to use the disabled toilet in this situation?

I took mine and my sister's DCs for a nice day out to the cinema. There was just me and 4 kids aged between 3 and 5. After we bought our tickets I took them to the Ladies toilet, they were all engaged and there were a few people waiting.

I decided not to wait and took the DCs out to the disabled toilet as there was no one using or waiting for it. When we had all finished we were washing our hands when someone tried the door, one of the DCs had unlocked it and this woman in a wheelchair came in with her partner, I said I won't be a minute. She glared at me and muttered some things.

I was really embarrassed that I had been caught out using the disabled toilet and I wanted to apologise to the lady for keeping her waiting (for less than a minute!) but she was really, really angry. The DCs ran out in opposite directions and I quickly said sorry to the lady and as I walked off she screamed "Bitch!" at me. I never turned back to look at her. I don't think the DCs noticed anything!

I was so upset I couldn't get it out of my head throughout the film, and it ruined my day. I don't think what I did was that bad. I thought that woman was really horrible. AIBU?

"If the ladies is busy and you are bursting for a wee, how many of you would go in the men's? Not many I shouldn't think."

I have absolutely no truck with piddling in the men's if the ladies are full. Is this another social faux-pas I've being committing without knowing it? Grin

vintageteacups · 07/04/2011 14:49

I guess that poses a nudity question though marmalade as men standing weeing at a urinal may have their willy exposed.

Good for you though - being that gutsy. Only time I have done that was at uni in a nightclub full of students so nobody could care less who weed where!

BunnyWunny · 07/04/2011 14:52

Would you be bothered if a man used the ladies when the gents is full (hypothetical of course as the gents never have a queue)?

marmaladetwatkins · 07/04/2011 14:52

What I do is hold the door open and shout in "LADY INCOMING! BE DECENT" then I sweep in and plant myself on the throne, whilst holding my nose to save myself from asphyxiation-via-stale-piss.

marmaladetwatkins · 07/04/2011 14:53

I really wouldn't give a toss, tbh. Honestly. In a cabaret spot grotty nightclub I frequent, men and women use each other's loos freely. No-one cares.

noddyholder · 07/04/2011 15:45

These toilets have no law saying who can and cannot use them. They are adapted to make it easier for those in wheelchairs and mobility issues to use but able bodies people are not banned from using them. It is a question of common sense and consideration if you are desperate for a wee and no one is waiting then I suppose it is petty to say no. Really the answer to this is to make all toilets accessible but as if that will happen in this country Sad

I agree Out of common decency able bodies people shouldn't use it but I don't think there is much anyone can do if they do iyswim.

BunnyWunny · 07/04/2011 16:00

But there are a lot more able bodied Hmm

Is this thread still going? it's just a big toilet that happened to be empty, for Godness sake, she didn't mug a Granny! Nobody got hurt!
Any 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' fans? LD covered this one quick nicely!

noddyholder · 07/04/2011 16:09

Bunnywunny are you just getting ready for a fight here as you cannot possibly think your POV is reasonable in any way and is to some of the posters here offensive. Like I said it is about common decency

BunnyWunny · 07/04/2011 16:12

Because able bodied don't have a choice of lots of loos- as in the ops case there wasn't a toilet free, and a long queue. She had a choice of no toilet which is often the case. Whenever have you seen a long queue of disabled people queuing for the toilet while the normal ones lie empty? I haven't.

There are some very self rightious people on here as always.

TandB · 07/04/2011 16:14

The thing about accusations of self-righteousness is that they generally involved a tacit concession that there is "right" involved. Otherwise you would be saying "There are some people who are wrong here as always".

Gemsy83 · 07/04/2011 16:14

And there are some very self centred 'wahhh my baybeeee is more important' type people on here- you can count yourself amongst those BunnyWunny. The way you bang on trying to compare having a child to a disability is shameful.

I never said having a child was a disability. I only said I think it is reasonable to use an empty toilet if it is available rather than try to have a wee with a baby in your arms, the toilet door open, or a screaming baby left outside. I believe most people in the 'real world' would do the same as it is commonplace for parents with buggies to use disabled facilities wherever I've been, not the shameful act that mumsnetters would have you believe.

Why would you need a choice of toilet if you are disabled??, surely you just want one you can get in? I don't want a choice of toilets as an able bodied person, just one I can get in the same.

marmaladetwatkins · 07/04/2011 16:26

Am shaking with laughter at Larry David. He is SUCH a tit.

Gemsy83 · 07/04/2011 16:28

Yes of course you want one you can get in- not easy if people who believe them having children/not wanting to wait constitutes using disabled facilities.

marmaladetwatkins · 07/04/2011 16:36

This thread is getting boring now.
How about a little ? Cheer us all up?

Gemsy83 · 07/04/2011 16:38

Or navigate away from it- perhaps?

1980Sport · 07/04/2011 16:38

But they'd have to use the disabled toilets if the baby changing facilities were also located there.

Sassybeast · 07/04/2011 16:39

Cripes Gemsy - 34 pages and you're still going ? Perhaps you need to hide the thread before you spontaneously combust ? Shock
