To just not really get 'lol'?

Sorry but I don't. If I genuinely find you funny then I will laugh, without a cue.

Admittedly I got confused for months when I first thought it simply meant 'lots of love', I thought the world had gone all love liberal Blush

Are there other meanings I simply haven't got?

meditrina · 24/03/2011 14:28

It's "lots of love" first to me too

SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:29

I don't even like it for lots of love though. Am I aging quietly? I am 33 FFS not that old! (possibly therefore not being quiet while I age)

squeakytoy · 24/03/2011 14:30

it is quicker and easier to type than "that made me laugh"

Saltatrix · 24/03/2011 14:31

lol - laugh out loud
rofl- rolling on the fall laughing
lmao- laughing my ass off
brt- be right there
btw- by the way

FoofffyShmoofffer · 24/03/2011 14:31

There are people who punctuate every written sentence with LOL.
I swear if they really were lol-ing every time they said they were they would be carted off and certified. For their own good.

beautyspot · 24/03/2011 14:32

It makes me clench my teeth everytime someone types it. Pathetic I know to get so irritated by a little word - BUT I DO.

Abcinthia · 24/03/2011 14:33

A lot of people on my facebook seem to use lol like a full stop. Just imagine a great big paragraph with no full stops (or any punctuation) with lol inserted every 5 or 6 words. It's enough to drive someone mad.

Saltatrix · 24/03/2011 14:33

I know people who have typed it so much they literally say 'lol' out loud when they hear something funny.

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:33

Senorita - I too used to think it meant lots of love - I'm sure I must have used it in the wrong context on several occasions before I realised.....

FWIW - I don't think it is a "cue" to laugh, it's not telling you to laugh, it's you telling someone that you "laughed out loud at that joke/comment/whatever".

Does that make sense? Confused

SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:34

Foofffy that is what I mean. LOL. It's unnecessary. LOL.

Saltrix - yes, I'm understanding them, I just don't like LOL in particular.

OP posts:
MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:35

There was a thread on here a while ago where a poster said that she knew someone who ended nearly every sentence with lol.

"Just hung my washing out lol"

"Going out for dinner tonight lol"

"Just got back from my grandad's funeral lol"

Hmm
FoofffyShmoofffer · 24/03/2011 14:36

If you really were ROFL, LMAO or PMSL I would give you a verrrrry wide berth.

I would label this person an arseless, piss smelling, floor rolling hysteric, smile at them benignly then run the hell away.

SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:36

MrsRyan and Squeakytoy yes I get the LOL say on here when someone makes you spit your tea out. It is when someone writes there own words and laughs at them. You know, they overuse it to highlight how funny THEY are (when as a general rule they aren't that funny at all).

OP posts:
SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:38

Aha MrsR, exactly the person who makes me shudder and take Foofffy's plan of running for the hills. LOL (naturally).

OP posts:
MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:38

Not sure what was wrong with a good old fashioned "haha"

Saltatrix · 24/03/2011 14:38

It's not really a cue for you to laugh it's them telling you they laughed but it's become so diluted that people type 'lol' for pretty much anything that they find or think should be slightly amusing.

steps101 · 24/03/2011 14:38

YOMANK.

AMumInScotland · 24/03/2011 14:39

It's not telling you that you ought to LOL, it means that the writer is LOLling (though in reality they probably aren't!)

Iwantscallops · 24/03/2011 14:40

I hate it.

What anoys me even worse is one fb friend writes; "had a lovely day with dd xxx. She looked so cute xxx. Even went down the slide by herself xxx."

There are kisses everywhere and it drives me crazy!

Olessaty · 24/03/2011 14:41

I want to post the WoW ROFLMAO song now.

carminaburana · 24/03/2011 14:42

It's annoying / someone I know on F/B uses it a lot - I've told her to stop but she just can't - habit I guess

MeRightYouWrongMeBigYouSmall · 24/03/2011 14:42

typing lol at the end of each statement signifies (to me) that the person typing it is joking/smiling saying it in a jovial way.

withagoat · 24/03/2011 14:43

the KISSES thing makes me barf

this is new
and i HJATE it

MeRightYouWrongMeBigYouSmall · 24/03/2011 14:43

Iwantscallops, you must be one of my friends xxx

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:43

And what is all this,,,,,,,about?

One of my friends on facebook - I swear she must have been daydreaming for her entire school life - cannot spell even the simplest of words (she is not dyslexic) and all her status updates are littered with lol and,,,,,,,,,,

WTF?
