I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

Agent ZigZag - If you think like that you'd have to find out about everything you buy that's animal related which could get a bit obsessive perhaps.

Not obsessive, it's called living a cruelty free lifestyle and is not that hard.

Bogeyface · 08/04/2011 21:15

what about your internet connection? Surely a luxury?

Well that took atleast 4 pages longer than I expected! I cant speak for anyone else but when I was in the situation I described above, we had our internet connection because we had to. We had signed up for it before ex lost his job and were in a contract that would have cost more to get out of than the total cost of the connection.

Is that OK?! Hmm

PureNewWoolWithPerfectStitches · 08/04/2011 21:15

YANBU. I now try and buy free range meat and always buy free range eggs. Free range chicken is ££££ so we eat FAR less chicken than we used to. I'd rather not have it at all than eat battery chickens.

Dred · 08/04/2011 21:16

I got some lovely farm eggs last week, & my brother who's staying atm bought his own asda cheap crap & proceeded to tell me to throw mine out & feed my ds (11 mo) the ones he got Confused. I laughed at his stoopid fussiness whilst ds ate a scrumptious double yoker, lol!

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 21:17

do you eat any meat then youcan?

Ragwort · 08/04/2011 21:18

Why do people care so much about chickens when there are so many elderly/young/disabled etc etc people living in horrendous conditions in this country?

I don't give a toss about chickens' living conditions (although I am the first to agree that free range taste much nicer) - I do care that so many old people in our society are treated like s*

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 21:19

marrianne who said it was difficult Confused

BTW

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:19

We signed a contract, too, an 18-month-long one. It will be up in May.

Our 'local' library, which is 4 miles away, is closing.

'Expat......you say you want rescue rabbits.....have you thought about house bunnies?'

Aw, house bunnies? Do they get on with cats? :) I always thought you needed a garden to get one from a rescue place.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 21:19

YANBU

I can't stomach barn eggs. The idea makes me feel sick and I can't eat them. I had to refrain from arguing with my sister the other day when she said she bought the cheapest eggs possible as she is on a budget Hmm (the hmm is because she's got an extra quid or two to spend on eggs a week!)

Her reasoning was that her and he DS eat so many eggs a week that she wouldn't be able to afford them if she bought free range. Unless they're eating hundreds of eggs a week between the two of them, the difference is minimal. I do buy organic most of the time, or Burford Browns or similar. they're just better in so many ways.

Aren't barn chickens also pumped full of hormones and other shit?

millie30 · 08/04/2011 21:19

I have an internet connection because it's a necessity for my degree. I also got a bit of help with the set up costs from a university grant, I wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 21:20

MrsDeVere

You said that life is too short to chop on onion.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 21:20

Ragwort because animal welfare is a valid issue.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 21:21

You can care about both, Ragwort.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 21:21

Our internet/phone and tv is all mashed up together for a bargain price.

So that argument is a bit redundant stupid

Bogeyface · 08/04/2011 21:21

Jareth, to some people "an extra quid or two" is the difference between going hungry one day a week and having a meal!

FFS, why is that so hard for some people to understand. It really IS that close to the bone for some!

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 21:21

No, I am a vegan, Thingumy.

We should care about animals. They are living beings like us and can feel fear, pain and misery, just like us, they're just not the ones going around inflicting it. I'm as skint as the next person, I really am, and manage to feed my family of seven without resorting to feeding them tortured flesh and its products.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 21:22

Chopping onions is boring though, isn't it? And it makes you smell bad. And it makes you cry. Bastard onions. Garlic is worse though imo.

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 21:22

I guessed as much Wink

YouaretooniceNOT · 08/04/2011 21:23

YABU - i always buy free range if i can afford to!

smartyparts · 08/04/2011 21:23

Well, I would rather go without than buy battery eggs, but then I have never been on a budget. I'd like to think I would stick to my principles though.

Shame on Tesco for not following the other big supermarkets' leads.

Aren't eggs from caged hens going to banned from 2012 anyway?

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 21:23

It's usually a bundle that's cheapest - talking about internet/phone providers.

Rubyted · 08/04/2011 21:23

So long as your cat doesn't think they're lunch they'll get along fine. (I've heard of them sleeping in the same bed.). You litter train them, like cats. They don't need to go out at all. You could contact a local rescue and ask about it (or pm me...I love converting possible bunny owners!Grin

They won't lay you eggs...but are darn cute!

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 21:24

I wouldn't say that TV was a necessity either.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 21:24

Ragwort- I don't give a toss about chickens' living conditions.

How nice.

Perhaps this picture might change your mind.
