Just happened upon the last one and liked it, so ...

I don't think The King's Speech is that great a film; I think the directing was often unimaginative, cliched and banal and the script obvious. And Helena Bonham Carter wasn't that good.

I use Nestle products because boycotting them is just too much work

usualsuspect · 21/03/2011 19:49

Si si it is pretty laid back!!

allsquare I like FB too Grin

Psammead · 21/03/2011 20:24

What area of linguistics did you focus on? Don't mean to pry, it's just so seldom that I meet another linguistics nut Grin

MardyBra · 21/03/2011 20:30

I like linguistics Smile

Goblinchild · 21/03/2011 20:34

I have two linguistic loons in my family, like father like daughter. Scrabble is a blood sport in this household.

MardyBra · 21/03/2011 20:36

I would like to see Pedants' Corner renamed as Linguists' Lounge.

Goblinchild · 21/03/2011 20:37

My linguists lounge rather too often for my liking. Esoteric conversation and witty quips don't get the washing up done.

Psammead · 21/03/2011 20:39
Grin

My masters was in historical linguistics. I was never a grammar nut although I find that and phonetics interesting. Sociolinguistics was my second favourite area. I think historical sociolinguistics would be my idea of heaven Grin

I am a total onomastics nut too, I took that to honours and now persue it as a hobby.

What are you into?

MardyBra · 21/03/2011 20:41

Not as qualified as you - will PM you as try not to out myself on here.

Goblinchild · 21/03/2011 20:41

I like my literature whole and magnificently yummy, not sliced and diced into little phonetic packages with their roots all exposed and dissected. Grin

Psammead · 21/03/2011 20:42

I was about to apologise for derailing the thread but then I realised admitting to a love of the Great Vowel Shift and names is probably about as unpopular opinion as you're likely to hear Grin

NotaMopsa · 21/03/2011 20:44

Mine's a MN related offering

i cant stand 'get's popcorn'
i loathe 'so shoot me'
when people come on a thread and say 'what Andy32 says' i want to box their ears
i do not like sweary names - naffola

oh and Eternal Sunshine was awful

aliciasilverstone · 21/03/2011 20:49

I can't STAND -
'preens'

and I think people who home educate are selfish and denying their kids the normalcy of a school education, and said kids are usually weird.

also, people who deliberately choose to only have one child are selfish.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 21/03/2011 20:52

Dammit, I 'preen'ed earlier! First time I've ever used it and shall live to regret it! Grin

MardyBra · 21/03/2011 20:55

Is one allowed to twirl?

Agree with the "what soandso says" thing. If you have nothing new to add then say nothing!

NotaMopsa · 21/03/2011 20:56

excuse my stray apostrophe in gets Confused

Psammead · 21/03/2011 21:00

I don't mind that someone voices their agreeing, I mind the fact that I am nosey about what they are agreeing about and try to find the post, which breaks the flow of the thread.

My most unpopular MN opinion is that we should have both an edit and quote function. I have already received the bashing of a lifetime for suggesting those, so feel I have nothing to lose in saying that Grin

Psammead · 21/03/2011 21:01

Err. Voices their agreeing? Me no speaka the english.

NotaMopsa · 21/03/2011 21:07

or even 'hear hear' at least it sounds educated

thelambliesdown · 21/03/2011 21:11

Cuntrycountry and western is the work of the devil

YouTry · 21/03/2011 21:13

Except when it's spelled "here here" obviously

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 21/03/2011 21:21

Psammead · 21/03/2011 21:30
