GretchenWiener · 27/02/2011 22:38

you adress was bad

Sanesometimes1 · 27/02/2011 22:39

oh did it - just seen that it's 2 x open brackets then space to what you want to say then close with x 2 brackets - just in case anyone else didn't know how to do this - am quite pleased that the op brought this up actually else I would never know how to do it Grin

GretchenWiener · 27/02/2011 22:40

no space at the start. leave a space before you do the caption then no space

PerArduaAdNauseum · 27/02/2011 22:42

OK, I'm starting to see some reasonableness in the OP.

How about users aren't allowed to use anything more complicated than the Smile until they've mastered linking? That'll stop the random flinging of glasses and mugs around the site...

And the really literate people get to use the [wunk]...

RustyBear · 27/02/2011 22:43

You need two round it

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2011 22:50

op i agree... the instructions are really incredibly clear (changed from how they used to be to make them easier as well!!!)

you have your link?

all you have to do is put around it

it's not bloody rocket science!

Clary · 27/02/2011 22:52

I have always wondered what people mean when theysay "can't do links" - I assumed (naively perhaps) they had keyboards with no square brackets.

Couldn't fathom the issue otherwise. Still can't actually, tho I see from here it is an issue.

Lol @ Custy!

thisisyesterday · 27/02/2011 22:53

i think in some cases it just means "i can't be arsed to actually look at the bit where it tells me how to do it and it's nanoseconds quicker for me to just cut and paste the address. although I then spend even more seconds typing out the fact that i couldn't do a link"

GORGEOUSX · 27/02/2011 23:20

But how does one paste? Blush

Clary · 27/02/2011 23:23

Control V works for me.

privategodfrey · 27/02/2011 23:23

copy = ctrl and C
cut = ctrl and x
paste = ctrl and v

In our analyses of human computer interaction, we do like to develop personnae to better understand users and how they interact with the digital world. However, in doing so, we do try to avoid the use of "Moron" as a generalised user type. I do remain open-minded as to whether this is actually best practice of not.

I think I would say that most other programs (eg Word) anything you type beginning "http://" or "https://" becomes a link. So you can't blame people for being confused when a site deviates from the standard (but as it is a free country, you may, of course, call them morons).

midlandsmumof4 · 28/02/2011 00:59

Love to know where the OP is.

Tee2072 · 28/02/2011 07:50

Except, mellicauli, I am fairly certain that Word etcs ability to do that is fairly new in computer terms, newer than MN and the internet, for certain. Someone just post a Way Back Machine link to MN 2000! I am fairly sure Word has only been auto entering URLs since about 2005.

Granted, not everyone has been on the internet since 2000 or earlier like I and, I would assume you, have been.

So I do not think the site is actually deviating from what was the standard when the site code was written. Most older message boards I have been on use BBL rather than HTML, for example, even in 2011.

thisisyesterday · 28/02/2011 11:39

i tend to right click and then choose "paste" from the menu

Abr1de · 28/02/2011 11:43

MN has the clunkiest linking system I know.

TrillianAstra · 28/02/2011 11:46

If I had a pound for every time I had seen Shiney write "If I had a pound for every time this thread has been started...." I'd have a small but not insignificant number of poounds.
