To think breast fed babies are more intellegent

thecatamongthepidgeons · 13/03/2011 19:52

Because their parents tend to be more intellegent not because they were breast fed?
More intellegent parents are more likely to choose to breast feed regardless of any dificulties they face if they think it will benefit their children.

"I know which one I'd go for every time, as I think it's the latter that will make you more successful in life." would you grubbalo even if you had suffered the horrors that some people had described on this thread, the point is that some people do not have the choice so this tosh is spitefull to them.

foofy so well put-the cursory nod-love it.

Grin
ledkr · 15/03/2011 22:12

sorry meant northern gobshite-see you got me doing it now.

grubbalo · 15/03/2011 22:14

ledkr - please read my post again - I was saying I would choose social skills over 4 extra IQ points every time - jeez the whole point of my post was that I really can't get myself worked up over something that has no impact on my life

So if you choose to bf your baby, ff it or for that matter give it bottles of coke then I really don't care (well I guess I would about the coke Grin)

And there we go, the insults start again. Well have fun being nasty to each other, I'm off. It is nice to see though that in between the nastiness there are some decent people out there who are able to make a point without belittling other people's choices.

Night!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 15/03/2011 22:30

Spudulika - the reason that I have shared my painful story on this thread is not because of "..... self-pity and self-justification, competitive suffering,...." - it is because I think it is very important that people understand why this is such a sensitive subject - and a painful one - for women like me, so that the pros and cons of breastfeeding and formula feeding can be discussed in a way that doesn't make women like me feel even more shit than we already feel.

"..... self-pity and self-justification, competitive suffering........." - that stands out as a particularly offensive and nasty remark - quite a feat on this thread. Hmm

ledkr · 15/03/2011 22:43

gosh i didnt read that one staying what a fantastic way of illustrating what we have been trying to say on here, that deserves a great big Biscuit

foxytocin · 16/03/2011 02:14

"THAT was the other name I meant to add to the list. Foxytocin."

Grin Grin Grin next thing I know you have a spreadsheet somewhere.

get a life.

bye y'all happy flame war.

scottishmummy · 16/03/2011 08:17

see the usual bf zealots battering out quasi-science as if irrefutable fact and usual aggro that formula is chemical soup

and more shockingly some of these bf "supporters" actually get to engage with mums. good grief i hope you are not as strident and verbose in rl as on mn.hope you also receive adequate supervision and mentoring

ledkr · 16/03/2011 10:07

s.m. Grin where have you been?

total aside, but one of my colleagues based in China always used to write to me and ask for a copy of the "spread shit" (she genuinely thought that was what they were called). Never failed to amuse me (but maybe I'm just childish).

Scottishmummy, not all of us who are very pro breastfeeding are zealots, I promise....

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 16/03/2011 11:37

Hobnobs - I think I am right in saying that there are several mumsnetters who claim to have spreadsheets of us - different nicknames etc, real names where they know them - so they can keep track of who's who.

I don't have a spreadsheet. Sadly neither do I have a memory, so I blunder around forgetting everyone and everything.

Spudulika · 16/03/2011 11:43

"see the usual bf zealots battering out quasi-science as if irrefutable fact and usual aggro that formula is chemical soup"

Nobody has said or implied that formula is a chemical soup.

Re: quasi-science - if the information I've referred to in support of breastfeeding is seen as reliable by the Royal College of Midwives, UNICEF, the WHO and the NHS I'm happy to put my trust in it.

Who do you put your trust in when it comes to information about whether a product you're giving your child as their sole food for the first 6 months of their life is safe and healthy and doesn't put them at increased risk of illness?

I'd certainly put more trust in information coming from reputable public bodies than I would in any commercial companies or from anyone who has a vested financial or emotional interest in downplaying the disadvantages and risks of using infant formula.

As for looking for cast-iron 'proof' on the issue of infant feeding and IQ - we all know that babies' brains are growing very fast in the first year of life. We also know that formula is nutritionally inferior to breastmilk. Would anyone here like to point me in the direction of good quality, peer reviewed research which shows that there are no differences in IQ or general health between ff and exclusively breastfed babies?

StayingDavidsTennantsGirl - with respect, if your feelings on this subject are so raw and sensitive, isn't coming repeatedly onto a thread like this and allowing yourself to become upset by people's comments a bit like picking a scab? Why do you do it? If the comments are so contemptible why bother to respond? We know you are devastated about your experience of breastfeeding because you have described your feelings at length and repeatedly - possibly in hope of shaming me and other posters into stopping saying things about breastfeeding that make you feel guilty, angry or hurt. But I don't want to withdraw from what I see as an interesting debate because of your feelings. If it hurts you, stop reading.

Spudulika - as I have said several times, the reason why I have spoken about my experiences and feelings is to persuade posters like you of the need to tackle this subject carefully and with tact, NOT to get people to withdraw from the debate.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 16/03/2011 12:12

And I do think it is a tad ironic that you tell me to stay away from this thread in the same paragraph as accusing me of wanting others to withdraw from the debate!

SDTG is a little way down the line from her own experiences. Others may be right in the middle of them, or still very, very distressed.

It is quite right, and she is to be applauded for having the courage to share her own experiences in a desperate (and unfortunately futile) attempt to try to get others to approach this sensitive topic without the bull-in-a-chinashop, or quite frankly spiteful, approach that some posters seem to think it is their right and duty to take.

comeandsitbythefire · 16/03/2011 13:04

'formula is nutritionally inferior to breast milk'

The government would not allow for the only alternative to breast milk to be nutritionally inferior but rather the best alternative for those that need it.

Blush

Well said CSBTF

My first posts on this thread were lighthearted - as the OP is just do ridiculous!! - but as it has gone on some of the posts from the BFers have crossed a line...you know who you are!

I suppose I posted about my experiences because it might help another mum in the same/similar situation or might make them feel better about FF.

I dont post to discriminate, undermine and upset.

Unlike some of the posters on here, obviously.
