"see the usual bf zealots battering out quasi-science as if irrefutable fact and usual aggro that formula is chemical soup"
Nobody has said or implied that formula is a chemical soup.
Re: quasi-science - if the information I've referred to in support of breastfeeding is seen as reliable by the Royal College of Midwives, UNICEF, the WHO and the NHS I'm happy to put my trust in it.
Who do you put your trust in when it comes to information about whether a product you're giving your child as their sole food for the first 6 months of their life is safe and healthy and doesn't put them at increased risk of illness?
I'd certainly put more trust in information coming from reputable public bodies than I would in any commercial companies or from anyone who has a vested financial or emotional interest in downplaying the disadvantages and risks of using infant formula.
As for looking for cast-iron 'proof' on the issue of infant feeding and IQ - we all know that babies' brains are growing very fast in the first year of life. We also know that formula is nutritionally inferior to breastmilk. Would anyone here like to point me in the direction of good quality, peer reviewed research which shows that there are no differences in IQ or general health between ff and exclusively breastfed babies?
StayingDavidsTennantsGirl - with respect, if your feelings on this subject are so raw and sensitive, isn't coming repeatedly onto a thread like this and allowing yourself to become upset by people's comments a bit like picking a scab? Why do you do it? If the comments are so contemptible why bother to respond? We know you are devastated about your experience of breastfeeding because you have described your feelings at length and repeatedly - possibly in hope of shaming me and other posters into stopping saying things about breastfeeding that make you feel guilty, angry or hurt. But I don't want to withdraw from what I see as an interesting debate because of your feelings. If it hurts you, stop reading.
