to think that my friend is being ridiculously PFP about insisting on this posh food for her little darling?

Precious First Puppy, that is...

My friend and I are both getting puppies soon, which are currently only three weeks old. She is not local, and I am liaising with the breeder/owner on her behalf.

Today, I have been given instructions to ask the lady if she will wean my friend's puppy onto a brand of food that one can only buy in the doggy equivalent of Waitrose, which is organic, omega-3 filled gluten-effing-free cordon-bleu standard canine cuisine.

I will ask, of course, but given that it will be difficult to feed the puppies separately and that the other owners are unlikely to be quite so discriminating in their choice of nourishment for their pooches, and will then have to switch their ruined little princesses onto more easily-available cheaper fare, AIBU to tell my friend she is a nitwit?

Bearing in mind that no matter how lovely, we are talking about a bloody dog- an animal which might occasionally eat its own excrement and certainly routinely rims itself for its own amusement...

Am I Being Unreasonable?

Bof, I know NOTHING about puppies - well, not this kind with four legs.

But no, YANBU. Yes, to Nitwittage of mate.

I would just pass the message as requested, up to the breeder to agree or object.

hephaestus · 18/02/2011 12:58

Fish4Dogs is about the only complete dried food that I would ever recommend be fed to a dog - with the exception of things like Taste of the Wild and Orijen, but the prices of those make me cry. Shock

I'm just glad that someone's actually looked into what they are planning to feed their dog instead of shoving a bowl of smarties Bakers under its nose and wondering why it dies at an early age, having had no teeth from the age of two, from multiple cancers and a chronic skin condition. Hmm

and PFP no 2 we are happy to take the cost of the better food.

BitOfFun · 18/02/2011 13:01

Oh, and I do know that I should really have put this in the Pet section, but I needed a wider audience to point and laugh ...

Actually, my mate changed her elderly BMD onto Bakers. He had a throat/upper respiratory tract infection (obv cleared up now) and as a result, combined with his age (loss of muscle tone) was having trouble swallowing. Because of the coating on Bakers, when it's moistened it's easier for him to eat - it seems to slide down his throat more easily. And he loves it. And he's the Laziest Dog On Earth so if there's been an upsurge in his activity levels due to all the Enumbers, nobody's noticed it Hmm

It's sort of like letting an old person eat whatever they like, within reason, because well, they're not long for this world and they might as well enjoy the time they've got left.

Abr1de · 18/02/2011 13:07

I'm a dog food snob. Will only give mine Orijen.

I love this op, but some people will feed their dogs anything like the man who asks woman if they have finished with their meal at the restaurant table, and then plunges his hand into the plate to pick out the meat to feed his dog who has been waiting quite patiently for her to finish.

Sorry it?s on another thread, (about dogs in restaurants) but i feel quite passionately about telling you.

I also think the dog will have a excellent life because she cares.

foxter · 18/02/2011 13:13

I feed my dog Bakers, I didn't realise there was anything wrong with it. Why hasn't my vet warned me?

harassedinherpants · 18/02/2011 13:14

I used to feed mine Orijen. Ime better food means less pooh, and that's always a good thing!!! Grin

Abr1de · 18/02/2011 13:18

Yes--my thinking! THere are another couple of brands I like as well. Another Canadian one, whose name escapes me.

This link has lots of information about dog food but is rather US oriented, foxter.

I feed my dogs a mix of Bakers and Pedigree, I really didnt think there was anything wrong with that, my Vet or the Breeder never said anything against them. I think Im a responsible loving owner, now youve got me worried that Im doing something fundamentally wrong.

BitOfFun · 18/02/2011 13:22

Pepper now and again gets our leftovers, boohoohoo. I think I'm going to get my head kicked in now.

You just don't ask breeders to wean their puppies onto anything. You trust the breeder to know what is best or you don't buy a pup from that breeder.

When you get the pup home (a good breeder will give you an information sheet showing what the pup is currently eating and when) you can, carefully, change the food.

Personally, I quite like decent dog grub and wouldn't feed anything made by Bakers but for all that, the dog is a dog so I buy a good make of complete food and mix this with fresh meat. Works for me, works for my dog. Has worked for all my dogs. Chappie, incidentally, is surprisingly good though!

Incidentally, has she asked you to ask the breeder to ensure that this Precious First Pup is removed from the collective dog bed and placed on a red velvet cushion on a gilded throne yet?

BitOfFun · 18/02/2011 13:26

Shiney would like Orijen, because it sounds like a posh make-up brand Grin
