To Track Down The Stranger I Stole From And Say Sorry

...20 years later?

Namechanged obv.

I was a teenager and I committed bank card fraud. Could never do anything like that now. The person has quite a unique name and I may have found them on 192.com. I would offer to pay back the money whether or not the bank refunded it.
That is another reason I am posting, to find out if it is likely that the person got the money back, because it was over £200.

Oh God, please do not call them. I would be absolutely livid if someone who had done this to me had the nerve to contact me by telephone 20 years later - at home presumably?

Am with kitbit - leave it to them in your will - assuming they are not elderly already?

Oh dear, I do not recommend phoning! If it gets traced back to you, you are admitting a crime and could get in trouble. It would be smart to just mail with a letter saying how you looked them up and want to replay them the money you stole from them, your apologies and that sort of thing. Keep it quite brief, and maybe even drive to another town to mail it, to be sure there is no link to yourself. Sort of like postsecret.com with money.
Good luck!

I really honestly think yo are doing he wrong thing here, move on, im sure they have. It is your guilt and that is your punishment. Dont punish them further by bringing it all back to them 20 years later.
Im getting quite frustrated about this as it seems you are only reading and taking in the posts saying go for it, good on you.
Please re think your plans.

I'm a little lost here. We didn't have pin numbers 20 years ago. So how did you forge something to get a pin number?

Which makes me think it has to have only happened in the last couple of years? Not 20 years ago...

I have had my purse stolen three times. One of those times it must have been one of my work colleagues who took my bag from the staff toilets Sad - I never found out who it was. I would be delighted if she contacted me anonymously to apologise as it caused me a lot of bother at the time. I wouldn't mind about the money particularly or even who it was but I would like to know that she is sorry.

You can send postal orders up to the value of £250 and don't have to give your name.

Snorbs · 01/03/2011 16:22

I had my first cash card in about 1989 and I used that with a PIN.

I don't see how taking responsibility for a poor choice, apologising for it and trying to make things right can be seen as "punishing" someone. If anything it would put their mind at rest.

BuzzLiteBeer · 01/03/2011 20:43

of course we have pin numbers, how do you think people used atm machines (which have been around since the 1960's)? Thr pin came long before the card.

BuzzLiteBeer · 01/03/2011 20:56

*had, not have.

bintofbohemia · 06/03/2011 21:48

OP - what happened?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/03/2011 00:06

If you're a Corrie fan, it hasn't worked very well for Becky and Steve so just return the money anonymously and keep quiet. Wink
