I know that they cost more, but surely it is worth the extra to know the bird has had a better standard of living.

Thanks chocolate, from you I take that 'fuck off' as a compliment!

it wasnt meant as one. how dare you suggest that I am selfish because I put my family first, you self-righteous, sanctimonious fool.

I'll take that as a compliment too!

ooooh, Im stung Grin

mollyt · 08/04/2011 22:22

i too adopted some rescue battery potatoes but they couldn't cope with the freedom and fresh air and turned into shrivelled green nothings - so I mashed 'em and had em for tea.

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:22

Chickens I was just pointing out that unless you shop as ethically as physically possible then you can't really judge someone for buying battery eggs. And if you buy free range eggs but are happy to let producers in the third world be screwed to an extent that they can't feed their families to subsidise that then you might want to look at your priorities.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:22

Its NOT competitive poverty.

People are explaining their circumstances to put their choices into context.

I hate that expression. Its only ever used to shut people up.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:23

Chickens fight dirty. Plus, I know loads of people who wave their hands in front of their face and scream when a friendly hen attempts to land on their heads. Chickens would win by default.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:23

Nice try Chickens.

This thread is the new "woman with 4 kids uses disabled toilet" thread.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:23

Scottishmummy - why would anyone need to take a bullet for a hen?

Listen, if it came down to it, I'd probably eat you to save myself, if there was nothing else. Well, maybe. You sound tough as old boots.

But it's never going to come down to it, just as it never needs to be a choice between humans and animals. Yes, if you are a caveman with no other alternative but to eat meat. Not in the UK in 2011.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:23

"Why is Jareth the only person to care about chickens and people? Do we have to choose?! "

Yes Chickens. Yes you do.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:23

chocolate - ooooh, Im stung

Yep, that came across when you called me a fool!

mollyt · 08/04/2011 22:24

chocolate lets just agree to differ and end the discussion with a lovely omlette.

youcangetpregnantstandingup · 08/04/2011 22:24

pmsl at battery potatoes, actually very funny!

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:24

Oh, ok button. Well, yes I do buy as ethically as physically possible.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 08/04/2011 22:25

I would love to have some chickens in my garden.

I doubt they would survive the attentions of the foxes or the rest of my family who are all rampant carnivores though.

TBH what I really want is a pink Egloo (or whatever those things are called).

LaWeasel · 08/04/2011 22:25

youcan - I have to say from the things you suggested to me I'm a bit worried about your diet? What are your protein sources?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 08/04/2011 22:25

bullet for a hen? WTF?

Grin
chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 22:25

you have no argument. you have been a self righteous fool. and preachy. and now you are being passive aggressive. which makes you an even bigger fool.

Eglu lover, eh? I think they look like Apple 'puters from the '90's

chocolatecoveredlissielou · 08/04/2011 22:26

molly Grin agreed.

MarianneM · 08/04/2011 22:26

Eat the foxes - they roam free, so the meat's probably better quality.

Susiewho · 08/04/2011 22:26

To everyone who has said that a vegan diet leads to iron, protein and calcium deficiences - you are wrong!

A vegan diet is great for human health, animal welfare and the environment.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 08/04/2011 22:27

I wouldn't take a bullet for anything or anyone except my DS's. Even DH would have to fend for himself

buttonmooncup · 08/04/2011 22:27

I think I buy pretty ethically too - not sure if it is as ethically as possible as I don't hunt down products on the internet or anything but I know I'm fortunate to be able to do that. Show me someone hard up who can afford free range, fairtrade fruit/veg/clothes etc

Thingumy · 08/04/2011 22:28

So the people who buy fair trade coffee/tea and chocs also make sure they know their clothes aren't made in sweat shops?

It can go on and on and on

You will never be totally ethical in your purchases unless you live in a tinkers bubble type do and weave your clothes from your goats hair and milk your own sheep...
