to think that 35 is not middle-aged

vic77en · 24/03/2011 11:07

My colleague yesterday referred to someone as middle-aged. When I said they weren't middle aged, were maybe early-mid thirties, he said that 35 was middle-aged.

I guess technically it's half of the "3 score years and 10" but FFS life expectancy for a woman is 80-something, no?

I am 34 and do not feel ready to be middle-aged for at least another 10 years.

So when do you think "middle-age" starts?

For me, as a 43 yr old, middle age is when you start looking forwards to your old age Grin

JaxTellersOldLady · 24/03/2011 11:10

I bloody hope 35 isnt middle aged! Shock

I still feel YOUNG! ... mostly.

squeakytoy · 24/03/2011 11:10

I would say late 50's is middle aged really.

AbsDuCroissant · 24/03/2011 11:11
Shock

35 is not middle aged because then I'm 6 years away from it

I plan on living to at least 100, so in that case middle aged would be around 50

NormanTheForeman · 24/03/2011 11:12

35 is positively young! (Well it is to someone of 49 like myself Wink).

DarrellRivers · 24/03/2011 11:16

I think it is technically
Youth 0-35
Middle 35-70
Old age 70-100

You , however as old as you feel

DarrellRivers · 24/03/2011 11:17

some definitions for you

Kosmik · 24/03/2011 11:20

Your colleague is being silly and immature, trying to put a label on you. If he wants to label himself as middle-aged when he is 34 and act all 'middle-aged' then thats up to him but I'm sure he will see things differently when that time comes!

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 24/03/2011 11:21

Jeez - I am 40 in just over a week and I am so not ready to be middle aged!!!!

I reckon I will live to 120 so I wont be middle aged till I am 60!!

lesley33 · 24/03/2011 11:22

I think about 40/early 40's.

One of the shocking things about getting older though is realising life expectancy is based on an average i.e. lots of people live longer than average life expectancy, but lots of people live a lot less as well.

I have now known a number of people who have died aged between 44 and 59 years of age. Some lived very unhealthily so you could see why they died young. But some have just been very very unlucky e.g. friend who is 42 and has terminal cancer.

Sorry to do a depressing post.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 24/03/2011 11:24

I'm not middle aged I am NOT!!

Middle aged people are ones who are at least 20 years older than me (I'm 36 next month).

So ner

sue52 · 24/03/2011 11:25

I'm 59 and I don't think I've hit it yet. Maybe 70 is the new 35.

capricorn76 · 24/03/2011 11:26

I think technically 35 is middle aged. sorry.

DarrellRivers · 24/03/2011 11:26

Middle age is BEFORE old age
It is probably at 40

vic77en · 24/03/2011 11:35

Phew, majority seem to agree I won't suddenly hit "middle-age" next birthday.

Yes, colleague is totally immature and silly, although he can't be too far off 35 himself I think he still has to hit adolescence....

wondering if I can hold-off onset of middle-age 'til mid-50's

NadiaWadia · 24/03/2011 11:39

40 must be middle age. Isn't average life expectancy about 80 now?

30s is not though.

I am in my 40s. It doesn't really bother me.

peanutbutterontoast · 24/03/2011 11:40

mid/late 50s - people aren't elderly until they hit their late 70s/80. No way could someone in their 30s be described as middle aged!

Geocentric · 24/03/2011 11:43

I'll be 39 soon. I don't expect to hit "middle-aged" until my 50's, at least... Grin

Actually, with more people active (and working!) for longer, I think "middle-aged" is obsolete. Should be:

Adolescence - until 30 (well, lots of people seem to act like it!!)
Adulthood - until around 70
Village Elder - from then on

lesley33 · 24/03/2011 11:43

I think there are 2 definitions of middle age. The 1st is the purely technical one on half way through your life expectancy - about 40. The second is about people acting in a stereotypically middle age way - anywhere from 20 to 80 years old depending on the person.

vintageteacups · 24/03/2011 11:45

Yep - I too think it's around 50.

I'm 33 and devastated about being 34 later this year. Only seems like 5 mins ago I was 12!!!

Defo 35 is not middle aged.

Lucylu5 · 24/03/2011 11:48

No not middle aged.....am convincing myself as well as you!! Am 36 and have decided I'm not going to be middle aged for quite a while yet!

ChaoticAngelofAnarchy · 24/03/2011 11:48

I'm 39 and definitely not middle aged Shock

Mind you, my dd thinks I'm positively ancient HmmGrin

DrNortherner · 24/03/2011 11:50

I am 35 this year and NOT MIDDLE AGED.

Isn't middle aged more a state of mind then a number? I know some people in theit twenties who are positivley middle aged and some folk in their 50/60's who have ayoung out look.

Bramshott · 24/03/2011 11:51

I suppose it depends on whether you see 'middle aged' as a negative term. Statistically, late-30s probably is the start of middle age, but in terms of using the phrase 'middle-aged' to describe someone who's a bit stuck in their ways and cruising downhill to retirement it's not very helpful! I'm 36 and sometimes describe myself as middle-aged, but usually as a semi-joke.

IntergalacticHussy · 24/03/2011 11:53

YANBU
