I always thought bastard was up there with fuck and cunt as TheVeryBadWords.

It's come to my attention today that some don't think that bastard is too bad.

So please could you list swear words in order of LikelihoodToCauseYouOffence so I can know what I'm farking talking about in future?

The same biological area as number 1 in the list!!!

tallpoppies · 25/02/2011 00:29

That was in answer to sane's question by the way!

tallpoppies · 25/02/2011 00:31

And as my 7 year old informs me - bloody isn't really a swear word. You're just saying that something is full of blood. I tend to agree!

Sanesometimes1 · 25/02/2011 00:34

ok thanks will now know what it means if someone ever calls me it ! lol

midnightservant · 25/02/2011 00:35

When I moved to the North East from London, it took a while to get used to all and sundry calling each other 'yer bugger'

tallpoppies · 25/02/2011 00:38

I would add in the permutations of no.1 (I think everyone agrees on that one being at the top) and also cock, cocksucker, dick etc over bugger and bloody which don't really register on my scale.

Anyone know why giving the middle finger is worse than giving the v's or how on earth this started?

Isetta · 25/02/2011 01:30

I have to admit I say most of those things and find them quite therapeutic, bollocks is my favourite Blush
the exception being C which I really don't like, I tend to say fook, I know I'm really stressed when I say F..
arsecandles Shocknot heard that before, love it!

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 15:08

well put tallpoppies - I was a bit surprised about the lack of cock, prick, knob, crap and turd.

I know that people seem happy with 'a cock up' but to me that describes an erection, and cock comes in the upper half of the list for me, insofar as I would not use it in polite society, the same as I wouldn't use prick to describe someone...

Crap seems acceptable to Americans (there's a 'crap game' which is cards or dice, cannot remember) but shit and crap are synonymous to me, and words I'd rarely use.

bloody, bugger, are low on my list too, along with blimey

I know there's something of a north/south divide on "twat" as in the way David Cameron seemed to think of it as fool (a parallel with prat, or twit, perhaps) while it is treated as up there with cunt and similar, for many people north of London.

Also how come no mention of "fanny" or is that considered acceptable, or just not shocking for most on MN ?

I mentioned knob (and should add knobhead) because I remember being in an estate agent's office when one (female) member of staff using the phone in a quiet (though not empty, there was a couple looking at brochures as well as myself, and 2 staff present) day told her friend how 'he was such a knobhead' and I was a teeny bit surprised she would say it in public earshot.

Someone mentioned tosser, but how does that rank against sod (which I don't think has been mentioned). Now in some circles 'you silly/daft sod' is really no worse than 'you fool', and I guess with all the bumsex threads on MN, it might have lost any shock value !

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 25/02/2011 15:10

Words beginning with B don't count as swearing do they? Smile I hate C*t and F*k

BoffinMum · 25/02/2011 15:13

I recall an old boss of mine discussing this. "I am not all that stuck up you know, Boffin, I can swear. I can say shit and bum". I think he has a bit of work to do before he reaches MN heights. Grin

voiceofnoreason · 25/02/2011 15:16

online swearing tool

Very very funny - with more original swearing that you can shake a stick at

Grandmasterpudge · 25/02/2011 15:16

yeah I think their is

.Cunt
.Fuck(all adaptations , motherfucker)
.Twat
.Bastard
.shit
.bitch
.bugger

I cant think of any more im sure theres more
I've found this approach is more prevalent after dc if someone said Shit infront of my DS I would be unimpressed if someone said 'fucking cunt' I would go crazy

Deaddei · 25/02/2011 15:19

I'm very fond of buggery bollocks.
And we have a neighbour we call Tosser Jim.

bristolcities · 25/02/2011 15:20

My Grandmother told me the other day that she thinks fuck is a very middle class word???

meandmybub · 25/02/2011 15:23

I'm with Boffin's boss .... my DH laughs at me because I think bum and fart are rude words .... now I need to go and have a lie down.

Slightly off topic, but my BIL thinks that burping audibly in company is as bad as farting ....

Where the hell were you brought up?

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 15:35

"she thinks fuck is a very middle class word"

Maybe she has heard on radio, or seen, a play where some toff has to say "Oh, do fuck off, old chap" and never heard the brickies and plumbers shouting at one another on a building site

:)

bristolcities · 25/02/2011 15:48

My Granny is an English teacher and lives in Islington so maybe your right she just doesn't hear it in the right context. Although she doesn't exactly lead a sheltered life to say the very least....

bristolcities · 25/02/2011 15:50

I had a teacher at college who was know and called by every one 'John the bastard' and i've never considered it particularly offensive.

d0gFace · 25/02/2011 15:51
  1. Cunt
  2. Fuck
  3. Bastard
  4. Shit
  5. Twat
flyingspaghettimonster · 25/02/2011 17:43

1)Cunt and racial slurs and derogatory terms for disabled people
2)flange
3)minge and many other hideous terms for female genitalia, such as fish taco, beef curtains etc
4)munter
5) fuck, wank, bollocks, shit, arse etc are all fine with me... not from the kids, mind. They know some words are adults only and rude, and actually seem to have no interest in them yet.

meadowlarks · 25/02/2011 17:52

I don't say cunt. But I relish fuck/shit/twat/bollocks/bugger etc. Am I the only one that thinks bloody is barely a swear word? I'm surprised by how seriously some people I meet take it. The same goes for bastard, which is pretty harmless, in my opinion.

NetworkGuy · 25/02/2011 18:42

No meadowlarks, you're not alone on bloody being barely swearing. But have a thought for anyone who happens to have been born out of wedlock, for whom bastard might really be quite upsetting, even if this situation is no longer given the same level of disgrace as in previous decades. While it may be 'pretty harmless' to you, someone in earshot might cringe at the utterance.
