To think that ALL state schools don't just produce teenage pregnancies, but valuable members of society?

Funny seeing some threads, as I remember going to my godmothers DS picnic & nursery sports day, and this seemed to be the view of one parent.

It was in Hampshire though...

I just laughed.

LOTM - youre the person who thinks all council houses are "free" arent you.( From a full time council house dwelling NHS Nurse - who pays FULL rent), youre so in touch.

Grin Too true, KnittingRocks.

Sorry reeling, I couldn't resist!

I'm a teacher and it's second nature to me!!

VivaLeBeaver · 21/02/2011 08:12

I believe that there are figures that show that teen pregnancy rates are similar amongst "working class" and "upper middle" class girls. Now I apoligise but I'm going to make a massive assumption and say that you could interchange the classes with "state educated" and "privately educated". The research shows though that teenagers from more middle class backgrounds are more likely to have an abortion and the teenager from a working class background is more likely to keep the baby/become a mum.

mrsgetonwithit · 21/02/2011 08:16

I went to a state school...no babies in my school.

Lots of well rounded people getting decent jobs, then buying houses and getting decent partners.

Maybe girls don't get pregnant at private schools as often because mummy puts them on the pill aged 10 because they could not live with the shame....

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 08:35

NewGold, forgive me for not knowing what a council house costs. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

My point was if you're working and getting a decent wage (say 18k+) why would you need to live in a council house? Yes I presumed they were free until someone corrected me and said they pay £25 a week for theirs. That's almost free in the big bad world...and surely if you get something like housing benefit, surely that would cover it? (unless that was HB inclusive?)

cory · 21/02/2011 08:48

LOTM, if you are working and getting an 18k salary, that would hardly get you a mortgage in the south of England, where incidentally private rents are also very high.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 08:50

I don't live in the South of England so how am I supposed to know these things? Gosh I was being chastised for not knowing how much a council house costs.

I saw a nurse on here was earning £26k a year, I didn't presume that that meant she would live in a council house. My error of judgement, clearly.

LOTM. You really need to broaden your horizons a bit especially if you want to be so opinionated about things. It's very easy to find out about different parts of the country by watching news and current affairs programmes and reading a decent newspaper. I do really struggle to understand that someone could think that council houses are free and that £18k is a decent salary. Tell us, would you be able to buy a house where you live on a salary of £18k?

Wook · 21/02/2011 09:31

LOTM good to see you owning up to one of your errors of judgement at least. One down, 8,999,999 to go.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 09:31

I don't see why I should "broaden my horizons" I don't make other peoples' wages my business. I thought 18k would be enough to rent privately? I'm sure there are rent-to-buy schemes from the government, in fact I know there is as I saw something about it in Red magazine.

Something to do with, paying rent and the govt. taking 50% of it, to put toward a mortgage down payment.

So yes it is possible-I watch the news and read newspapers, but that doesn't mean I know what a council house costs...nor will I pretend to to please posters on here.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 09:32

Where I live, geographically, 26k would be enough to rent privately-not sure how many bedrooms it would get you though.

chopchopbusybusy · 21/02/2011 09:38

If you know that £26k would be enough to rent privately where you live then you presumably know how much rent is. If you know how much rent is then you know how many bedrooms that gets you - surely?

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 09:42

Well when I earned 26k it was enough to rent privately...2 bedrooms for around £550

But that was years ago. Because we bought, I have no idea what it costs now.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 09:43

Plus I don't know how many children the woman in question has, so I don't know if 2 bedrooms would suffice.

chopchopbusybusy · 21/02/2011 09:51

I'm not sure if it mentioned it in Red magazine but house price inflation in the last 10 years has been huge. So your experience of years ago is probably not relevant today. To rent a 2 bedroom flat locally to me is £700 a month, a 3 bed house is £1000 and a 4 bed house is £1250. Plus council tax and utilities obviously, so it certainly doesn't make £18 - or even £26k a year a decent salary.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 09:52

The article didn't specify location so perhaps it was just a general rule of thumb?

redpanda13 · 21/02/2011 09:54

I went to state school and no girls in my year got pregnant while at school.A couple of them at around 18/19. My best friend went to an exclusive all girls boarding school and a girl went into labour during A level English. She had kept her pregnancy a secret and had starved herself. God knows what the poor girl would have done if her pregnancy had'nt been outed so publicly.

redpanda13 · 21/02/2011 10:01

Where in the country do you get a council house for £25 a week???
My friend has a tiny one bedroom council flat in Glasgow. It is really more what I would call a studio flat. She pays £220 a month.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 10:02

I have no idea where the person lives. Perhaps she got HB and the difference to pay was £25 a week?

giliair · 21/02/2011 10:09

£25 a week to rent a council house? Hmm

My sister is paying just under £500 a month to rent her council property.

LadyOfTheManor · 21/02/2011 10:18

Again, it must be something to do with location.

TBH if I was struggling financially to live somewhere, I'd move to a cheaper area.

KnittingRocks · 21/02/2011 10:27

"TBH if I was struggling financially to live somewhere, I'd move to a cheaper area."

If course, life is that simple isn't it Hmm.

If you are so ignorant about these issues then why express such ridiculous opinions on something you know nothing about?
