I think it is too hard to rehome an animal

I bought a puppy a few months ago and I really love him - he was the right choice for us. He cost £100.

He was vacc's and I will pay to have him castrated soon.

He has been such a success that I have been looking into getting him a companion. I would like to help a dog and rescue them but they want stupid amounts of money and loads of home vists.

I am just put off, and it is a shame because I could easily home another dog and give him a good life.

I think I will just buy another puppy I am afraid.

ahh - bugger - will have to scrabble around under the sofa looking for ones I've dropped wait until the morning then. I've got a shop on the corner open 8-11pm which is rather useful - but it's 3am and our 24hr Tesco is too far to make a mad dash like I do to the corenr shop Grin

OP - if this all happened 4 years ago why are you complaining now about the difficulty in rehoming a dog??

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 03:00

Baroque - as he is now part of the family, I would walk him and look after him but perhaps, like my kids, he might not get my full range of abilities.

But, as part of the family, he will get what I can give.

Although if I broke my arm now it would be a bad time to have a new kid or dog, don't you think?

What would you do?

so OP you haven't actually approached any rescues since you decided to get a chum for your puppy?

Vallhala · 03/03/2011 03:02

Give up or sleep? Can't decide which is favourite.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 03:03

Actually I think it would be better to get a dog when you've got a broken arm than to get one when you're broke........

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 03:03

BHF - of course not, I was asking for an opinion.

OP posts:
BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 03:28

there is nothing in your OP or your later posts that suggest you are asking an opinion on this. you say in your OP

"I would like to help a dog and rescue them but they want stupid amounts of money and loads of home vists.

I am just put off, and it is a shame because I could easily home another dog and give him a good life.

I think I will just buy another puppy I am afraid."

this sound like you have made your decision without even approaching any rescues to see if what you said was actually true.

DooinMeCleanin · 03/03/2011 08:08

My rescued puppy was free. I rescued her privately after being told she was going to be killed that night.

Except the next day she wasn't really free. Her bed cost £45, her food dishes £5, her puppy food £15, her first set of vax, flea treatment, wormer and microchip £65, her lead £10, collar £6, insurance £12 per month. And that is not even accounting for the ongoing cost of food, vax, wormer, flea treatment, insurance and the £150 we had to find at v short notice when she hurt her leg.

My other rescue dog was by donation of £40. By the end of the first month with us he had cost us near to £200 in vets fees for a skin condition.

My parents had two dogs they became unable to afford. One got very sick, very quickly. The charity vets could not fit them in for a week, They had to either find £130 for her to be pts, or watch her suffer in pain for a week Sad

If you cannot afford the adoption fee, you cannot afford to properly care for a dog. If you can't be arsed to allow 1 homecheck, you don't deserve a dog.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 03/03/2011 09:18

We've only ever had rescues and we only ever will. It makes a huge difference, even just rescuing one animal. I don't think there are any good breeders, not any more, it's all about money and not the love of the breed. Tacky in the extreme when there are so many animals who need loving homes.

A couple of hoops to jump and a donation... what's the problem, really?

You could also ask your local authority which kennels they use for strays - go directly there and get a dog, it won't cost you anything and you'll be actually doing something worthwhile.

BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 09:38

there are good breeders lyin. they are few and far between but they do exist and they are worth finding if a breeder is the way you are sure you want to go.

KnittedBreast · 03/03/2011 09:43

completly agree, they make it so difficult to rehome. I would just buy a puppy too

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 09:50

Knitted - have you read any of the thread???????

KnittedBreast · 03/03/2011 09:56

the first page- 15 pages is alot to read

coccyx · 03/03/2011 10:04

Lets hope you can be bothered with a puppys needs if you can't be arsed to read thread replies. Give it a few weeks.........

KnittedBreast · 03/03/2011 10:06

was that aimed at me? give what a few weeks

BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 10:25

i hope you don't knitted, considering what you have posted WRT dogs onsome other recent threads.

SuperHans · 03/03/2011 10:39

It's like saying you shouldn't have children if there are any children awaiting adoption in the world.

I think the adverts saying please give a dog a forever home are just nonsense.

I would definitely buy a puppy if I wanted another.

Why are they nonsense? My older dog was only 18 months old when I rescued him and was due to be pts as soon as the pound got too full. He now has a long and happy life ahead of him. I don't see what is nonsense about that. Same with the puppy. Her owners couldn't find anyone to buy her and couldn't be bothered to contact a rescue for her so they were going to drown her instead. She now ahs a long life ahead of her.

Your last post makes no sense.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 10:43

ermmm no it's not the same as saying you shouldn't have children if there are ones awaiting adoption Confused.

Though deliberately having a baby when broke is the same as getting dog (from any source) wehn you're broke.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 03/03/2011 10:44

LEroy - if you have a search further up the thread you'll see that some "Dogs Homes" are actually pounds and not rescue centres

BooyFuckingHoo · 03/03/2011 10:45

I'll stick to whatever i like my lovely. the topic is dogs, you have commented previously about dogs.

Leroy -

"Vallhala Thu 03-Mar-11 00:12:40
fifi, that sounds more like a pound than a rescue. With respect are you sure it was a rescue?

Some pounds call themselves rescues or "Dogs Homes" but are really council pounds. Battersea, Birmingham and Manchester "Dogs Homes" are all examples of this."

(thought I'd copy and paste for save you searching) Smile
