to think there's a hierarchy of swear words?

I always thought bastard was up there with fuck and cunt as TheVeryBadWords.

It's come to my attention today that some don't think that bastard is too bad.

So please could you list swear words in order of LikelihoodToCauseYouOffence so I can know what I'm farking talking about in future?

I love the Periodic Table. Now if I had had this when I was at school I may have passed chemistry.

Having worked in a school, I can say there is a clear difference between swear words in general and those directed at people.

eg drop something heavy on your foot and swear is not the same as get up in someones face aggressively and say the same thing.

So I guess the thing is that its about the delivery and intent of the word as well as what they have said.

Also - I have had to use bastard in its technical context with kids when talking about the past.

Cunt is up there for me, even though I quite like saying it, I'm always a bit when I hear someone else say it , also bollocks is worse than bastard imo.

I was having this very conversation with dp last night. Both agreed cunt was up there at the top, he thought closely followed by gash (which is, according to him, a hateful word) and I'm frankly horrified to type it. I htink cunt, closely followed by motherfucker and twat. Bastard doesn't even register on my swearometer.

I agree there is, but have always wondered why. An insult is an insult surely?

I would say shit is far worse than bloody. Infact bloody would be my least offensive one.

Love the word bollocks. Say the C word not often but don't like it at all, tis the worst swear word ever.

Some swear words can also be used in a friendly affectionate way, have heard ppl call each other fuer and bastd and even old cu, loads of times, and they are the bestest of friends/brothers etc. I think I agree with vj32 it really does depend on how it's said and in what context. I am not offended at all by swearing if said swearing is not said angrily/menacing iykwim,

I always thought of bastard as a fairly mild swearword, and some people are rating it higher that shit, which I consider pretty strong. Funny how different people see things.
