Victoria Beckham did she use gender selection IVF?

Saw in paper you can select sex of your baby and it's only £14,000. They have been talking about having a girl for a very long time and now it is revealed that they are!I just find it fishy! £14 grand to them is nothing and she could keep trying. AIBU?

Actually the normalisation of sex selection by its use by celebrities is a grave issue for all of us.

Honeybee79 · 16/02/2011 16:24

Who knows and, more importantly, who cares?

Was always gonna be 50/50!

YABU

TrillianAstra · 16/02/2011 16:24

We don't know that she is having a girl, and if she is there is no reason to believe that there has been any intervention to produce a girl.

MarioandLuigi · 16/02/2011 16:26

OP - are you Rebecca Loos?

I know they cour publicity but how awful to have people speculating on the details of their childrens conception

Quenelle · 16/02/2011 16:30

YABU

You (presumably) don't know her so are not going to find out either way. The poor woman, having what should be a happy experience tarnished by spiteful gossips. And she's not in a position to answer back.

squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 16:30

She is extremely wealthy and has earned her wealth

debatable...

jester68 · 16/02/2011 16:35

So if she has a girl then they must have had treatment? Hmm

Well my mum had 3 boys and I was the last and her only daughter.

Was nor aware she must have had treatment to get me lol Grin

There is 50% chance either way. And to be honest bet all they want is a healthy baby- like us "normal" people do

Lulumaam · 16/02/2011 16:37

I don't think there has been any normalisation of gender selection by slebs

I can't think of any slebs off hand who've said they've used it, never mind it being normalised

and due to the ££££ and the fact it has to be done abroad, normal is pretty much the last thing it's become

Can't be arsed to read through the whole thread. I just felt the need to say to the OP -
Get a life of your own. Stop worrying about other people's choices. It really has got fuck all to do with you.
Hopefully you don't gossip about people you know in real life in this way, because if you do someone will take exception.

Bloodymary · 16/02/2011 16:50

I have no idea wether she had gender selection or not.
Of course people will say that you always have a 50/50 chance, tho my Father (now in his 80s) was one of 7 boys!
I wonder if my Grandparents were trying for a girl? Grin

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 16/02/2011 16:53

I haven't read the whole thread but as usual on AIBU - the wisdom of Kath Day-Knight comes to mind:

"You know your beeswax? Why don't you mind it?"

JeremyVile · 16/02/2011 16:53

"Actually the normalisation of sex selection by its use by celebrities is a grave issue for all of us"

Really? This has obviously passed me by... who has used gender selection?

squeakytoy · 16/02/2011 16:55

As I say everlong its debatable if she actually "earned" it... as in worked hard for it...

She has been very fortunate. She cant sing or dance, and isnt exactly Coco Chanel, but she is very lucky.

Her husband is the one who had the talent and he earns far more than she does. If she hadnt married him, I doubt we would even hear her name mentioned nowadays.

I think she's done well for someone with a modest amount of talent - and she's earned it far more than some of the other WAGs plastered all over the papers. The Spice Girls may seem has-beens now but I seem to remember them being pretty big in their day?!

I said this on a thread the other day, but at the risk of repeating myself (as I do in RL all the time) I have it on really good authority that the Beckham children are absolutely delightful - unspoilt and very sweet. So what has VB done to deserve the suspicion?

BalloonSlayer · 16/02/2011 17:03

"Her husband is the one who had the talent and he earns far more than she does. If she hadnt married him, I doubt we would even hear her name mentioned nowadays."

= and she was MUCH richer and more famous than him when they got together. One unfortunate tackle (no pun intended Wink) and his career could have ended a lot earlier.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 16/02/2011 17:03

Spice Girls sold million and squillions of records and merchandise. SGs sacked their manager early on and insisted on song-writing credits early on too. VB's dad is a self-made millionaire who took hold of her investments from an early age. Plus huge ad contracts and Beckham brand investment.

As she has never taken any money from anyone who hasn't willingly handed it over (aside from pestered parents Grin ) then 'earned' is a fair enough verb. It's not like she's been subsidised or inherited or given lots of government grants.

I'm not a fan btw.

ImFab · 16/02/2011 17:05

I very much doubt that the Oliver's used sex selection after the problems they had conceiving their first child.

EightiesChick · 16/02/2011 17:05

I quite like VB but have to say, there's some massive hypocrisy with the flood of 'why do you care?' / 'mind your own business' responses to this. If MN is not a place where posters can air idle thoughts, or, as it was put earlier on the thread, where 'A lot of people will think that you have no business trying to apply your morals to other individuals', then a lot of the site can be shut down and a lot of cyberspace used for something else. The 'what's it got to do with you?' could be used for many a thread here. If you don't like the question, fair enough, but let's not go all high-minded about it as if there is no place in the institution that is MN for speculation about other people's lives.

eatmyfood · 16/02/2011 17:08

EightiesChick I'd say that's what Sleb Twaddle is for - AIBU is asking for it really.

Out of interest if you do the gender selection stuff do you have to take the whole IVF/hormone route? Sounds horrendous if so. I think there's also sperm sorting isn't there, but maybe less reliable?

fatlazymummy · 16/02/2011 17:17

eightieschick it's just that IVF is a medical procedure therefore V Beckham is entitled to her privacy, the same way as anyone else is. Of course there's nothing wrong with debating IVF, sex selection etc, but to involve an individual comes across as rather gossipy and bitchy. IMO.
