to think that my friend is being ridiculously PFP about insisting on this posh food for her little darling?

Precious First Puppy, that is...

My friend and I are both getting puppies soon, which are currently only three weeks old. She is not local, and I am liaising with the breeder/owner on her behalf.

Today, I have been given instructions to ask the lady if she will wean my friend's puppy onto a brand of food that one can only buy in the doggy equivalent of Waitrose, which is organic, omega-3 filled gluten-effing-free cordon-bleu standard canine cuisine.

I will ask, of course, but given that it will be difficult to feed the puppies separately and that the other owners are unlikely to be quite so discriminating in their choice of nourishment for their pooches, and will then have to switch their ruined little princesses onto more easily-available cheaper fare, AIBU to tell my friend she is a nitwit?

Bearing in mind that no matter how lovely, we are talking about a bloody dog- an animal which might occasionally eat its own excrement and certainly routinely rims itself for its own amusement...

Am I Being Unreasonable?

"hmm £56 for the equivalent 15kg as opposed to £17 for autarky that offers all the same benefits. think i know which way I'll go"

There is just no comparision between Autarky and Fish4Dogs, I'm afraid.

Autarky has Maize listed as it's first ingredient, something a lot of dogs are very allergic to and it doesn't even let us know how much meat is in it, which makes me think they have something to hide. Fish4Dogs has around/over 55% fish and contains no cereals at all, so is likely to be hypo allergenic for most dogs and because it actually does have a high meat content, is likely to be very good value for money.

Buda, It's all quite subjective and what works for one dog won't work for another. Generally you want as much meat content as possible and as few cereals as possible, or none. Plus, no colourings, sugars etc. Orijen is very good and has about 70% meat or fish content, but is very expensive. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I am going to change to Fish4Dogs as our current brand has lowered it's meat content and changed other ingredients and I am no longer happy with it. It's less expensive than Orijen, but 'on paper' looks a good food ingredients wise. They do big discounts for bulk orders too, which is good if you can order a lot in one go. (Their breeders club rates are very favourable which is helpful to me).

I think Burns, James Wellbeloved etc are OK and most dogs will do quite well on them, but although they and similarly priced brands are marketed as 'premium', I wouldn't really class them as that. 30% meat content is still way too low ideally.

Brands such as Skinners aren't that different to JWB, Burns etc ingredients wise and are a lot cheaper to buy.

Raw is probably the best way to feed your dog, bu not all owners can manage it or want to do it.

that's a bargain in my book

do post pics when you get her. Altho I have staffs, KCs are my Guilty Pleasure dog. I blame Lady and the Tramp

...does this mean you and BoF will be all over the doghouse threads like a rash?

You'll have seen my thread then Shiney Grin

We have just got an Alaskan Malamute.

He was bred on Bakers Shock

Today, DH has gone to PAH to buy Fish4Dogs or James Wellbeloved as I'm going to start weaning him off Bakers, I've not heard one good thing about it.

Green, runny poo. I'm sick of it! And a little Shocked that the breeder started him on it in the first place.

I've looked at Fish4Dogs, it looks ideal but if we can't get that, we go with JWB.

SpringHeeledJack · 19/02/2011 11:20

have PM'd you shiney

SpringHeeledJack · 19/02/2011 11:56

done

(hopefully)

EdgarAleNPie · 19/02/2011 12:01

why not feed BARF?

this one virtually resurrected my dog from a series of illnesses (and she won't eat dry food - just not appealing)

stores nicely in the frezer.

goes down well mixed with some biscuit.

Mouseface · 19/02/2011 12:03

Shiney - you are right. DH has James Wellbeloved for now, said PAH had everything but Fish4Dogs so we'll start him on this and see how we go.

Long term, we'll put him on Fish4.

We've got lots of support plus we're both at home all day so he has lots of attention Grin

When do you get your dog?

Mouseface · 19/02/2011 12:14

Actually, I've just searched Fish4Dogs 'nearest store'.

Our vet is listed as a stockist.

Off DH goes again! Grin

SoupDragon · 19/02/2011 12:18

Dill doesn't eat his own shit. He likes to clear out the cat litter tray instead.

He was weaned on Pedigree puppy but is now scoffing Butchers Superior which (apart from the cats' food) is the only pet food he'll eat.

Our pfd used to have posh expensive burns. Now she exists almost exclusively on bits dropped by weaning ds and turns her nose up at dog food unless it's drizzled with olive oil

Odelay · 19/02/2011 13:02

Oh and she wears a mulberry collar and lead Blush

SAF will do.

Shiney - this is the perfect site for you Grin

onceamai · 19/02/2011 13:36

I haven't read this thread but I would expect a good breeder to be feeding the puppies that sort of diet anyway and probably wouldn't buy an animal from a breeder who didn't.

OTH I only really know about cats but I'm sure the same applies to dogs too.

No the breeder will! Not change the food she is weaning puppies on IMO . We breed our show dogs occasionally and have over the years worked out which is the best food for raising pups .they do need a good quality food for the first year as this is when they are developing don't feed cheap food to pups as they need to grow. Your friend could gradually change her puppy on to food of her choice by mixing it gradually with the food from the breeder do this over about two weeks to avoid bad tummies. Chappie ect are great for adult dogs
