Yes I would judge someone whos house is less than perfect to have an interesting life.

I remember my mother being very fussy, she had to plump the cushions on the sofas before she could leave the house.

I hate new furniture, modern houses, shiny surfaces, it just all smacks of "look at me" and it's dreary and false.

I have a home, not a show house, it's warm, full of books and a life time of clutter, inherited furniture and bald rugs but I love it and 9 out of 10 visitors seem to like it too, well they keep coming back anyway!

I am completely in agreement LeQueen. My friends love coming here to be pampered and to destress because it's a clean, calm home, albeit one with many books (in bookcases), paintings and mismastched furniture. Keeping things clean makes them appear smarter and negates the need for constand updating, they just look lived in and loved, rather than neglected and battered.

I have a friend who's house is of a similar size and spec to mine and she moans that visitors don't compliment her on it. They can't see her house for all the shit, there is stuff everywhere, dirty clothes on the sofa, black bin bags in the kitchen, food trod in to tiles, empty loo rolls all over the bathroom, just awful. I never visit now, it makes me feel dirty and harrassed.

Chaotic house, chaotic mind. Tranquil doesn't mean you have a dull life, it means you value your life and down time so much you make an effort to enjoy it to the full.

I judge Grin

LeQueen - please can I come and stay?!

My house is a tip, never seem to know where to start with 3 dc's so I go out most of the day as it depresses me.

I do judge people if it's filthy so worry that people judge me too!

A bit of clutter is fine but I love going to my friends tidy houses.

Daisydreamer · 18/03/2011 12:59

Oh, but I bake :o

I feel uncomfortable in clean houses but that is because it makes mine look bad. I clean the bathroom everyday, but I dont do the walls (mould) or doors, I hoover and mop daily but my floors are filthy within 5 minutes (two young DC and a dog), my windows are smeared moments after cleaning them, and I have alot of toys and clutter but it is my home and my nan who has a spotless home is always moaning I should stop playing with my DC and do more cleaning but reading this thread I feel much better.

valiumredhead · 18/03/2011 13:20

I keep a tidy house and always have even when I worked FT. Little and often, that is the way to keep on top of things ( oh and a utility room where you can bung all the everyday crap you don't want seen Wink)

I don't judge anyone else, but I am happier living in a tidy house, I don't seem to be able to think straight otherwise. I don't even see other people's mess - if it's not mine it doesn't get picked up by my radar.

perfumedlife · 18/03/2011 13:22

I confess I work only part time, and from home. But, I really do enjoy my home so love to care for it and keep it fresh. Even when ds was little, the bathrooms/sitting room/dining room don't need to have toys/evidence of kids around all the time.

I love nice candles lit every day, fresh roses in the rooms, clean bedding twice a week {500tc}, heaps of clean white towels and throws, good coffee and soothing surroundings. Basically, I want the hotel experience at home, every day, so why not have it? I still let ds make a mess, only I tidy it away when he is finished.

Messy friend was living in a tip before she has her ds, then blamed her ds, now she is a Sahm and her boy is at nursery, she has run out of excuses. Even if you work full time, you can have a clean, tidy home every day if you value it and want it enough.

yes I do clutter big time. Its partly this business of not really wanting to throw things away.

veg2grow · 18/03/2011 14:27

I have a very tidy house but I don't bake birthday cakes!

I also would never judge anybody on having an untidy home but if it's DIRTY ie where your feet stick to the carpet like one house was I will never go back!

Everybody has different tolerance levels and mine in my own home is very low. I am guilty of hoovering and mopping after my cleaner has been! Need tablets yes I know

Blush Disregard all i have said, never baked a cake in my life, well, I did a banana loaf last year but so easy it can't count.

Shop bought birthday cakes all the way, but I do this party at home sometimes.

Sinkingfeeling · 18/03/2011 16:37

My sister's kitchen is tidy and immaculately clean. Her utility room on the other hand ... I so wish I had a utility room.

Grin Yes LeQueen, it's starting to sound like you do.

Whereas, I have been known to spray polish on the radiators to give the sense of the house being 'done' when mum is on the way over. No matter how lovely, I cannot make it just so like she does.

CheerfulYank · 18/03/2011 18:31

Perhaps :)

I am very disorganized naturally, so I find I have to be all that much more organized to make do. If that makes any kind of sense!
