I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

i think sainsburys do only free range,

slartybartfast · 08/04/2011 20:11

but i think there is more to worry about in life

Ormirian · 08/04/2011 20:12

Agree

bamboobutton · 08/04/2011 20:12

morrisons also sells boxes of 4 free range eggs for 35p. most places would have a morrisons near them i would've thought.

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/04/2011 20:12

Yanbu.

If you can't afford the 20p difference per half dozen, then don't buy eggs imo.

You hear the same argument about chicken. But since when was chicken an essential part of a diet? I would rather eat free range once a month than value once a week.

Bogeyface · 08/04/2011 20:13

A conscience costs money, and for some people its too expensive.

Its all very well to say that "oh its only an extra 50p" but to a family who is struggling, the welfare of their own child is going to be more important than the welfare of a chicken.

FunnyBumbleBee · 08/04/2011 20:15

To be totally honest, I hadn't even thought of that about the workers. Now I feel bad! I can see that people might not be able to afford the difference between a free range and non-free range chicken, but the difference in eggs isn't much. I suppose you can always buy much cheaper cuts of meat. Or offal. free range chicken livers at our butchers are very cheap and shin of beef or oxtail etc is very low priced too.

Bogeyface · 08/04/2011 20:15

Oh and some people dont actually care where their food comes from as long as its cheap, and all the animal welfare campaigns in the world wont change their minds.

All in all, nice if you care and can afford it but U if you dont or cant!

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:16

... no.

I'm going to have to leave this thread.

I realise this is too close to the bone right now, but if you cannot see that there is more involved in what kind of eggs you buy then how much you care about chickens, including but not limited to: price, what shops are accessible to you and how well stocked they are you might want to refocus some of your misplaced ire at people who don't always buy free range bloody eggs into considering what life is really like for other people.

southeastastra · 08/04/2011 20:16

crickey the middle class really do care more for chickens more than people

amberleaf · 08/04/2011 20:16

YABVU, I cant afford free range eggs

hissymissy · 08/04/2011 20:16

YABU. I have exactly £27.13 to last till next weekend for DS and me. This is for all food, petrol, and electricity if it runs out.

I will go to the supermarket this weekend, and if the FR eggs are 87p for a 1/2 dozen and the 'value' eggs are 90p for a dozen, I will get the value ones, because I can't afford any meat or fish or treats this week, or the week after that ( I have bugdetted £20 for the following week ).

Unless people eat copious amounts of eggs, they really aren't going to spend much extra buying free range. I don't think YABU, people who don't give a shit or are too selfish to care about the welfare of the animals they either eat or of the animals that produce what they eat make me angry too.

We have our own free range, very friendly pet hens and their eggs are delicious. I give any spare away for free to our neighbours.

ohnoudidnt · 08/04/2011 20:18

I buy free range everything ,but only in small amounts,as my family do not eat alot of meat...i do understand about the extra cost, but i would really rather do without something myself and pay the extra to know i have not supported such horrific conditions a animal has to go through..., I am now vegetarian after watching a video on the PETA website with Sir Paul McCartney. After watching that i promised myself i would never eat meat again.

YABU. Not everyone can afford to buy free range.

blackeyeddog · 08/04/2011 20:19

Totally agree with you. Battery hens have shit lives. Good eggs are incredibly cheap in the scheme of things.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:20

Look: at tesco I can get 15 eggs for 1.50ish. Or I can get 6 free range ones for 1.50 ish, so 1.50 versus 3.75. That extra £2.25 means I can get a huge bag of frozen sausages and have protein for 9 meals for £3.50

That is the maths some people in this country are doing.

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 08/04/2011 20:21

I think as a rule, people in this country eat a lot more protein than they really need to.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:21

Not if they're underweight they're not. Hmm

LoopyLoopsChupaChups · 08/04/2011 20:22

I don't mean you personally, I mean the general population.

ohnoudidnt · 08/04/2011 20:23

LECCE... No not just eggs, but this is what i happen to notice other people buying when in the supermarket....maybe because people open the box to check eggs ok & i just always notice if other people go for battery/barn.

PlanetEarth · 08/04/2011 20:24

I agree with you, although actually I think it's unreasonable that anything else is permitted.

As for "can't afford it", then don't eat eggs! And remember in WWII one egg a week per person was the usual ration. (Don't know how they survived mind you. And only 2oz of cheese a week - but 8oz sugar per person per week. They must have lived on sugar.)

slartybartfast · 08/04/2011 20:24

i think we ought to mind our own business about what is in other people's shopping trolleys. op.
and not get angry,
that is a waste of energy

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 20:25

It doesn't matter though does it?

Essential a whole load of people have come on this thread and had a go at anyone who doesn't buy free range eggs because generally you shouldn't NEED to eat them and generally it doesn't cost that much more.

And not joining the dots that actually you're criticising specific people who probably feel pretty sensitive about the fact that they have to buy what they do.

It's totally unnecessary and judgemental.
