I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

tofu is REALLY crap for the environment you know.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:34

MrsDeVere

Have you any idea what battery chickens/intensively reared cattle eat?

I though Noel Fielding's rather good-looking :)

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 22:35

susiewho:

the last time I had a vegetarian diet i ended up in hospital weighing 3st a change in my diet sends me spiralling. I also have incredibly weak bones and various deficiencies (read my posts) inc calcium, iron and vit D I lose weight very quickly and have a painful skeletal disorder. to start a vegan or vegetarian diet would damage me hugely (have discussed it with both my EDT and GP) for some people its not as easy as "cutting out meat" some people need more protein than you find in veg.

SparklyCloud · 08/04/2011 22:35

Xposts youcangetpregnant...no point trying to tell people.. for some reason meat eaters feel threatened by vegans. We know the truth Grin

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:35

I'm VERY glad to be a vegan. I'm a good weight and have a lot more energy than most women I know!

DD (nearly 3 years) is big, healthy, bright and full of beans (literally!)

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:35

I suppose someone, somewhere is eating fox right now

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 22:35

nobody said a vegan diet was unhealthy [cries]

They said suddenly switching to one can be dangerous, and that unbalanced vegan diets by people who don't know what they're doing are also bad for you!

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 22:35

Well, I don't buy Nike products and buy fair trade coffee, chocs and bananas (co-op has massively overpriced fair trade stuff) and don't buy cheapo chooks or their eggs.

I'm happy with that.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:36

No, LaWeasel, not if it's locally produced! The mass produced GSM soya you are referring to, that is responsible for destroying half the Amazon, is produced for animal feed, not for human consumption.

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:36

Thanks Weasel I will now be able to Mumsnet a lot more efficiently!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:36

Nouveau riche chickens Grin

ok chocolate! whatever you say. I think we both know that I have a very valid argument, and it's made you very very angry it seems.

you cant let it go can you? I dont think you DO have a very valid argument. I am angry that you are preaching and making smug assumptions about peoples lifestyles when you know fuck all about them.

faverolles · 08/04/2011 22:37

"Find another form of cheap protein then!!! If people can't afford free range, don't eat eggs...it won't kill you."

listen (stamps foot to get attention onto meeee)

The majority of free range chickens in this country live their lives in a far shitter state than battery hens.
"Free range" is a modern marketing success story. The hens are kept in terrible conditions. Their eggs are no more nutritious.
This is all a pointless argument. If welfare is so important to you, don't buy eggs, unless you keep them yourself or know someone who keeps them.

OK?

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:38

chocolate you weighed 3st??!! You ate food and you weighed 3st?

If you have an iron deficiency you certainly shouldn't be consuming dairy products.

You have a vitamin D deficiency? How can this be? Surely you go out in the sunshine?

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:39

Totally agree SparklyCloud, people do get awfully aggressive when you dare to suggest that their diet is cruel to animals!

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:39

Actually, a couple of people did say that a vegan diet is unhealthy, particularly for children, LaWeasel. I'd happily join the debate, as they're wrong!

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:39

Well said faverolles!

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 22:39

no susie, I had anorexia. that is why I cannot change my diet.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:39

marriane I have been a veggie for nearly 25 years.

Chicken, fox - all the same to me.

faverolles · 08/04/2011 22:40

Phew (wipes brow). Someone heard me :o

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:40

Tofu isn't half as bad for the environment as eating meat and dairy, LaWeasel. Soya's grown for animal food, land is cleared for grazing and don't get me started on the methane!

Tortington · 08/04/2011 22:40

i used to but now i go for cheap cheep

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 22:41

favarolles that's really interesting, thank you.

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 22:41

Palm oil consumption is also destroying the world.

30 sqaure miles a day of rainforest is felled a day to make way for plantations.

Palm oil is a ingredient in all of our cupboards.

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 22:41

susie, I have a condition called teitze's as well. low calcium, low Vit D, low iron (not related to ED) I drink orange juice when I eat iron and drink as much milk as I can to stop my ribs cracking when my cartlige swells. and now Im going to bed, because I am sick of having to explain every aspect of my diet to people.
