Just seen a thread about national anthems and it just reminded me how rubbish the English national anthem is... yes it's traditional but:
it has a boring, dreary tune that doesn't evoke any kind of feeling (for me), it's not actually about England just goes on and on about the monarchy and as an anti royalist I couldn't care less about "saving" the Queen/King.

Rubbish.

Also, the second verse isn't very nice... "lets kill everyone we don't agree with wooooo lalalala"

If you're an atheist, anti-royalist, it really hasn't much going for it!

There isn't an English national anthem.

God Save The Queen is the British national anthem, and although some parts of the Union have less warm feelings about it, that doesn't change its status.

I feel quite sorry for the English that they miss out on having their own.

It's too down tempo I'd say - but then again I'd also say I'm 42 and have only had to sing it about 3 times in my life so I don't really care. I can't only remember the first verse.

My df lived in the States and was forced to sing their national anthem quite a bit (as a foreigner) and they tried to draft him into vietnam. That's far scarier!

Why do we have to sing songs about our countries? I find it odd.

they should change it to 'land of hope and glory' - much more inspiring!

As a Christian I don't like it either - 'God save the Queen' - well no more than anyone else thanks!

And the later verses are horrible jingoistic nonsense.

I'd far prefer Jerusalem - as MummyDoIt says, the existing UK anthem offers little to republican athiests like me.

I like Land of Hope & Glory, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia - all much better than the tedious dirge we have now.

I LOVE La Marseillaise - that is the best one - and always try and watch French national football games (in World Cup / Euro Cup) in French pubs so I can pretend I'm in 'Casablanca'

I like the US one as well.

What they need to do is put some words to the Eastenders theme tune, innit.

"Anyone can fall in love", wasn't it.

I think The Archers theme tune would be far better.

But they did dind't they MissPenteuth - there was that awful single done by "Angie" from EE "Anyone can fall in Love" to the EE tune.
