McDonalds get this going on AIBU

No they should simply be selective in who they let advertise Round.

LaWeasel · 04/03/2011 18:37

It takes up more space. But it's a plant. The main benefit of the rainforest is in sheer plant numbers.

Cattle is hugely bad in that particular area because it erodes the forest floor causes flooding and the draining of nutrients from the soil. In that particular area, soya is better.

Although I know that soya in intself is not better than meat because of the quantities required.

BuzzLiteBeer · 04/03/2011 18:39

and mcdonalds not advertising here will achieve precisely....?

MilaMae · 04/03/2011 18:41

Is it really that difficult to have ethical advertising Hmm?

I'm sure many companies would like prime advertising space such as that pop up in my right hand corner and would pay plenty. Mcdonalds and Disney aren't the only big companies out there.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 18:42

Will put one tiny dint in McD's total world domination plans buzz...lots of tiny dints doth a bloody big dint make.

OP posts:
RoundOrangeHead · 04/03/2011 18:43

maybe it is difficult to be selective because otherwise they would just turn it down

MilaMae · 04/03/2011 18:44

It's what it'll achieve being on here not the other way round. It'll be such a coup for a company like that, can just see it now"Mumsnet endorsed".

Mcdonalds will make money and sell more of it's shite out of a mn campaign, thats why they want the slot.

glasnost · 04/03/2011 18:47

Jesus "MN endorsed". Can you imagine the kudos they'd get off the back of that? It's tantamount to saying Britain's thinking mums approve of McD's.

Don't do it MN!!!!!!!!!!! Don't take the McDollar.

OP posts:
RoundOrangeHead · 04/03/2011 18:50

MN certainly does not speak for me, thanks very much

Scuttlebutter · 04/03/2011 18:53

Oh, FFS. McDonalds advertising here will not mean they are "endorsed" by MN. Hmm

And for all those whining about rainforests, employment etc - just how perfect are otherr companies? Can we say that Boden know exactly how much their garment workers get paid and don't exploit anyone? Do Mark Warner holidays damage the environment? Disrupt local markets? These are just the two company ads I can see on hte page right now.

Why is it that it is always acceptable to bash McDonalds but not any other fast food company? Or indeed any other advertiser?

We live in a market economy, and MN's costs need to be met by advertising, so we all can use it free of charge.

I'm happy for any company that is legal in the UK to advertise here. As a grownup I can then choose whether to buy their goods or services or spit merrily at their junk food/ naff holidays/ dreadful hooray clothing.

Tizwoz · 04/03/2011 18:57

Oh, sorry glasnost, you lose this discussion forever for bringing up Hitler.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law

A point that I did bring up was to dispute the use of "apathy". I hate to reiterate myself, but since you seem to have glossed over it effortlessly enough to make me think you are being deliberately obtuse, I suggested that it was farcical to get so wound up about such a minor thing when there were more serious issues in the world.

Now, to save time and counter a point that would you'll obviously employ, no I don't think there is room for this sort of thing on AIBU. I believe you are vastly overestimating 1) the impact this advert will have, 2) the importance it has 3) there are more important, interesting and infuencing things going outside in the big wide world, and that you are doing it a big favour by giving it a never ending stream of publicity.

giveitago · 04/03/2011 19:39

It's just advertised - you don't have to eat there.

I've not idea who mcd is aimed at - really I don't but I took my ds for the first time ever and he seemed to like it. I'm pleased. But I didn't take him there because I saw an ad but took him there as I want to broaden his food horizons. I was pleased - he was pleased. But my god, the food IS shite isn't it. I had a cheese type burger - big - I was starving 20 mins later.

It's not value for money.

HecateQueenOfWitches · 04/03/2011 19:49

"Would you be happy to see an arms manufacturer advertising here?"

Nope.

But I'm not happy to see any advert. None of them please me.

I would feel the same way I feel about any ad.

I don't care.

Although I would wonder why mners were trading in uzi 9mms.

Brings whole new meaning to the term chucked about on here "millitant breastfeeders" Grin

or perhaps the p&t parking space thing has taken a disturbing turn...

bigbeagleeyes · 04/03/2011 19:54

Op., If you fill your car with petrol, shop in a supermarket, use any major electric/fuel provider, use any major phone network or internet provider you are buying into Corporate Britain.
And I would bet that most of them are unethical.
If you don't use any of the above I will agree with you about Macdonalds.
But I bet you do.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 19:54

i still don't think mcds should advertise on here

Trillian · 04/03/2011 19:55

I don't see any adverts but I don't think McDonalds is the worst thing in the world

Now I really want some chicken nuggets. So really, if you think about it, glasnost is actually driving people to increase mcDonalds profits by spreading all the McD talk around.

Better go cry into your allegedly fair-trade coffee, glasnost, its okay, nobody offline will know what you've done.

Panzee · 04/03/2011 20:15

What's your favourite dip with nuggets? I only pick ketchup because I don't like the others. I wish they did mayonnaise.

BuzzLiteBeer · 04/03/2011 20:19

I like sweet and sour. Or bbq, or occasionally curry, even, I'm not that picky. In Australia they used to do a honey mustard dip that was amazing.
I like the twisty fries too, with a choc milkshake. I haven't been in forever, theres none really close to us, so its a rare thing but I do like it the odd time.

Truffkin · 04/03/2011 20:19

I've tried to keep out of this bunfight debate but feel urged to say that McDonalds have been under huge pressure to clean up the way they do business and have actually made massive improvements in the last 10 years. They invest significant amounts into training and development for staff and actually have good graduate schemes, running alongside management training programmes for young people without a good education, to have a shot at a career. There are lots of other things and I agree with previous posters who have said that it is unreasonable to continue to judge a organisation based on events from 2 decades ago. I studied the McLibel case at uni and so many of the key issues are far less relevant today.

I also believe that if you (and by 'you' I mean anyone) put petrol in your car, you are contributing to a lot of the things complained about on this thread. Let's at least acknowledge that McDs are making efforts to improve their working practices.

Ohforfoxsake · 04/03/2011 20:21

I think that, by association, it will appear that MN are endorsing them indirectly. Yes we're all grown ups but Mcds are targeting us as patents. It's all about getting to the children.

If MN were comfortable with it on here they wouldn't feel the need to ask.

Advertising is an incredibly powerful medium. Which is why is makes so much money.

Given everyone on here is so sensible and wouldn't be swayed by advertising, bit pointless them wanting to advertise on here surely?

JeremyVile · 04/03/2011 20:21

Gawd save us from the numpties who can only muster an opinion if something is posted on AIBU.

I'm not overly keen on McDonalds advrtising here but it's more important to me that MN continues to operate and we are not the ones with the responsibility to make it work. MNQH did a good thing in asking our opinions. Lots of people have commented, and if there are posters who ahve no idea what goes on outside of this topic then they don't deserve to have a say anyway.

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 20:22

petrol doesn't make your kids fat and give them a taste for salty foods for the rest of their lives

nickytwotimes · 04/03/2011 20:23

yanbu glasnost. i've already posted on the original thread, but i do feel that this is a big enough deal to warrant more than one thread, given that far more trivial matters get several without anyone moaning about it.

i am also an old fashioned leftie. i can see i am well in the minority now on mn and i am really disappointed.

i have started a thread in chat looking for alternative sites if anyone has any suggestions. i won't stick around if mcds come. i don't expect anyone to be bothered by this, btw! I am not that arrogant. Grin but i wouldn't be comfortable. mccds is up there with nestle and coca cola.
