I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

I don't fancy munching a fox. I suspect they taste gamey.

Meat is a luxury - my poor dh doesn't get any because we can't afford it!
If we can't afford eggs that week, we don't eat eggs (much much cheaper than meat and a lot healthier too - and if you can pack free range from healthy happy hens in then yeah, that's the aim!).

Animal cruelty IS important as an arguement. Of course it is.
Animals in th main are social intelligent beings and deserve not to be treated the way in which a lot are.
People are quick to say 'oh why should I worry about the poor wee animals [sarcasm]'
Would love to see you inflict cruelty in that extreme on another living being; could you? Could you really? I struggle to believe that you could. Because you are compassionate people, of course you are. You have children and emotions and morals and a sense of right and wrong.

I am not against meat eating - we are carnivores and a lot of folk need their meat. Nobody is looking down on anyone - but it is a moral choice. Of course it is. And whether you are buying the free range eggs or the battery eggs based on a tight budget, it's a choice you have made beacuse you have chosen to buy the eggs.

To everyone who has said that a vegan diet leads to iron, protein and calcium deficiences - you are wrong!

A vegan diet is great for human health, animal welfare and the environment.

its not for everyone though, and to suggest it is, is dangerous!

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:28

chickens you, a poultry accomadation snob? I am shocked. More than shocked I am disapointed

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:28

roffle @ battery potatoes Grin

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:29

Why is it not for everyone?

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:29

The vegan diet youcan has just suggested would definitely lead to deficiencies - it basically consisted of refined carbs and veg.

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:29

Sorry, that question was for chocolate.

SparklyCloud · 08/04/2011 22:29

"I do actually normally eat free range eggs but I still think you sound like you've got your head up your own bum if you can't appreciate that free range are priced out of some people's budgets in a recession!"

Find another form of cheap protein then!!! If people can't afford free range, don't eat eggs...it won't kill you.I don't eat eggs at all.

If people took a stand and stopped buying battery eggs, they would stop altogether. They are stopping at some point thank god.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:29

But game is tasty! I ate reindeer at school and it was delicious!

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:30

Exactly Thingumy I think some people might need to have a look at their own house before they start taking the moral highground on here.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:30

Thingumy Yes. Yes I do.

I am clearly the only person that gives a shit about people, chickens and ethically-sourced clothes.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:31

Eat a fox? I live in East London - have you any idea what they eat Shock

They all look like that one off the Mighty Boosh round here.

shmoz · 08/04/2011 22:31

OP - I have an image of deranged mentalist standing at egg section in supermarket aisle getting all cross with non-free-range-egg-purchasers Shock

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:31

MrsDeVere, I am a purist. I dislike the new social climbing chickens with their airs and graces and new plastic mansions

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:31

On an unrelated matter why do some threads have lots of pages and some are just one big long page?

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:32

ok chocolate! whatever you say. I think we both know that I have a very valid argument, and it's made you very very angry it seems.

Some good protein sources, all of which can be bought at a reasonable price, are-

tofu
peanut butter
broccoli
brown rice
wholemeal bread
lentils
baked potato
fruit

these are just some. I am pregnant and have recently had my bloods done, and I am definitely getting everything I need, so no need to worry.

ChardonnayGirl2 · 08/04/2011 22:32

read up to page 10 and lost the will to live!!

Sorry - but we are top of the food chain and thats just the way it is!

If i've got the money, I buy free range - if not - I dont.

'shrugs'

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:32

DeVere - I'm almost PMSL.

Foexes with Noel Fielding heads...

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:32

Foexes??? Hmm

SparklyCloud · 08/04/2011 22:32

To those saying a vegan diet is unhealthy..what a load of old bollocks.
I had a full health mot 2 weeks ago including full blood tests and I am extremely healthy. There is no vitamin or mineral that you get, that I don't too. And I eat balanced carbs, fat, protein, fibre etc.

notprEGGersjustchocolate · 08/04/2011 22:32

I'm with Thingumy though - it is such a huge ethical debate. It will never ever be solved unless the world blows up and the population crashes.

Making an ethical choice in everything you do would be extremely difficult. I doubt anything on such a grand scale could be significantly changed.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:33

Jareth, you might actually be...the second coming

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 22:33

I don't know buttonmoon, fault perhaps?

On a lots of pages thread you can click "show all messages" just above go to page... to see it on one page.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:34

buttonmoon, they were just a few suggestions - you can get everything you need from a vegan or vegetarian diet with a bit of thought.
