To get a catsbummouth over girls wearing short skirts as part of their uniform?

Was stuck in traffic near the local high school this morning and was a bit shocked at the number of girls wearing mini skirts (kind of half way up the thigh - does that count as mini?).

Seems a bit inappropriate to me and wouldn't let my DD dress that way when she gets to High School - or am I an old fart?

The local high school had such a problem with pelmet length skirts, that they changed their uniform policy a few years ago. Now everyone has to wear trousers.

that's the one begon. yuk.

Last summer I passed the bus stop neaest to our house to see to high school girls in bum skimming skirts, with the requisite scraggy comb over, one bleached blonde, one jet black, applying instant tan from a tube. They were sooo brown they looked grey IYSWIM.

I judged. I judged good and proper.

MooMooFarm · 02/03/2011 12:44

Don't get me started on the combover - is there not a point at which it becomes ridiculous??? God I feel even older now Sad

I used to go to s school where we had a hideous uniform that included a six-gore flarey skirt. All the first years had them, then obviously as you got older and grew then persuaded their mums to buy a normal skirt in subsequent years.

Well basically me and my mate were short arses (and my mum refused to buy another one whilst it still fitted) and i still had the same bloody skirt in year 4!!!

Me and my friend used to stop on the way to bus stop and actually sew the panels to take said skirt in as well as roll it up, EVERY day i did this!!

I agree that with opaques is ok. I only have ds's but i must remember not to nag them about wearing coats or whatever the uniform issue will be when they get to secondary!

I remember as a teacher pointing out to one of the girls that the crotch of her tights was hanging down below the level of her skirt. Nice.

A school near us has all pupils in trousers - problem solved. Don't know why they don't all do it. I don't like seeing young teenage girls with their backsides hanging out either.

nickelbabe · 02/03/2011 13:05

I can't wear trousers.
it makes me very uncomfortable.
i wore trousers once for school and i hated it.
i did feel like my arse was hanging out and visible for all to see.

sb6699 · 02/03/2011 13:14

Round here the schools make the girls wear ankle length skirts - the hems are wet and muddy in winter and the poor souls must be so uncomfortable when its warm.

YANBU about the short skirts (even though I did it at school!).

fatlazymummy · 02/03/2011 13:22

At my son's senior school the uniform is practically unisex. Everyone must wear trousers, shirt/blouse, tie and blazer. The only difference is a slight difference in the design of boys and girls blazers. Personally I see no need for girls to wear skirts at school at all.

TrillianAstra · 02/03/2011 13:27

You feel your arse is hanging out when wearing trousers nickelbabe? Do you mean it feels exposed because trousers are tighter on your bum? I dont get it.

nickelbabe · 02/03/2011 16:39

yes, i feel like my arse is exposed ,because a skirt floats gently over the bum, hiding it, whereas trousers go around the bum, under the bum and hug the bum - meaning everyone can see the shape of my bum.

Salmotrutta · 02/03/2011 16:49

I took a cover lesson yesterday and was treated to the sight of one girl with a skirt that did not quite cover the cheeks of her bum. Her tights were supposedly opaque but her knickers were visible.

And to think I used to rant at our DD 10 years ago when her skirt was about 6 inches above the knee.

dementedma · 02/03/2011 16:53

I'm with pumperspumkin. DD wears the equivalent of a belt but with opaque tights. she's young, she's pretty, she has great legs. hell, why not?

PrincessScrumpy · 02/03/2011 16:54

Haha, I'm 28 and went to a girls school with kilts - we must all have looked like we had odd body shapes as we rolled them up so high and the thickness round the waist was all skirt. Rolled them down for assembly with the head teacher! This has been going on since 1970 - where have you been? Oh, and my school was quite posh, so not a class thing, just girls being girls.

Obviously I'll frown upon it when dd does it! Grin

TrillianAstra · 02/03/2011 16:54

That makes sense, in a way, but it's not hanging anywhere, it's snugly enclosed :)

TrillianAstra · 02/03/2011 16:54

Nice skirt btw, shame it's £169 in the sale!

pastapestoforgotherpassword · 02/03/2011 16:59

I don't like it either, although my 12 year old dd does do it after she has left the house, I know this as I bumped into her on the high street as she was getting of the bus on evening and it was barely visible below her bloody blazer, of course I spoke to her about appropriateness, but its so difficult to know what they do when not with you isn't it.
