I love going to the cinema on my own - we are lucky enough to have a small single screen cinema in our town and it's very cosy, so I've never felt conspicuous or embarrassed being on my own when I go to see pretentious arty French films.

cestlavielife · 01/03/2011 12:44

mostly go alone - is my treat.

yes early sessions feel more suitable than coupled up friday night...

hellsbells76 · 01/03/2011 13:04

Glad it's not just me! I have been known to smuggle a fourpack of G&Ts into the cinema...

compo · 01/03/2011 13:07

Hellsbells - why?!

CupAndSaucer · 01/03/2011 13:08

I've never done it but would love to!

I'm going to make it a goal for 2011. It sounds wonderful to me...a couple of hours to eat what I like, watch a good film, and not have to make conversation. Enjoy!

CupAndSaucer · 01/03/2011 13:10

Oooo....do you have a Vue cinema near you? You're allowed to take in whatever snacks and drinks you like (except hot food). Much better than Odeon who charge a fortune for a small portion of stale popcorn.

leximark · 01/03/2011 13:15

cupand saucher
Don't bloody encourage eating in a cinema.

I have no idea why people have to shovel junk into their mouths when watching a film!

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 01/03/2011 13:23

I've been to the cinema on my own. The first time I went it was to see 'Stigmata', so we're going back a few years now. After the film ended I walked across the road and went to an ice hockey match - on my own! Grin

It's not pathetic at all. What is pathetic is people who can't so much as wipe their own arse without someone holding their hand - they are the type who would miss out on a good film rather than go on their own.

DS started school in January and I now have two days a week free to do what I like, so I might start to incorporate a monthly cinema trip (would go more but it costs an arm and a leg these days Shock).

CupAndSaucer · 01/03/2011 13:27

I'm a very considerate muncher! Grin

i don't take anything that rustles or needs unwarpping. But I do like having something to munch when I'm watching a film.

And I think it's all the food they sell in the foyer that encourages people to eat - not me! Grin

CupAndSaucer · 01/03/2011 13:28

And who says I eat junk anyway....I eat only organic fresh fruit and drink mineral water.

yeah right! Grin

bupcakesandcunting · 01/03/2011 13:31

This reminds me of that thread from last year where some MNers came up with business opportunities based around silent snacks for the cinema.

Tub o' Mash was one I remember...

hellsbells76 · 01/03/2011 13:44

er, because gin and tonic is nice?

Rebeccaruby · 01/03/2011 13:44

No problem with going to the cinema by myself. I've never understood why people go in groups or, even worse, it's suggested as a first date. OK, you might get one drink with your friends or date before or after, but why build a social event around sitting in the dark in silence? If you want to see a friend or spend time with a partner, then go to a cafe, or pub, or restuarant, or something like bowling, or a walk. Then you can chat.

Never understood why people meet up with friends, spend 10 minutes beforehand chatting while they queue, then after the film it's "bye, then."

As for the whole bag search business, if it's just you, then you can conceal anything in a pocket or two, unless you are a real pigletSmile.

Shodan · 01/03/2011 13:44

Last time I went on my own was to see Eclipse. Quite rightly no-one else wanted to go.

I kid you not, in that tiny cinema I was one of about a dozen single, old-enough-to-know-better women, all giving each other sheepish grins.

It was fab.

TyraG · 01/03/2011 13:47

I like going on my own as well. I don't have to listen to anyone making a running commentary while I'm trying to watch then asking me what happened because they were too busy running their mouths. DH doesn't do this (he knows better), but have some girlfriends that have done it in the past.

It's nice to get away from the kids for a couple hours and see something that's not animated. :-)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2011 13:49

my biggest tip is not to buy anything that you can't put down if you need the loo. Balancing popcorn while going for a wee is tricky.

ArfurBrain · 01/03/2011 13:50

i'm going to go see the king's speech by myself as it doesn't have any aliens or explosions or hobbits in, so Dh will not go with me. And if i go with friends, they talk through films or snigger.

I WILL TAKE A HUGE BAG OF JEELYBEANS AND NOT HAVE TO SHARE MMMMWWWWAH HAH HAH.

I took a hip flask of whisky once, to a LOTR marathon...

I love going to the cinema on my own, during when pg with DS3 and on mat leave would go once a week when DS1 at school and DS2 at nursery.

This is one of my all time favourite guilty pleasures Blush

LadyOfTheManor · 01/03/2011 13:56

Do people STILL go to cinemas?

Shock

I haven't paid to see a film in such a long time, I though it was a dying movement, like actually PURCHASING Cds.

begonyabampot · 01/03/2011 14:00

Went on my own once as no-one was interested in the movie. it was great and ill do it again no probs.
