christian lady has written a book claiming jesus can cure homosexuality

I'm not getting into the debate of wether there is a God/Jesus etc. It just this has really mad me angry, how can you cure something that is NOT an illness. I find this extremely insulting and judgemental.

"intelligent people not getting what Lady was saying in order to make a point"

Just caught up with this. I think I was one of those you thought was being deliberately obtuse (you said "We've covered this") to me earlier.

I wasn't being obtuse. I got what Lady meant. You just didn't grasp the extra layer of irritating nitpicking I was doing Wink

My post was an attempt (though probably not a very clear one) to point out that there was no internal logic to the parallel she drew between the two types of people who "cannot" reproduce. Because in one case it was to do with them being gay, and in the other it was to do with them being infertile. It was apples and oranges and IMO it made her remarks even sillier.

Anyway, I know things have moved on but I wanted to clarify because I slightly object to being called out as deliberately obtuse when I wasn't being. I hate it when people are deliberately obtuse. I was being annoyingly pedantic.

Dirty - Grin I apologise profusely; I wholeheartedly respect annoying pedantry and indeed, irritating nitpicking!

My point was that whilst gay people can and do reproduce, it is a little silly to pretend that you don't need a sperm and an egg to do so. One comes from women, one comes from men. See, I can be an annoying pedant too!

Lenin - I have apologised if anything I said has offended you but to be honest I don't think that anything I've said is actually offensive. From what I've seen, no-one is trying to erase you or tell you that you shouldn't be gay. And no-one is saying that gay people can't have children - just that they can't do so without the missing ingredient from the opposite sex. Please argue that one if you will!

And I think this debate has been full of context and everyone falling over themselves to make sure their exact meaning has been understood. They're just giving their opinion and provided no-one is committing a crime / inciting hatred, everyone has the right to their opinion and to express it.

I'm going to leave this thread now but thanks for an interesting discussion everyone.

This thread has got a cheek. Someone gay says she feels erased for being gay, or being questioned about being gay, and posts flow forth, grovelling in apology. Yet christians and christianity are considered fair game it seems - to be derided, sneered at, insulted. MN is fast and easy with Jesus Christ! Jesus fucking Christ! etc etc (many etcs, many posts) as expletives, and no-one bats an eyelid. That's pretty erasing I think.

Pollo · 28/02/2011 06:08

Won't look at the link. It isn't an illness, sexual preference is in the very fibre of someone's being. It will not come out in the wash, with counselling, aversion therapy or anything else. Being gay isn't problem - prejudice and ignorance are. I'm with Maddonawhore - the gays I know have sooooo much fun!

Smokingnuns - get your own thread.

"AIBU for thinking Christians are being discriminated against, despite being the established church of the country, having more state funded schools than any other religion, a statutory requirement for Christian worship in all state schools, bishops in the house of lords, a fringe pressure group that keeps losing discrimination cases and a massive sense of entitlement?"

I agree that the crucial difference is that nobody on MN is suggesting that Christians should not have children.
