Blimey, ChaosTrulyReigns, what was the film ?

I've been going to the cinema on my own since I've been able to buy my own tickets; just because you don't know anyone who shares your taste/availablity shouldn't deprive you of the fun. Same is true for gigs, though they are a little more challenging alone.

Ormirian · 01/03/2011 15:02

I'd love to do that! Never have. Not yet...

Jacquix · 01/03/2011 15:10

No, it's a lovely indulgence and you don't have to worry about other people slagging off the film when you loved it or vice versa. But nicer during the day ? I'd feel slightly sad doing it in the evening. I went to see The Social Network on my own having already seen it with DP because of my raging crush on Andrew Garfield and no one knew I went and therefore I didn't have to justify/explain myself, ha ha. Similarly, I'm looking forward to a solo trip to The Tourist for the Paul Bettany factor. It is great for indulgent pretentious foreign flicks that no one else would touch with a bargepole too.
Foodwise, I make salty popcorn and buy a bag of Maltesers from a normal shop and mix it in. The chocolate melts a bit and you get salty sweet crunchy heaven.
Bupcakes, you're legally entitled to refuse a search of your person/bags unless a police officer is present. If there is no police officer and you refuse to be searched, the cinema staff have the right to refuse entry but are legally required to give you a refund. I've yet to put this to the test but I bet they'd rather keep your ticket money and turn a blind eye to your food.

Cinema alone is very good. You don't need snacks.

I go on my own every so often - the last thing I saw was True Grit - very good, recommend it.

ifancyashandy · 01/03/2011 15:19

Jaquix, I need to pull you up on a very serious matter.... Andrew Garfield is MINE and you need to back off or we shall be taking this outside.

Now, as I am a reasonable person, I will put your insolence down to inexperience and we shall say no more on the matter.

I go to the cinema on my own from time to time, and at the moment have a season ticket for the opera on my own. It's just sooooo easy - if DH were to come then we would have to pay a babysitter (hasn't happened yet, let's put it like that) and trying to arrange for a friend to come is sometimes the same as not going, because to find a mutually convenient evening ends up being "possibly one evening in six weeks' time, providing the planets are in alignment".

Jacquix · 01/03/2011 16:22

Get in line, ifancyashandy.

Jacquix · 01/03/2011 16:23

Meant to add :)
Hope previous didn't sound too serious ...

AtYourCervix · 01/03/2011 16:35

i'm back. i wasn't the only person on my own but was perhaps the youngest by 20 years Grin

Cinema alone is the only way to go.
But then I am a sociopath.

thebountymuncher · 01/03/2011 18:21

Solooovely- me too!

DS is at nursery, I can drive to the out- of- town one now I have a licence (hurrah!) and I'd really quite like some time all to myself.

I'm just a bit worried about the walking in and sitting down alone bit

weegiemum · 01/03/2011 18:23

I sometimes secretly go to the cinema alone when the children are at school.

I work mornings, finish at 12, don't have to be home to get them off the bus till 3.30

If I am very organised and the times are right, I love going to the cinema on my own!

lalalonglegs · 01/03/2011 18:24

Cervix - Has anyone told you what you should see? If not, True Grit - it should have kicked the King's Speech quivering, uptight arse at the Oscars Angry.

fartblossom · 01/03/2011 20:05

I used to work in a cinema in my uni holidays.

Lots of people go alone, I used to go alone after work.

Also Id like to point out that cinemas only make profit on the food, not the tickets so if everyone stopped buying it then they would go under and there would be no cinemas (apparently). Thats why its as much as it is. Though on the other hand I can understand why people would be tempted to take their own food in as it is expensive compaired to the nearby supermarkets things. Though its nothing new for cinemas to do bag searches etc and they ARE looking for recording equipment as well as food as if everyone watched recorded films no-one would go to the cinema and they would become non-existant. They are protecting their own interests.

I eat in the cinema and dont really know why. I mean how long am I there for an hour and a half, two hours (any longer and Im in pain - they're not the comfiest of places) yet I still feel the need for ice cream.

LongIslandIcedTea · 01/03/2011 20:53

Did u go to the cinema then AtYourCervix? I went late this afternoon to watch The Rite which was very scary, a true story about exorcisms. There were a lot of people on their own, more than the number of people in groups or pairs. I was surprised actually as it was a horror!

LongIslandIcedTea · 01/03/2011 20:59

Oh just read the last page of the thread OP! What did u go see then? I agree fartblossom i dont know why but i always feel the need for popcorn or ice cream at the cinema, watching a dvd at home im fine!

Meglet · 01/03/2011 21:00

yabu. I used to love going on my own.

EveryonesJealousOfGingers · 01/03/2011 21:02

YABtotallyU - i think the cinema is the perfect place to go on your own, it's not as if you chat whilst you're in there, is it?! Enjoy :)

I love going to the cinema, and I don't care whether it's by myself or with friends/dh, I still love going! It's not sad to go by yourself, in fact it has plenty of pros in my opinion.
Dh hates chick flicks and my friends don't live nearby, so if I suddenly fancy going to see a chick flick the only way I'm going to get to see one is by going to myself. Smile Doesn't bother me in the slightest, as it means I get to scoff all the popcorn bucket by myself Grin

LongIslandIcedTea · 01/03/2011 21:04

Just read your thread in Movie reviews, glad u enjoyed the Kings speech OP :)

piratecat · 01/03/2011 21:07

agree with those who like to go alone.

i must do it again soon.

forehead · 01/03/2011 21:20

I love going to the cinema alone. I can't understand why anyone would think that it was pathetic. I think that some people don't want to look as though they are Billy no mates, but i love my own company and have even been to concerts and the theatre alone.
