mn is a public website. We do not sign up to terms and conditions that say threads may not be discussed outside of mn, on twitter etc...

yep, thread about a thread... big deal.

so - thread started on mn. Another poster tweeted about said thread, came back to the thread and said she'd tweeted about it.

Subsequently posters called for her to be banned for tweeting about a sensitive thread, followed by lots of other nasty name-calling.

Thing is, the thread was public anyway. You don't have to be logged into mn to view it. You don't have to have a button next to each post to tweet about it - all you'd have to do is copy/paste the link into twitter. Once you put your private business on a public website you lose control over what happens to it/who talks about it/tweets about it/potentially writes about it in the press.

To suggest that a poster should be banned for talking about a thread that is on a public website, on another public website is ridiculous.

Mn has hundreds of thousands of hits a day. People are very naive if they think that their private, sensitive business is limited to the few people that post on the threads in question.

And people do discuss mn on twitter. Both in terms of threads/the potential genuineness of posters/the outcomes of threads. It's just that they don't come back on to mn to talk about having done so.

Funny how she's protected her tweets now (presumably so only her friends can see them ?) I don't go on twitter so I don't really know how it works.

SS, you do know she's following you on twitter? I can no longer see her tweets but I CAN see who she is following.

squeakytoy · 21/02/2011 20:02

SS, I really dont see that the sewn up comment was in anyway directed at you. Confused

Blatherskite · 21/02/2011 20:03

Where did I offer an opinion on whether it was wrong or not?

I said "The only person I have seen discussing sewn up fanjo's and trolling is Stupiditysquared" because that is the truth. Not once last night while I was on Twitter did I see that but then the chat moves quite quickly and it could easily have slipped by without me noticing. It's not like a thread where you necessarily read every post.

I did not say that she didn't say it, I said I didn't see it.

Rannaldini · 21/02/2011 20:03

what is the problem with saying the sewn up vagina brigade
why is it so bad?
have i missed something?

it seems that some things make people inexplicably angry

what is going on?

Georgimama · 21/02/2011 20:05

I have never been on twitter and had never noticed the twitter and FB buttons on post headers until about 10 minutes ago when I started reading this thread.

Didn't read the thread in issue but I think it is a bit rich to tick a MNer off for tweeting/FBing about a thread when MN Towers put MN on twitter in the first place. And the distinction between threads which do and don't have those buttons on them is not at all obvious nor is the intention behind it clear. If MN Towers want to protect the "privacy" of this site, they could try not getting into bed with Twitter and the like in the first place. But they are running a business not a charity.

Rannaldini · 21/02/2011 20:05

a brigade sounds good

like the girls brigade

like there are many of you and maybe displays of PE and bring and buy sales

Malificence · 21/02/2011 20:10

Rannaldini, in the context of the thread, "sealed up vagina brigade" is bad, in fact it's quite hideous, if you haven't read the thread, you won't understand the insinuations behind it, you are missing the big picture.
I'd prefer not to have to spell it out tbh.

"yogididabooboo Mon 21-Feb-11 13:11:53

I would suggest re evaluating your "friends" iin that case aitch"

re this, i suppose it presupposes that everyone on my friends list is a proper mate, which as we all know they aren't, and also that i can't see what others say who aren't my friends, iykwim?

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 21/02/2011 20:16

I'd hide my twitter stream too. We're back onto bullying someone who's been accused of bullying again....

I swear, this whole site goes round and round in circles!!!

Rannaldini · 21/02/2011 20:16

oh by the time i'd gotten there it was loads of fighting and i couldn't be bothered tbh

still don't really get it but apologies if it's something i should understand
i thought it meant uptight
maybe that was what she meant

i don't think people go out of their way to cause harm in the most case

sometimes they are exasperated by the quality of the debate and it gets out of hand
sometimes i think they believe that it's trolling
some people are just too thick to follow or contribute (i have just outed myself in this category)

maybe we need to accept that this is an open forum
run for money
with some people on it who are wrong or don't think in the way that we do

other than that it's great and meh in equal quantities

Blatherskite · 21/02/2011 20:17

NEWSFLASH - ALG is not the only one to copy and paste things on the Internet!!! Shock

MN is regularly trawled, picked and regurgitated by many. many people - journalists, Matthew Wright, the Daily Mail, that bloke with the blog who hates us all etc.

All you can control is what you put on here, not how it is used afterwards.

Policies, disclaimers, warnings, punishments etc will change nothing.

Just be glad it was her and not the DM

Ah well...if not wanting my 14 year old daughter to have to see photos of a woman being spitroasted (and more) because her parent can't be bothered to remove his/her wank material from the bathroom means I have a sealed up vagina, so be it! Apparently that kind of thing just does not bother teenage girls in this day and age...apparently they are expected to be inured to all porn including any which family members choose to leave lying around. Silly girls, they should just get over it. After all, everyone wanks, dont'cha know.

Does this mean I won't have to have any more periods? Am assuming it will make wanking quite difficult.

PeterAndreForPM · 21/02/2011 20:19

Rannaldini, by "sewn up vagina" brigade it meant those women who have an objection to porn and/or won't just believe that their husbands aren't constantly watching other people shagging behind their backs.

Sometimes people show you exactly what they are like.

This is one of them.

Stupiditysquared · 21/02/2011 20:19

Would the DM have referred to my 'sealed up vagina'? Frankly no, but then they understand the laws of defamation.

Should I be thankful that that poster is a member of MN? How much did she help? Not at all, she just took the opportunity to stick the boot in, quite viciously.

PeterAndreForPM · 21/02/2011 20:21

sealed/sewn

same connotation

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/02/2011 20:22

Eleison
Are you there?
Do you remember us discussing that all this would happen?
That the expansion of Mumsnet would dilute its significance, that it would morph from a pleasant enough chat forum, into one tiny cog in a giant chattering/ twittering/facebooking blob?

And what is all this networking for, I do wonder. I sincerely wonder why its a good thing to facebook or tweet.

Those of us who are not interested, but quite like Mumsnet ... are out on a limb, it seems.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 21/02/2011 20:23

I dont actually follow ALG on twitter as I dont have a twitter account. CBF with that!!

My point is, she isnt the only person to have done it yet everyone is vilifying her. Very similarly to the "all MNers are bullies" threads, linking to particular arguments (one of which I was involved in) and then picking on the people accused of "bullying"

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 21/02/2011 20:24

Sorry, that reads back like Gabby wrote it! Grin

Hope you get what I mean?

Stupiditysquared · 21/02/2011 20:24

Oh ROFL - Twitter latest

"do me a favour, can you delete the sewn up vagina tweet, thanks, I'm removing this end. It's being quoted!"

Rannaldini · 21/02/2011 20:24

okay

i'm incredibly against porn as everyone here knows
what a terrible situation for the op

it still does not make it wrong for the tweeter to say what she liked on another website
however distasteful it might be to the op or anyone else who finds porn and its use completely unacceptable

i'm happy to be called whatever, wherever
it does not change me views or the fact that this is a free public forum

AnyFuleKnoKindaLingers · 21/02/2011 20:25

This is lunacy, you are howling at the moon.

Georgimama · 21/02/2011 20:28

Seriously, is the internet about to eat itself or what? I really don't think we need a running commentary on here of alousieg's tweets. Honestly. You feel bullied? How many people do you think read her tweet, and how many do you think have read this thread? I bet it's a lot more than 290.

You don't like the fact she tweeted a post of yours. Fine. But this is not a private, real name, confidential site and never ever has been. Remember that.
