If you are too, please vote for 38 Degrees to take it on as a campaign.

I would hope the female breast would be allowed to just be . Just like the various parts of male anatomy. Not shameful, not exploited, not for public consumption, but nothing to be ashamed of. Just a part of a human beings body.

NoSuchThingAsSociety · 16/02/2011 22:37

Why do some people feel the need to ban things of which they do not approve? I disapprove of many things in this decadent and perverse land of ours, yet do not seek to force my views on others.

Live and let live, I say.

giyadas · 16/02/2011 22:40

It's not so about banning but moving it to a more appropriate setting. If you want tits buy a tit mag, but they don't need to be in a newspaper. Women having tits isn't news.

LadyOfTheManor · 16/02/2011 22:41

I'm not "defending page three" I'm defending the right for women to do as they please.

"Struggled" was put in speech marks as I was quoting from whomever said it in the first place.

LadyOfTheManor · 16/02/2011 22:41

Reading The Sun isn't "getting news" either.

giyadas · 16/02/2011 22:42

That 'so' doesn't belong in the sentence. Hmm

giyadas · 16/02/2011 22:43

Grin That's a good point, but small steps..

huddspur · 16/02/2011 22:46

I'm very surprised that people wish to censor the media in this way. The proposal appears to suggest that the Government should legislate to tell newspapers what pictures they can publish despite those pictures having the consent of all those involved in them.

LadyOfTheManor · 16/02/2011 22:48

The media is already heavily censored...you do realise that don't you?

ifancyashandy · 16/02/2011 22:49

How so LadyoftheManor?

huddspur · 16/02/2011 22:50

I know there are certain censorships but most of those surround privacy/libel which Page 3 certainly isn't.

giyadas · 16/02/2011 22:50

There's plenty of places you can ogle tits if that's what you want. Why have it in the newspapers where people who don't choose to ogle still have to put up with it?
I'm sure you'd have something to say if it was pictures of submissive blokes in the papers, don't pretend you wouldn't.

huddspur · 16/02/2011 22:53

I wouldn't have any problem with pictures of men in newspapers

muminthemiddle · 16/02/2011 22:58

YANBU

What is the point of page 3???

I never buy the pile of crap that is the Sun or any other comic which incidentally has a reading age of a 5 year old.

As another poster said tits are not news, are they?

btw why do people buy crap such as celebrity mags? who cares how much any celebrity weighs ffs?

I also think the point which several posters have made about page 3 models being stupid proves another point. Why do you assume that a young slim, big breasted woman is thick, oh because you have been drip-fed that steriotype by newspapers such as the Sun for all your life. This therefore reinforces the point that page 3 is in fact very demeaning to women.

LadyOfTheManor · 16/02/2011 23:06

How so? Looked at the war effort recently have you?

SarfEasticated · 16/02/2011 23:06

My uncle used to work for the sun in the 70's and my rather straightlaced grandmother would always buy the sun to keep him in work Grin
Even when I was little I couldn't understand why a woman was in the newspaper with no clothes on. It's just not relevant. And that the image of this half naked young woman is treated so carelessly ? tomorrow's chip paper ? not very respectful.
As for the other poster who said it was no different from her child seeing her topless, I think it's all about context. I'm assuming she she sees you topless at home, rather than sitting on the bus with lots of strangers looking at you?

SarfEasticated · 16/02/2011 23:10

unrulysun you have my vote for quote of the week!

I think I missed the image of la Pankhurst chaining herself to railings for the right to get her thruppennies out in a low-literacy daily. Could someone provide a link?

Grin
carriedababi · 16/02/2011 23:28

yanbu.

i think it horrible

JessinAvalon · 16/02/2011 23:34

My favourite quote of the day goes to Giyadas for:

"I'm going to go out on a limb here and claim that if feminism hadn't existed, we could probably have relied on men to fight for our right to bare our tits in a national newspaper."

Love it!

In all fairness they should have near nekkid men for the ladies Grin

GreenEyesandHam · 16/02/2011 23:52

Page three is tacky, offensive and archaic.I can't believe it still exists tbh, it should have been left rotting in the 80's along with Jim Davidson and Roy Chubby Brown.

I hate it in the canteen at work, if someone has left one on the table and one of my colleagues will idly started turning the pages and whoomph! Lindsay (19) from Scunthorpe.

In that moment, I feel reduced to a pair of tits

ifancyashandy · 17/02/2011 00:12

It wasn't an accusation or disagreement Lady, it was a question.

theuglytruth · 17/02/2011 01:42

Let's get this straight, the sun is a very popular if not the most popular paper in the UK today. Notice I didn't call it a newspaper. It's content hasn't changed over the years to any great degree and it offers a not too serious view of the world written in a down to earth way. OK a teenager showing off her young fit body won't be to everyones liking, especially anyone who confesses to reading a newspaper as dull as the Guardian. My point - if you don't like it then don't buy it.
