to consider calling the police about my drink driving neighbour

i have posted on here before aout my neighbour. he has a drink problem and drinks at least a bottle of bells a day. i have tried to help him but as he has no intention of helping himself i am at a loss.
yesterday i was outside the front door of our appartments and he came stumbling out. he tripped over his own feet and fell flat on his face. it took him a while to pick him self up and when he did he stumbled down the steps and into his car. he drove to the local shops and bought another ottle of bells.

i feel that i should have called the police and repoerted him but i didnt. he does this daily.

Shock he does this every day? If you don't report him YABVU. I loathe drink drivers with a special super loathing.
Would it kill him to buy seven at a time to save the daily trip?

IMissSleep · 17/03/2011 08:13

Yes 100%!

He could kill himself or someone else. Its insane.

Bloodymary · 17/03/2011 08:14

You should definatly report!!!
He could kill/maim somebody.
It was not like he had had an extra glass of wine over dinner (not that I am condoning that)!
the police will have to catch him in the act tho.

FourFortyFour · 17/03/2011 08:14

Why on earth did you not ring the police?

He could kill an innocent person never mind himself.

IMO you have a duty to report him.

Newbeginning1 · 17/03/2011 08:14

YANBU, you should absolutely report him. You would feel worse if he killed himself or someone else.

Punkatheart · 17/03/2011 08:15

A friend of mine was killed by a drunk driver - tomorrow would have been his birthday. You do have a responsibility to report him - getting in a car while drunk makes that vehicle a weapon that could very easily mow down one of our children.

I know it is hard but as you say, you have tried to help. He needs a huge wake up call.

mumdrivenmad · 17/03/2011 08:17

OMFG yes report I've brought up this issue before because I too was dithering, I won't do it again, Mumsnet posters made me see the light about me pussyfooting, and this is so much worse.

Fuchzia · 17/03/2011 08:17

Yes I think you should I had a friend who was killed in simlar circumstances years ago. She was walking to school and mown down by an alcoholic who 'thought he had hit a sheep' and drove off on to a shop to buy 3 bottles of spirits.

It was awful. Please report him.

M44 · 17/03/2011 08:19

You must report him. Make sure you have the registration no of his car to hand, plus address. There used to be a special hotline you could report anonomously to-might be worth checking your local police website for details.

As a neighbourhood- we reported someone very similar to your neighbour and he lost his licence. He continued to drive so we reported him again-was prosecuted. Caught again and he went to prison. Very sad as they are ill, they have an addiction, BUT worse still would be serious injury or death to a child.

It is not nice or a comfortable thing to do....but just think worst case scenario and you will find yourself picking up the phone. Go on.....

pud1 · 17/03/2011 08:20

i am pissed off with myself for not reporting it tbh. he has been banned once so i dont think that it would make him realise at all. i worry aout him coming round the corner while i am getting the kids out of the car.

what should i do now. shall i wait untill he goes out again and call the police.

M44 · 17/03/2011 08:21

.....or anyone.

Please phone today.

GypsyMoth · 17/03/2011 08:24

He probably hasn't even got a licence to drive if he's been Banned previously as it's usually a case of doing an extended re test to get the licence back.

Report

And give reg number.......he will also be un insured I expect!

iscream · 17/03/2011 08:25

Someone I know recently reported her own son, because he was having frequent seizures, but still driving. If she could do that, you can do this. It is important.

IMissSleep · 17/03/2011 10:50

Call your local police station NOW and tell them what you saw. They will deal with it, its very serious. Stupid man.

Don't be pissed off with yourself. Its not you who's drink driving!

moonstonezoe · 17/03/2011 10:52

Ring crime stoppers, you can do this anonymously

bupcakesandcunting · 17/03/2011 10:52

I have only read your thread title. It's all I need to know to tell you YANBU to report him. If someone went out armed with a shotgun with the intention to kill, you'd be on the blower to the police. No different when someone goes out drunk, driving a car. They are going to kill someone eventually.

cherrychoo · 17/03/2011 10:55

crime stoppers, its anon.....google for the number.

what if he hits some one?

getoffme · 17/03/2011 10:56

i know somwone with a drinking problem, i didn't know he drived until he told me he was being prosecuted, she run down an old lady, she was in hospital and they were waiting to see if she die to charge him accordingly, got a custodial sentence.

poopnscoop · 17/03/2011 10:58

Phone the police!!!!!!!!

HipHopopotomus · 17/03/2011 10:58

please report him!

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 17/03/2011 11:06

Def report him and soon before he kills some innocent person!

slowshow · 17/03/2011 11:20

Oh my god. I wouldn't even hesitate to ring the police. Please do it.

BetsyBoop · 17/03/2011 11:37

I wouldn't even give it a second's thought, just report him before he kills someone.

YANBU

flyinstar · 17/03/2011 11:38

bllody hell, yes you should call the police before he kills someone.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 17/03/2011 11:40

Call the police. As soon as he gets in the car. He WILL kill someone eventually. Do you want that on your conscience?
