To think wearing shoes indoors is disgusting?

I have a 'No shoes worn in the home' rule at my own house but I have noticed that a lot of people are not fussed if peps walk into their houses with their shoes on. Why do they allow this?

Last night when I arrived at my mum's, she ordered me not to enter the living room, as she had accidentially trod dog poo through the room and was busy scrubbing the floor. All because she bizzrely wears her shoes in her home. How hard is it to take your shoes off in the hallway, once you get home?

I tried to hide my annoyance as it is her home, but I wouldn't allow DD to crawl about on the floor. The room stunk of poo and i felt sick.

If you wear shoes at home do you spend a lot of time there, getting various things done? If you wear slippers at home are you out most of the time and so when you're at home you're mainly on the sofa? I'm sure there are exceptions but just wondering if this tends to be true or not...

lesley33 · 12/03/2011 11:41

I am often very busy at home. Although much less in last month since I have joined mumsnet! I'm not a great fan of slippers and don't watch much tv. So this is the case for me - shoes on person.

prettybird · 12/03/2011 11:42

The "shoes off" people wouldn't be able to do Flylady. One of her key tenents for getting organised is "to get dressed to your shoes" - and by shoes, she means lace-ups.

Her explanation on "why shoes? and especially lace-upshoes?"

MistyValley · 12/03/2011 11:59

Actually I think that's a really good point about not having shoes on at home, it makes you want to put your feet up! Which is fine obviously, unless you need to get anything done.

diddl · 12/03/2011 12:46

From Flylady-

"I see this problem more in the SAHM (Stay At Home Moms) because often they don't have to leave the house and it is not necessary to get dressed every morning."

Oh yes, I don´t go out to work so I don´t get dressed.

Good grief-do people really think that?

And I don´t need shoes on to get the work done in the house that I need to!

Reasons I wouldn't just wear socks/slippers around the house

Crumbs stuck to feet
Slipping on wooden floors/steps/ladders
Getting wet feet from washing-up spills
Cleaning products dropped on feet/slippers
Stepping on a prickly doormat
Stubbing toes on furniture
Not able to just pop out to the shed/bin/garden
Stepping on something hard by mistake
Pet hair stuck to socks if you have pets

PepsiPopcorn · 12/03/2011 13:54

(yes I do sweep up the crumbs but you still have to walk across the room to get the brush!)

Greenshadow · 12/03/2011 15:16

I compromise.

I wear (sort of) sandals that I keep for indoors.
No problem with stepping on something hard or prickly door mats or slipping on wooden floors.

Only one of your issues that fits Pepsi is the popping out to shed etc.

I expect all children (ours and others) to remove their shoes but never have to ask them as they all do it automatically.
I don't expect adult visitors to do it but most of our generation do ask out of politeness.

mollymoomalone · 12/03/2011 15:27

So working class!!! - asking people to take their shoes off - its ridiculous.

MistyValley · 12/03/2011 15:41

Greenshadow - go on, admit it, they're Crocs, aren't they Wink

doley · 12/03/2011 17:26

There is ZILTCH wrong with being working class ...your comment is ridiculous .

mathanxiety · 12/03/2011 18:25

Tis forrin too, Mollymoo. Hmm It's the norm all over eastern Europe and in Scandinavia, Canada...

Greenshadow · 12/03/2011 18:41

Misty - Hate to say it but .... No, actually they aren't Crocs but having tried my son's ones on last summer, am very tempted when I need to replace them!

PepsiPopcorn · 12/03/2011 19:02

They're more likely to have underfloor heating though aren't they mathanxiety? I'd need that if I wasn't wearing shoes :o Wonder whether no-shoe households use more heating?

QuickLookBusy · 12/03/2011 19:08

No, they don't need more heating pepsi because they often use something called a slipper.

Are you aware of them? Apparently you can even buy them in shoe shops and department stores.Smile

PepsiPopcorn · 12/03/2011 19:39

In the shoeless households I've visited people often wear socks (no slippers) and have the heating on too high...

MistyValley · 12/03/2011 19:42

Greenshadow - gwan, you know you want to they make good house shoes... Wink
