so we have a phone for them to contact us.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:29

'Of course Millie, just commenting on those posters who say they stay up at night worrying about money and cannot cut out anything else from their expenditure.'

And completely ignoring that it was pointed out to you by more than one poster that if you signed a contract, back when things were better, you can't get out of it without paying big penalties you can no longer afford.

Hmm
LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 21:30

Marianne they can't - very recently when DH lost his job we were stuck in a contract with virgin.

Cancelling our contract cost the sum of all our payments for the rest of the contract - nearly three hundred pounds! We didn't have a choice but to keep paying. So yes we were poor and on benefits with cable tv and swish internet and eating as cheaply as we could.

It happens a lot.

ohnoudidnt · 08/04/2011 21:30

MrsBananaGrabber Im not petty or horrible,I just think people should respect what they eat and care about how that animal has had to live its life.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows I agree with everything you have said.

OP posts:
millie30 · 08/04/2011 21:31

I worry about my finances constantly, but I wouldn't get rid of my TV. I have my reasons for that, which may seem petty to some, but are important to me. I would never assume to tell people what they should do without, or spend their money on.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:31

Shock LaWeasel! On benefits? Bet you had a flatscreen TV as well! :o

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 21:31

expat & LaWeasel - fair enough

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 21:31

Your attitude is petty and horrible. If you are not willing to consider other people's point of view about something so emotive than you are extremely blinkered too.

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 21:31

I'm more cross at supermarketstescos that have provided the cheap chicken for the masses than the people buying the cheap chicken because it feeds their family.

There is no winner in it all apart from tescos. The chicken has no quality of life,it pays the farmer a pittance, you end up feeding your kids shitty inferior meat, tescos rakes in the profits.

goodbyemrschips · 08/04/2011 21:32

If you care so much about the animals why do you eat them at all?

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 21:32

Indeed, Thingumy.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:33

We really need Solidgold to come on this thread :o.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 21:33

Grin expat - we did as well!! Old one had broken down not long before so we'd got a shiny new one. (Not too big obviously - we're not those kind of people Wink)

MrsBananaGrabber · 08/04/2011 21:34

OP, i'm sure you are a lovely person, just think before you get angry about such trivial matters, it really is such a bourgeois thing to get angry about.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:35

That's okay, LaWeasel, as long as it was from BrightHouse or Kays :o.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 21:36

It's not trivial at all MrsBG, it's basic humanity to care about other living beings and their welfare and a hell of a lot less petty than some of the stuff that is posted on here.

I feel sorry for you if you think that you think extreme cruelty to animals is a trivial matter.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 21:37

MrsBananaGrabber, a trivial matter? What a thing to say. Do you think similarly about other "trivial" ethical issues?

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 21:37

'bourgeois thing to get angry about'

Being middle class has got fuck all to do with supporting no animal cruelty.
