I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

Tofu is actually worse for the environment than beef. Go google.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:42

It's funny how we choose which animals to scoff, though, isn't it? That as a culture we say that it's ok to eat X, but not Y. Maybe fox tastes of arse or something.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:42

Chicken, fox, or Noel Fielding?

notprEGGersjustchocolate · 08/04/2011 22:42

Well said faverolles!!
Go on girl!!!

[finally, some sense!]

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:43

Now I am PMSL.

I didnt mean the foxes looked like Noel Fielding.

Hang on, I cant type.

I mean they look like the Crack Fox off TMB.

Hahahaha

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:44

lissielou, we get the message. You don't have to explain your health issues and diet to everybody, honestly.

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 22:45

But don't you get why this is so sensitive for some people? That sweeping in and saying "oh go vegan if you can't afford eggs" is really unhelpful and insulting?

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:46

Oh, LaWeasel.(sighs).

I think what you mean is that soya is bad for the environment?

It is, but only because it is grown in such large amounts so that it can provide feed for animals bred for meat. So, if we stopped eating meat, less soya would be produced!

But the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which comprises the world's top climate scientists, concluded that beef is the worst contributor to climate change. Some scientists say that meat eating is actually the no.1 contributing factor, ahead of air travel even.

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:46

youcan I know you CAN get everything you need from a vegetarian/vegan diet but you suggested a meal plan of noodles, pasta, rice and pizza with vegetables and you couldn't eat this long term or you would be ill. I very rarely eat meat - I'm not veggie just don't really like it. As I cook the family don't eat a lot either but I'm always careful to use lentils, beans or soya when meat is not part of a main meal.
Is it just animal welfare that is an ethical issue for you? Because you seem sceptical that EVERONE doesn't have the time/money to be ethical. I would argue that if you researched everything you buy down to the clothes on your back to make sure it was free range/fairtrade/country of origin not to be boycotted then it would take an amount of time and money that MOST people don't have. If you don't live 100% ethically then I think you are hypocritical criticising others choices.

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:46

No, it isn't unhelpful or insulting, it's a good solution to a 'problem'.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:47

Hahahaa..

Chickens My feet my be clad with goat hair but that's nothing to do with ethics

SparklyCloud Actually isn't there a B vitamin that you can be deficient in while on a vegan diet (sorry, can't remember the details)

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:47

sorry didn't mean to post twice!

TrillianAstra · 08/04/2011 22:48

I believe that free range eggs are nicer.

It may be a placebo, but I can afford it.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:48

Thingumy I also don't eat palm oil!

Do I win the thread? Grin

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:49

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 22:49

you don't have any products that contain palm oil in your house jareth?

really? Shock

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:50

I don't think so, no.

workedinaneggfactory · 08/04/2011 22:50

Just testing name change!

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:50

I avoid palm oil too. It's tricky but do-able.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:51

buttonmoon, I don't think it's all or nothing. Nobody lives a perfect life so to say you cannot criticise unless you are perfect is silly.

But you can do everything you can within your financial capabilities, and I am arguing that it is within everybody's to follow a cruelty free diet.

For example, I would love to buy all my clothes from the People Tree or another ethical label. I cannot afford it. So I try to buy them from charity shops instead, at least that way I am not supporting chain stores that produce cheap labour and am making a charitable donation at the same time.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:51

Oh God. Workedinanegfactory is going to tell us something unpleasant. I can feel it in my brain.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:51

"I didnt mean the foxes looked like Noel Fielding."

I thought it was that which put you off eating them.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:51

I can't spell egg. Tit.
