To get a catsbummouth over girls wearing short skirts as part of their uniform?

Was stuck in traffic near the local high school this morning and was a bit shocked at the number of girls wearing mini skirts (kind of half way up the thigh - does that count as mini?).

Seems a bit inappropriate to me and wouldn't let my DD dress that way when she gets to High School - or am I an old fart?

i'll bet they were knee length when they left home.

yep, mine was certainly adjustable Grin

YANBU, but good luck with your mission. I just know that DD will be rolling hers up once she starts at senior school.
DH used to teach at a school in Bangkok, it had a strict uniform policy. the worst example of abuse was a girl whose skirt barely covered her arse leaning over the transport dept. hatch and showing her thong [that's where a boak emoticon would come in useful]

Nancy66 · 02/03/2011 12:14

Oh, all schoolgirls do it. I did.

And, yes i used to roll mine up on the way to school....and then down again when I got home.

NettoSuperstar · 02/03/2011 12:15

Old fartGrin

I've already accepted that DD will wear short skirts, no matter what I say, and there's feck all I can do about it.

VinegarTits · 02/03/2011 12:15

did you never roll your wasteband up to make it shorter once you were out of sight of your house OP? i did Grin

Moodykat · 02/03/2011 12:16

I agree with AtYour, I was a skirt roller.

MooMooFarm · 02/03/2011 12:16

I didn't actually - I hated my 'skinny' legs way too much to show them to anyone - oh for those legs now [dreams on...]

Multiple length skirts - very useful. Longer when requiRed. Shorter when desired!!

Lol
They all do it at all types of school. DD goes to a formal school with a formal uniform and her skirt seems to have adjustable length too!

cantspel · 02/03/2011 12:17

we have a school nearby where the uniform is a blue pleated skirt than comes down to their calfs. Impossible to roll up but looks awful. No option of trousers either and i dont know of any pupil who likes the uniform.

FooffyShmoofffer · 02/03/2011 12:18

I remember hoiking mine up at the bus stop (a bit, not over me head or anything)Grin as did all the other girls.

I am now a MOB (TM). I judge this mode of dress and I judge the school for allowing it.

pumperspumpkin · 02/03/2011 12:19

Are they wearing thick tights? Ny DD isn't there yet but I'm fairly relaxed about the short skirts (particularly as rolling your skirt up is a bit of a rite of passage) if they are wearing opaques, it's not as though you can really see anything anyway.

And how nice to be young and to wear a short skirt without worrying about whether your thighs are wobbling. They might as well enjoy it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/03/2011 12:20

I believe it's Rugby School where the girls wear an almost full length skirt? That would require a whole lot of rolling!

MooMooFarm · 02/03/2011 12:22

So do they literally roll them up just to walk to school and then roll them down again when they get there? DS told me any girls with skirts above the knee get a lunchtime detention.

And no, one of the girls I saw had bare legs, and they were really pink with the cold! I had to lock the car doors to stop myself jumping out and wrapping a blanket around her!

YABU, actually.

when I was at school, your skirt had to be ankle-length or mini.
noone wore a skirt inbetween apart from the complete and utter saddoes.
I was a saddo, but i still had a proper length skirt.

it's a rite of passage as a teenager.

Abcinthia · 02/03/2011 12:26

I used to roll my skirt up and wore fishnet tights underneath. When the school complained they weren't in the school dress code, I wore long black socks instead with my rolled up skirt, which annoyed them even more Grin

the school near me with a long skirts is an all girls school. I watch them each morning at the train station trying to cop off/flirt with the boys who go to the near by all boys school.

PlanetEarth · 02/03/2011 12:32

Mid-thigh? Round here the skirts barely cover their bums!

MamaLazarou · 02/03/2011 12:33

YABU grandma. Teenagers are supposed to wear stuff we old fogies disapprove of.

AtYourCervix · 02/03/2011 12:34

the 6th form girls at the college here wear skirts which trail along the ground, they are always wet, muddy with ragged trailing, holey hems and are more vile than a short skirt.

jazz412 · 02/03/2011 12:35

I hitched mine up and tucked it under my bra!

DP's younger sister however goes for the roll it up - just makes her look like she has an extra roll... but apparently it's how all of the girls do it, weird really!

I'm fully prepared for my DD (if I have one) to do this, I might be catbumfaced at it but then I'll just have to remember that I was a rebellious teenage tease once...

pinkbraces · 02/03/2011 12:37

I love threads like this, I was the same as you OP and my daughter who is in first year of 6th form at a school which has a very strict uniform policy, for both lower school and 6th, she still rolls it up/pulls it up and generally tries to make it as short as possible.

In fact the girls have bets as to see how short they can get the skirt until they are told to pull it down!

Good luck to you OP :)

begonyabampot · 02/03/2011 12:38

Marlborough College, the girls skirts are all trailing on the ground - no legs in sight there.
