mn is a public website. We do not sign up to terms and conditions that say threads may not be discussed outside of mn, on twitter etc...

yep, thread about a thread... big deal.

so - thread started on mn. Another poster tweeted about said thread, came back to the thread and said she'd tweeted about it.

Subsequently posters called for her to be banned for tweeting about a sensitive thread, followed by lots of other nasty name-calling.

Thing is, the thread was public anyway. You don't have to be logged into mn to view it. You don't have to have a button next to each post to tweet about it - all you'd have to do is copy/paste the link into twitter. Once you put your private business on a public website you lose control over what happens to it/who talks about it/tweets about it/potentially writes about it in the press.

To suggest that a poster should be banned for talking about a thread that is on a public website, on another public website is ridiculous.

Mn has hundreds of thousands of hits a day. People are very naive if they think that their private, sensitive business is limited to the few people that post on the threads in question.

And people do discuss mn on twitter. Both in terms of threads/the potential genuineness of posters/the outcomes of threads. It's just that they don't come back on to mn to talk about having done so.

Lenin, you can't mass delete on Twitter anymore?Shock

Bugger. I loved that. It made Twitter better than rl in respect of having a lovely clean slate easily availble.

I suppose the RL equiv is going to confession.

Maryz, it's certainly been an eye-opener, hasn't it ? Sad

yogididabooboo · 21/02/2011 12:19

when will people realise that you are not commenting to them personalyy but to an anonymous persona.

when you link to a thread you are discussing a situation or discussion topic, not the specific person.

I have no idea what the thread in question is but it doesn't matter, this happens a lot.

So many times you see people moan about "shout outs on facebook and twitter"
it is ridiculous.

MN WANT people to raise awareness of the hot topics.that is why they retweet them themselves, they link them on facebook, they even have them in their box on teh front page to try and entice people in.

to think that if you post on a public website it shoudl be treated as some confidence with a trusted friend is laughable

wannaBe · 21/02/2011 12:20

"I suppose the RL equiv is going to confession." apparently there's an app for that too. Wink Grin

"And in reality we never know who is reading anyway - a few weeks ago a woman standing next to me in a shop said "oh I'm on mumsnet too." she'd clearly recognised me from my posts on here even though I don't know her personally"

Did you have "I am MN's wannabe" on your back? If not how on earth did she recognise you? Given that you are one of the biggest "watch what info you share" posters on here?

BitOfFun · 21/02/2011 12:21

Maryz, it's not really that shocking or hard to understand, surely? How many times have people said here that they wish there was some kind of siren than went off when a fight started? And how many times do people start threads about deleted threads, on which people pop up and say "Gah, I miss all the gossip"? Loads, it's human nature, especially in large groups. Tweeting along the lines of blimey-it's-all-kicking-off-on-here may sometimes be in poor taste, but it's not really anything to report to the Hague Convention.

PeterAndreForPM · 21/02/2011 12:22

I didn't get the "woman in the shop next me recognised me as Wannabe from MN" either

was she psychic ?

StealthPolarBear · 21/02/2011 12:25

Maybe wannabe has two heads and purple prickles all over her back

In which case wannabe don't answer that as you will out yourself again :o

You, otoh would be identifiable as the only PA fan over 30 Wink

BitOfFun · 21/02/2011 12:27

I think wannabe is confessing to mning from her phone at a shop counter, how roooode! Grin

and the fact that I'm an utter pillock Smile

cyb · 21/02/2011 12:30

Alouiseg did not 'call for back up' on Twitter. She said she was likely to get banned and was making people cross, folk asked why and she linked to the thread

We dont all agree with each other on twitter btw, same as on MN

Pagwatch · 21/02/2011 12:32

I don't feel that linking on Twitter is wrong. Everyone has their own view. But i wouldn't do it for reasons that are more emotional than rational.

If you post on mn there is a sense of throwing information out in front of a random audience.
The idea that one of those people will then link it to a group of friends in a ' look at this twat. Come and laugh at them or goad them' just feels snide to me.

I frequently post at people who refer to mumsnetters as if they are a bullying clique ( you mumsnet vipers type stuff) that actually we are just a random group of individuals sitting in front of our computers.
The fact that certain threads get linked in the hope of amusing like minded people or to rally support just seems ..... I don't know...mocking, sneering. I don't know. Just doesn't sit well with me.

But then I am a Luddite.

stealth well actually I am fairly identifyable from info I've posted on here.

I am blind/have a guide dog/have posted about where I live/how many children I have. It's not that hard to put the pieces together if you live in the same area and post on the same site, iyswim.

BitOfFun · 21/02/2011 12:35

I have never seen a "back me up" tweet or facebook link though, Mary. I suppose they might happen and I miss them (and I dont have a lot of mners on my Facebook), but there are lots of tweets just flagging up a fight etc, like Alouise's clearly did. She didn't ask anyone to agree with her, that I saw.

yogididabooboo · 21/02/2011 12:35

Maryz - i share your distaste for FB, for mostly the same reasons.

PeterAndreForPM · 21/02/2011 12:37

wannabe, I use this site a lot and didn't know any of those things about you

anyway, am not doubting you, just can't imagine that happening at all

I would absolutely fall over from shock if that ever happened to me

and then have to emigrate Grin

EverettUlyssesMcGill · 21/02/2011 12:41

alerting people that there was a thread kicking off?

Sorry, that's just horrible. Why would anyone consider that a valid motivation for, well, anything?

It's blatant use of another person's awful situation as entertainment, and that disgusts me.

wannaBe · 21/02/2011 12:41

lol PA.

I think I posted on the same thread as this person once (can't remember though) but I've certainly given advice about the area I live in in the past. And the rest is fairly common knowledge if you've been here long enough, although I obviously don't feel the need to make that my identity, iyswim, but most who know my posting history know these things about me.

I've never seen calls for people to back others up on threads either. I don't have mn'ers on fb but I do a few on twitter.

And how often do we see people say "pm me the details" if a thread has kicked off/been deleted - that's no different, surely?
