I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

LaWeasel Some studies have shown that individuals would be better to give up meat. Some studies have shown that if the whole population was to give up meat and keep similar eating habits things would be worse.

Which studies are these? Sounds rather strange. For me, the 2008 one from the IPCC - the world's top climate scientists - is the one I'll go by - they are the experts! Were the studies saying that if everyone gave up meat things would be worse sponsored by Fray Bentos?

There would of course be less livestock if there wasn't a need for it! There's never going to be a situation where the world turns veggie tomorrow and there's a sudden surplus of unwanted cows!

Susie, thanks for sharing that link. It amazes me that anyone could look at that and still want to eat eggs and support that industry.

People put their heads in the sand, though, and choose not to see. And the appalling cruelty continues.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 23:13

No MrsDeVere, but the cat population has dwindled....

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 23:14

But that is the point isn't it? If you personally want to be vege/vegan that's totally your perogative, but when you start insisting everybody else should be too you are left having to answer questions anbout all those animals that you think are more important than keeping my DD healthy and who won't be needed.

The best thing for the world, as in most cases in compromise. Some meat eaters and some veggie/vegan.

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 23:15

It makes me really, really angry actually. All these pathetic excuses all boil down to selfishness. "I like eggs and therefore I'm happy for birds to be ground alive and live in horrendous conditions." It's awful.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 23:16

LaWeasel - The best thing for the world, as in most cases in compromise. Some meat eaters and some veggie/vegan.

I'm afraid the world's top climate scientists would disagree with you there! The best thing for the world, as they found in their 2008 comprehensive study, would be for everyone to be at least vegetarian.

It's funny how people keep running back to the safety of the empty argument that you need to feed your family meat to keep them healthy and it's a health vs animals choice, when in fact it isn't and never should be - in fact, vegetarians live longer!

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 23:17

I can't believe I have been dragged into such a stupid argument.

I do not give a flying fuck if anyone wants to be veggatarian/vegan/if you think it will save the world/if you don't think it will save the world

The actual point was that sudden diet changes are dangerous and not the answer to meat eaters with money problems. A slow change to not eating meat is a good long term answer if you need to reduce food costs and it is possible for you and your inidividual diet needs. But as a medium term solution it's bloody ridiculous.

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 23:17

what about workedinaeggfactory's comment?

Are you not fucked off that we are being lied to in regards to 'free range' eggs?

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 23:17

LaWeasel my DD is VERY healthy, on a vegan diet. Again, it's wrong to suggest that you'd be compromising your (or your DD's) health if you stopped eating animals and chickens' eggs!

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 23:18

Yeah I know Susie but people just choose to disbelieve these things as the fantasies of mad animal rights loons and kid themselves that what they're eating is ok. Or, as has been evidenced here to spectacular effect, they hide behind the argument that they need to feed their families meat or dairy for cost/health reasons which is of course rubbish. Makes me so cross too.

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 23:18

I haven't suggested that anyone should do it immediately. Where has this idea come from?

I doubt very much that it would have anything other than a positive effect on people's health though.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 23:19

In 2010 WWF-UK and various other groups produced a study which said that meat substitues changed the picture from being a clear cut vegetarian winner.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 23:19

I hope that's organic, cruelty-free vodkay you're drinking.

scottishmummy · 08/04/2011 23:19

if eggfactory right the canny buyers are non-free range basic eggs, and op has been eating battery eggs all along, whilst feeling v smug

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 23:19

I'm going now, Susie, SparklyCloud, Marianne, and others who have spoken sense.

I think we won, though!

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 23:20

Oh, I know youcangetpregnant.

Well, if it's all about health for people they're making some big mistakes in eating meat, dairy and eggs!

The cost issue is ridiculous too!

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 23:21

Night, youcangetpregnant. :)

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 23:21

Well, it's a good thing I have cost issues, because based on this thread alone, if I had any money, I'd jump in my car - yes! a car - and go and get a chicken kebab right now, just because, and I wouldn't care if it were cruelty-free or not.

Mmmm. I feel like eating meat again. :o

expatinscotland · 08/04/2011 23:22

'I think we won, though!'

Haahaa. You make people want to eat meat.

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 23:23

ok, some of you are vegetarian/vegan. well done. you can feel very smug about that. but you have no right at all to berate anyone for not living their lives the same way as you. how dare you sit in judgement on others and make assumptions on other peoples circumstances based on your OWN situations? tbh, for all your preachyness you aren't coming across very well at all. rather self-righteous, smug and bullying.

"look at me, I care" lots of people care, just about different things. do you drive? does that not harm the environment? do you go on holidays? so please, get out of that ivory tower, its made of elephants doncha know!

scottishmummy · 08/04/2011 23:23

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 23:23

and marianne, i repeated my posts because I was asked to clarify.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 23:23

The reason this conversation started is that it was suggested as an immediate answer to people who couldn't afford free range eggs this week.

It was repeated several times.

It was pointed out some people specifically need meat to process the nutrients they need after long term health problems.

People still said it was fine (oh you'll lose some weight... we don't need to lose any weight thanks very much as I have also said my family are all underweight and we need to eat very carefully and have specific plans on how to do this. Which yes includes eggs and some meat, even though we can't currently afford super welfare standards)

Suddenly going vegan was suggested again.

This is NOT healthy.

I have said many many times that there is NOTHING wrong with a vegan diet done properly. But that suddenly changing is dangerous, and doing it without being very careful is also dangerous.
