I love going on my own. I don't do it very often though. The most recent films I have seen on my own are The Wedding Planner - rubbish, but I needed to escape the house after a row! Got a parking ticket and everything for parking in sodding KFC car park. As IF I'd want to stay in KFC for more than 1 .5 hrs.

I have also seen The Kite Runner, The Last Temptation of Christ and Calendar Girls ALL BY MYSELF!

Get those chocolate flavoured mice.

Nancy66 · 01/03/2011 10:20

Oh no....it's bliss. I'd rather go alone than with DP who fidgets and whinges all the time about the legroom.

When DD was little I'd do this about once a month.
able to watch a two hour film the whole way through with no interruption was wonderful.

YABU. Going to the cinema alone used to be one of my favourite things to do. Sadly, I haven't done it ONCE since my daughter was born.

bupcakesandcunting · 01/03/2011 10:22

My friend used to wear flared jeans and she ten used to cellotape bags of snacks to her calves, I shit you not.

upahill · 01/03/2011 10:22

Blimey I 've been going to the cinema alone since I was 14!!
DS whose 11 sometimes goes by himself as well!

Me and a friend went to see Black Swan - We both thought it was the biggest load of shit to be filmed! natalie Portman looks great but simpers and whinges all the way through it.

The Fighter was fantasic I went with DH and I loved it he thought it was good (Which is the equivilant of fantastic for most people)

I went alone to see A bit of heaven- not too bad, quite enjoyable. The main (only) reason I went was because Gael Garcia Bernal was in it!

Mike Leigh's Another Year was good. A typical Leigh film about people rather than a dramatic story. Nicely done.

I am going (probably alone) this Friday to see Barney's Version .

DH and I are going to see Bitiful (Javier Bardem) on Saturday.

Do not get nachos minstrals or anything. There is no need to sit stufing your face watching a film.

Not at all!

My mum has just started going to the cinema alone because my dad doesn't want to go, and she is loving it Grin! She saw The Kings Speech the other day and came back raving about it.

SlightlyJaded · 01/03/2011 10:23

Love cinema alone.

Definitely sneak contraband snacks in though. Our local vue charges £2.95 for a packet of minstrels or revels Shock

exexpat · 01/03/2011 10:24

I go by myself - either as an escape from the house when the children are at school (cheap daytime showings and no babysitting fees), or if there is an obscure foreign film I want to see but would feel bad about inflicting on any friends.

I smuggle sweets in sometimes too - never been searched, but if you think your cinema does search, I think a packet of minstrels would fit in a tampon box? Wink

AtYourCervix · 01/03/2011 10:25

now then.do i have to wait for dh to get in (dd off school sick) or shall i abandon her again? (already did while i went to the osteopath).

YABU I love going to the cinema on my own. Whenever anyone says I don't do enough stuff that's just for me and that I should do more things I enjoy the only thing I can think of doing that would make me really happy and that didn't involve DD would be to take the day off work and go and see several films back to back in a nice cinema.

LongIslandIcedTea · 01/03/2011 10:27

I frequently go to the cinema on my own as i have an Unlimited card so i like to go whenever i have free time. There's usually at least 1 other person there who is also on their own, all of different ages. I think the only time i regretted being on my own was when i watched Devil, a really scary film! Today actually im off to see The Rite on my own, which is a horror about an exorcism but im looking forward to being scared! Grin

Oh and the cinema i go to NEVER checks your bags. Enjoy your film whatever u choose to see, maybe something funny?

KurriKurri · 01/03/2011 10:28

I once went to a morning show of some arty film (can't remember what) on my own. I was the only person there until about a minute before the film started, when a huge bloke came in and sat right in front of me - why? why would someone do that?

In answer to your question The King's Speech and Minstrels (wine gums are nice for the pictures too, and revels).

Shock at the wanker Chaos

ifancyashandy · 01/03/2011 10:30

I adore going on my own.

I go in the afternoon so the cinema is nearly empty and there's no annoying twats rustling of sweetie wrappers.

In fact, I looked at my local's website earlier this morning and am gutted that there's nothing on I haven't seen / want to see.

HellonHeels · 01/03/2011 10:31

Totally love cinema on my own!

Can't advise on snacks as I loathe eating in the cinema but as a kindness to others please don't eat nachos - smelly food should be banned from cinemas and when I rule the cinema world it will be :)

AtYourCervix · 01/03/2011 10:34

minstrels it is then.

LongIslandIcedTea · 01/03/2011 10:34

How about 'I am Number four' if u like sci-fi's and thrillers or 'Just go with it' for a romantic comedy. Gnomeo and Juliet i also highly recommend :)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/03/2011 10:39

I last went on my own to see Bruno. I really needed someone with me to cringe along.

upahill · 01/03/2011 10:39

I might go to see enemies of the people tonight - It's bit grim. It's a documentary about the Pol Pot era. A jounalist has done research and worked his way up through the chain of command of the Khynmmer Rouge.

A bit grim but informative by the sound of it.
I can't see that I can get anyone to go with me to that one.

This thread has got me thinking though.

My mum has often gone to the cinema/ theatre etc by herself if her mates aren't available.

I have since I was an early teenager and now I notice my young son likes going by himself sometimes.

I wonder if there is a 'a want to be alone' gene? Grin

vic77en · 01/03/2011 10:44

Alone is the way to go - get to choose the film (dp prefers intense, intellectual ones, I like a bit of fluff), the sweets (he prefers popcorn) and don't have to pay for babysitter.
Hmm, may go this evening as haven't seen King's speech yet

upahill · 01/03/2011 10:49

The best thing about being alone is that you don't have to talk to anyone!!!

When I go and see a film I expect to watch it from start to finish with out comment. So when I go with DH and certain friends they are the same - no problems.

The other year I went with a close friend who I usually go to the pub or to gigs with. We have been mates for about 15 years but never been to the pictures. We went to see 'Looking for Eric'. We were the only two in the cinema and she chatted all the way through!! The next time we went we saw Control so I made sure DH was sat between us!

Another time with a different mate to see 'I'm not there' and mate fell asleep and stared snoring!! (Mind you it was a crap film!)

drfayray · 01/03/2011 10:54

I love going to the cinema by myself. I get to choose what I want to see and see it in peace. I am planning on going either tomorrow or Friday in the daytime whilst the kids are in school.

I used to get Woolies pick a mix in the olden days when I lived in Sheffield. Now in Brisbane I just watch the film without snacks.

upahill · 01/03/2011 10:58

Lots of movie goers on this thread.
Why don't you come over to the 'MOVIE REVIEW' Thread.

It's a bit slow moving there at times and it would be great to have more opinions!

Cakeybaker · 01/03/2011 11:05

It makes me laugh when they want to search you for contraband. Unless they can show me a diagram that proves I can make explosives out of a bottle of mineral water and a pack of maltesers, they can sod off Grin
