To think wearing shoes indoors is disgusting?

I have a 'No shoes worn in the home' rule at my own house but I have noticed that a lot of people are not fussed if peps walk into their houses with their shoes on. Why do they allow this?

Last night when I arrived at my mum's, she ordered me not to enter the living room, as she had accidentially trod dog poo through the room and was busy scrubbing the floor. All because she bizzrely wears her shoes in her home. How hard is it to take your shoes off in the hallway, once you get home?

I tried to hide my annoyance as it is her home, but I wouldn't allow DD to crawl about on the floor. The room stunk of poo and i felt sick.

AIBU?

Yes, YABU. I am not about to lick my carpet and oddly, none of my DC do either. Hmm

Plus, I have four dogs who do not have any shoes to take off when they come into my house and so there's no much point in asking people to take their shoes off really, is there?

I've got a carpet cleaner, it's not the end of the world.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 07/03/2011 20:47

I would not dream of asking my guests to remove their shoes, I do not think my floor is more important than their comfort.

vintageteacups · 07/03/2011 20:48

I don't feel awake until I've got my shoes on and as Fly Lady says : tie up your laces!

I don't like it when people tread muddy shoes through on the carpet but I couldn't ask adults to take them off.

I would ask kids to though - they're not always as aware if they're dirty.

I was asked by a french friend to take my shoes off (she didn't even have carpets) and luckily, I thought she might ask me, and so I had taken socks to cover my eczema covered feet! She told me I didn't need to put on socks (it was summer) but I felt I had to - my bare feet were in wrose condtion thatn my pretty ballet pumps Grin

Get over yourself!!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/03/2011 20:50

I don't like shoes indoors but disgusting? Really?

LemonDifficult · 07/03/2011 20:53

YABU

And completely ridiculous if you think this is 'disgusting'. You must lead a very narrow, sheltered and bizarrely sanitised life if your really do think that.

And certainly not one that involves animals or farming.

RJRabbit · 07/03/2011 20:54

I don't like getting my socks/feet dirty on other people's filthy floors.

CJ2010 · 07/03/2011 20:56

Goodness, some of you must live like pigs in shit. And, you are proud of the fact!!

Don't you think tho, that the outside, should stay outside?

Would you let someone bring a bicycle into your home?

I have to say tho in fairness, it never bothered me until I had my DD, who is now crawling about on the floor, but it seems that even with kids some of you carry on regardless.

I'm proud of my high standards of cleanliness, but it is interesting to hear other views points.

I prefer to 'live' in my house. Friends with shoes and all. Why choose flooring you're going to be so precious about? I love my house but it's a welcoming home too. There's no place for a communal slipper here.

RandyRussian · 07/03/2011 20:58

There are 2 sides to things like this. It's all well and good being super house-proud but I knew someone who was obsessive (sp) about no shoes being worn in her house and her hubby used to walk about barefoot.

Thing was he had dry skin and bits used to flake off so I was always worried about catching any fungal infection he might have had.

doley · 07/03/2011 20:58

We have a 'no shoe rule' here .

I wouldn't offer 'guest' slippers either (spent too much time in Japan dodging those )

If I have a guest who needs to keep them on for comfort ,I am very flexible though Wink

Most of my friends have this rule ,so I can keep my outfit complete I just bring my own little (in-door only ) ballet pumps .

TheVisitor · 07/03/2011 21:01

I have a bike in my hallway. :P I don't live like pigs in shit, thank you very much, I'm just not anal about hygiene. I was the same when my children were small, and they are very rarely ill as their immune systems have been able to develop properly. Dog shit shoes come off at the door, but that's different.

givemesomespace · 07/03/2011 21:02

OCD OCD OCD

colditz · 07/03/2011 21:04

The thing is about crawling children is that they don't continue to crawl throughout the rest of their lives, so you don't need to keep your floor sanitised at all times.

people with crawling children tend, IMHO, to forget this.

Mine are nearly five and eight. They don't lick the floor.

valleyqueen · 07/03/2011 21:05

Hardly pigs In shit they get swept and mopped over quickly most days. Then the cat might drag her bum across it :)

52Girls · 07/03/2011 21:05

Op, you are so right - of course! We're all scummy, dirty, pig in shit dwellers who couldn't care less.

No standards, me. Smile

You're never going to have pets are you OP? :(

52Girls · 07/03/2011 21:07

Op, do you have a 'feature wall'?

Just a hunch.

SeeJaneKick · 07/03/2011 21:07

Disgusting habit. ALL of DHs relatives do it...I have to tell them to tke them off and they're like Confused

But I won't have it.

PlasticLentilWeaver · 07/03/2011 21:14

What oxocube said!

CJ2010 · 07/03/2011 21:18

52Girls - No I don't have a 'feature' wall but I do have a clean house!! Lol. I may possibly suffer from OCD as someone so kindly pointed out, but I'm not naff.

I used to have a dog and cat but and much as I loved them, they did occasionally poo/puke indoors and I was ok with it. Like I said before, my views have changed since I had DD.
