Sorry but I don't. If I genuinely find you funny then I will laugh, without a cue.

Admittedly I got confused for months when I first thought it simply meant 'lots of love', I thought the world had gone all love liberal Blush

Are there other meanings I simply haven't got?

Awful. Can't bear it.

Driftwood999 · 24/03/2011 14:45

I thought it meant "lots of love" as well, all a bit to glib for my taste but I do see it has its' place. Can anyone tell me what pmls is? I may have got a couple of letters the wrong way round! I hope I don't come across as "stern" but I was always trained to avoid jargon and abbreviations, on the grounds that is excludes some people. Therefore that would not be in the spirit of Mumsnet ifyswim if you see what I mean?

Iwantscallops · 24/03/2011 14:46

Hope I didn't offend you MeRight xxx, but it just makes my teeth xxx itch xxx!

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:47

pmsl - is pissing myself laughing

Not quite sure when myself got split into two words....Hmm

MeRightYouWrongMeBigYouSmall · 24/03/2011 14:47

lol Iwantscallops

Grin
SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:49

PMSL is piss myself laughing. But I had to look it up!

I just think if you have to litter LOL everywhere to show that you are writing jovially then perhaps you should develop your words to reflect your mood. Yes I'm old fashioned, I hate 'text speak' and stuff and I don't mind others using abbreviations but not everywhere for little reason.

Iwantscallops - teeth itch is exactly it!

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:51

What is marginally worse is lol jk, which I think translates to Laugh out loud, joke.

I'm sure there's a contradiction in terms in there somewhere.

SenoritaViva · 24/03/2011 14:52

aaah MrsRR, really? You have just made my life worse at it's existence. Yes, this is exactly what I hate. If you make a joke make it funny enough not to point out. AAAAAAHHHHHHH

I am promoting MAS
Mildly amused smirk

Saltatrix · 24/03/2011 14:54

People use 'lol' as an equivalent for 'and'

To be honest if in doubt just chuck in a 'lol' it's basically used for anything.

Driftwood999 · 24/03/2011 14:56

Thanks for the translation!

MrsRyanReynolds · 24/03/2011 14:56

"People use 'lol' as an equivalent for 'and'"

Please someone explain to me how anyone could mix the two up?

FoofffyShmoofffer · 24/03/2011 14:59

Bella I will see your MAS (mildly amused smirk) and raise you a CROE (cynically raising one eyebrow).

wonkeydonkies · 24/03/2011 15:00

i say lol in my mind sometimes when thinking of something amusing

lol

pithtaker · 24/03/2011 15:06

I much prefer 'arf', lol xxxx

BertieBotts · 24/03/2011 15:09

What about the Radio 1 one they had - ROFLSHMSFOAILMT

Rolling on the floor laughing so hard I my sombrero fell off and I dropped my taco

?

TotemPole · 24/03/2011 15:33

I put LOL if I genuinely laugh out loud.

It is when someone writes there own words and laughs at them.

I do that if I'm laughing at myself for being stupid, dozy, slow to get something and eventually realise my own stupidity.

southeastastra · 24/03/2011 15:53

blimey what a miserable op

lol

MmeLindt · 24/03/2011 16:00

Agree. Acceptable when not overused, and to show amusement at something that someone else has posted.

Not acceptable when used as punctuation, and just plain sad when used to show that poster is laughing at their own joke.

I hate: lol, pmsl, rofl (when used as above) too many !!!!!! and

carminaburana · 24/03/2011 16:03

Pithtaker ( love the name btw ) 'arf' is a million x worse than lol - it doesn't matter how much I've Liked their posts, if I see someone use that vulgarism I go right off them - and they forever remain a twit in my eyes.

  • also. anyone who types 'simples' - I could throw them off a bridge.
Pagwatch · 24/03/2011 16:05

I love arf.

Happy to be considered a twit.

Arf.

Pinkjenny · 24/03/2011 16:07

Can't stand lol. Just looking at the 'word' makes me irritable.

doutzen · 24/03/2011 16:09

My SIL uses it when she's said something she knows is awful.
"Seriously hate my FIL, he's a right wanker. LOL."
"Didn't you see I put 'lol' I was just joking."
She wasn't joking at all, I don't see how putting a 'LOL' after something makes it acceptable.

She's not the only one to do this either, it's not rare to see it on fb
