To Really, Really, Hate That Word?

WhyDoesThatWordExist · 25/02/2011 17:03

Call me an old prude, but, why does the 'C**t' word exist? And why do so many MNers use it? It HAS to be the most offensive, crude, word there is?

The way I see it, it shows exactly what sort of person you are, if you think it's okay to use it? Or is it my age showing?

Go on, flame me.....

OP posts:
BaroqueAroundTheClock · 25/02/2011 17:04

I think twat is worse.

SugarSkyHigh · 25/02/2011 17:05

I won't flame you but I don't have a problem with it - I think it should be used more and reclaimed!

fartmeistergeneral · 25/02/2011 17:05

just a word at the end of the day. I can't understand how people can feel offence at a jumble of letters.

The only time I hate swearing is if it's done aggressively, but it's the aggression I hate rather than the language.

SusieFlo · 25/02/2011 17:10

Why do people hate it so much? It is merely a word that means vagina, and has been around for centuries...

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 25/02/2011 17:12

I use it when I want to be offensive and crude. It's very handy for that.

mamsnet · 25/02/2011 17:13

It's my word of last resort.. I use it when I am really at the end of my tether.. And I would NEVER use it in front of my mother, despite being the quintessential Irish, pint drinking, loud swearer..

Honeybee79 · 25/02/2011 17:15

It's no worse than many others. Why should it be considered worse than calling someone a prick? Are female genitals more offensive and/or shameful than the male equivalent? Illogical.

I have reclaimed it for myself.

lazarusb · 25/02/2011 17:16

It describes my ex perfectly and it upsets my PILs when I say it. Grin

SugarSkyHigh · 25/02/2011 17:16

Could MN HQ launch a new campaign, called Reclaim Cunt or something similar???

BuzzLiteBeer · 25/02/2011 17:18

Can you tell us why you find it so offensive?

BooyFuckingHoo · 25/02/2011 17:19

i never used it til i found MN and now i only use it (rarely) on here not in RL.

SeeJaneKick · 25/02/2011 17:19

It's old....very old...I think hate is worse. And slag.

Honeybee79 · 25/02/2011 17:20

Lol, yes a Reclaim Cunt campaign!

Psammead · 25/02/2011 17:20

Hmm. It is offensive when the intention behind it is to express pure disdain and hatred.

But as a word, it's really quite wonderful. We need to reclaim it.

SeeJaneKick · 25/02/2011 17:20

It only means fanny....or vagina...do you hate those too?

JohannaM · 25/02/2011 17:20

It's a perfectly acceptable old English word to describe that particular area of the female body.

Chaucer uses it in his Wife of Bath's Tale;

"Ye shul have queynte right ynogh at eve."

"Is it for ye wolde have my queynte allone?"

Plenty of Medieval English towns had their Gropecunt Lane or Alley. A reference to the business conducted in those particular streets.

It's the aggressive way the word is used as an epithet that causes offence.

frazzle26 · 25/02/2011 17:21

I'm with you OP, it's my least favourite word too!!

DramaInPyjamas · 25/02/2011 17:22

It's one of my favourite words actually.. There are worse that I don't like imo.

Am from Scotland - We call people cunts as a term of affection.

Annpan88 · 25/02/2011 17:22

Its a beautiful part of the female body...ok I just like the word. I think clunge is worse...or gash Blush

DramaInPyjamas · 25/02/2011 17:23

I meant endearment, not affection.

gothmog · 25/02/2011 17:24

i prefer 'snatch'

HenriettaFarthingay · 25/02/2011 17:25

I'm from Scotland too - I've never heard anyone being called a c*nt as a term of affection, but perhaps we move in different circles.

Personally, I think it's a horrible word, I find it offensive to my ears.

Smile
PortBlacksandGinLane · 25/02/2011 17:25

It's a great word - it has gravitas Grin

No word for men's genitalia has the same effect....

And it just sums some people up so beautifully.....

TobyLerone · 25/02/2011 17:26

'clunge' sounds like it smells. so does 'minge'.

SusieFlo · 25/02/2011 17:26

SeeJaneKick - I agree with you that "slag" is a lot worse (not least because of the misogynistic sentiment that tends to go with it)
